Use these six checks to confirm that the car and handover terms match the offer you booked. Any difference in price, paperwork, condition, fuel or mileage should be corrected and recorded before you leave.
Walk around the parked car in good light. Photograph every side, the bumpers, mirrors, glazing, wheels and interior, then compare existing marks with the handover sheet. If a scratch or dent is absent, ask for it to be added and keep the amended record before setting off.

Compare the hire agreement with the booking confirmation. The lead driver, dates, car or category, collection and return points and payment amounts should match. Check the security deposit, mileage allowance, fuel terms and late-return rule separately. If a spoken arrangement differs, request an amended agreement or written confirmation before taking the keys.

Read the cover summary for the excess, theft protection and exclusions. Look specifically for glass, tyres, the underside, roof, interior and keys. For an optional policy or service, confirm who supplies it, its full price, what it covers and where a claim is made. Add it only when those details are clear in writing.

Take one clear photograph of the fuel gauge and another of the odometer at collection. Match both readings to the handover sheet and the fuel terms in the offer. Request a correction if they differ. Also confirm whether mileage is unlimited or whether a stated allowance and excess-mile charge apply.

Before leaving the collection point, set the seat and mirrors and check the lights, indicators, wipers, air conditioning and dashboard warnings. Over the first short distance, note the braking, steering and any unusual sound. Report a problem immediately and ask for it to be recorded or for the car to be changed.

Arrive at the return point by the time in your confirmation and bring the car back with the agreed fuel level. Before handing over the keys, photograph the car, odometer and fuel gauge. Complete the inspection with the representative and retain a signed return record together with details of any charge.
