Accommodation in Montenegro

Where to stay in Montenegro

In Montenegro, you can stay within Kotor's walls, spend your holiday at a beach hotel or have your own kitchen at the foot of Durmitor. The same word, apartment, can mean two separate bedrooms, one bedroom with a living area or a hotel unit without a kitchen. Your choice of location and accommodation layout therefore go together. For a stay among squares and restaurants, an address within the town matters, while a hotel outside town calls for a different plan for arriving and going out in the evening.

On the coast, first consider the location in relation to the beach and old town, and inland, the location in relation to the town or mountain, before choosing the right room or apartment.

Choosing a base for your stay

The selection covers bases in the Bay of Kotor, on the open coast, in Podgorica and at the foot of Durmitor. It compares the immediate surroundings of each property and the conditions that affect daily life during a stay in these places.

BaseWhat the stay offersLimitation to consider
Kotor, Old TownStay among squares and restaurants, with a choice of a hotel room or hostel.Staying within the walls means choosing an old-town setting rather than a hotel with a beach directly in front. A location on a square may mean evening music.
Tivat, town waterfrontHotel Palma combines a town address with a hotel beach right beside the building.A stay by the sea does not mean that every room has a sea view.
PetrovacA hotel holiday within the town, with a larger family apartment available at the Vile Oliva complex. Two bedrooms in a hotel apartment do not mean it has its own kitchen.
Ulcinj, Velika PlazaA resort beside a sandy beach, where you can divide your time between the pools and the sea.Azul is on Velika Plaza, outside Ulcinj's old town. Plan transport for an evening trip into town.
Podgorica, TolosiAn apartment hotel with an equipped kitchen for a longer city stay.Perla Residence is not on the central city square. Choose the location according to the places you need to visit.
Zabljak and BorjeA mountain stay with a choice of a hotel on the road to Black Lake or an apartment with a kitchen in Borje.SOA and Polar Star are in different parts of the Zabljak area. Borje requires a separate plan for transport into town.

Accommodation by area and type of stay

In the Bay of Kotor, the location in relation to the old town and town beach is decisive. On the open coast, separate bedrooms and pool access can shape a family's choice, while in Podgorica and at the foot of Durmitor, a kitchen gives you more independence during your stay.

The Bay of Kotor for town life and the sea

Kotor and Tivat

Kotor suits guests who want to step out of their accommodation into the old town. Cattaro and Old Town Hostel offer that location, with different levels of privacy and shared facilities. In Tivat, Palma offers a different daily routine, with a hotel beach on the town waterfront. These addresses let you explore the immediate surroundings on foot.

Historic Boutique Hotel Cattaro

A hotel stay on Kotor's main square

Best forGuests who want a private room within the Old Town

Cattaro suits guests who care more about staying among stone squares than having a beach in front of the hotel. The 20 m² Standard room accommodates up to three adults and overlooks the main square. That location brings town life close to the room, an advantage for going out in the evening.

Location
Stari grad 432, Kotor
Unit

Good to know

Guests have mentioned evening music on the square in published accounts of their stays. If uninterrupted sleep is essential, treat that location as a limitation when choosing.

Old Town Hostel Kotor

A dormitory or private room in the Old Town

Best forGuests who are comfortable with shared hostel facilities

Old Town Hostel offers a dormitory bed or private room within Kotor's walls. The Deluxe Double Private Room accommodates two people and has a shared bathroom and kitchen. The eight-bed dormitories have a bathroom inside the room, shared by its guests. A private room therefore gives you a sleeping space of your own while other facilities remain shared.

Hotel Palma

A town address with a hotel beach

Best forGuests who want the sea beside their hotel in Tivat

Palma suits a summer stay that combines swimming with walks along Tivat's town waterfront. The hotel beach is directly in front of the building, so this kind of day does not require a separate trip to another beach.

If a sea view matters to you, choose a room category that explicitly includes one.

02

The open coast for a family hotel holiday

Petrovac and Velika Plaza

Petrovac suits guests who want a hotel complex within a seaside town, and Vile Oliva also offers an apartment with two bedrooms. Azul near Ulcinj makes sense when you plan to spend most of your time at the resort, pools and Velika Plaza. Its location does not offer the same evening access to the old town as accommodation in town. The difference between these two options is therefore about more than room size. It also affects where you will spend time outside your room.

Vile Oliva

Two bedrooms in a Petrovac complex

Best forA family that needs separate sleeping spaces

Vile Oliva offers a 65 m² Superior apartment with two bedrooms, two double beds and one single bed. Parents and children can use separate rooms instead of the whole family sharing one sleeping space. The hotel complex with pools is in Petrovac.

Location
Ulica 8 br. 11, Petrovac
Unit

Good to know

The two bedrooms have double beds. If every adult in your group needs a separate bed, check whether two double beds and one single bed suit your party.

Azul Beach Resort Montenegro by Karisma

A stay by the pools and Velika Plaza

Best forA family seeking a resort outside the old town

Azul Beach Resort Montenegro by Karisma makes sense when you want to spend most of your holiday within the complex and on Velika Plaza. The 38 m² Premium Two Bedroom Swim Up category has a double bed and two single beds, a partition between the sleeping areas and an exit leading towards the pool.

Location

Unit

Good to know

Swim Up means pool access from this category, not a private pool. A partition between the spaces is not the same as two fully separate bedrooms.

03

Podgorica for a longer stay with a kitchen

Tolosi

Podgorica serves here as a city base for work, visits and commitments in the capital. Perla Residence in Tolosi offers hotel services with an apartment layout and a kitchen, making it suitable for guests who do not want to eat every meal at a restaurant. Assess its location away from the central square against the places you will visit each day.

Best forA longer city stay with your own meal preparation

Perla Residence in Tolosi combines a hotel stay with an apartment layout. The 40 m² Superior one-bedroom apartment has a separate bedroom and a kitchen with a hob, oven, fridge and dishwasher. That equipment makes it worth considering for a longer stay when you want to prepare some of your own meals.

04

Durmitor from Zabljak or Borje

Zabljak and nearby Borje

For a stay at the foot of Durmitor, distinguish between a hotel on Zabljak's road to Black Lake and accommodation in Borje, outside the town centre. SOA has a hotel apartment with two separate bedrooms and two bathrooms. Polar Star offers cooking facilities in the specific apartment category described. If you arrive without a car, a location in Borje requires transport arranged in advance for trips into town.

Hotel SOA

Best forA family or travel companions who need separate spaces

Hotel SOA is on the road from Zabljak towards Black Lake. The 54 m² two-bedroom apartment has two bedrooms, two bathrooms and a small living area. That layout is the reason to choose it, especially when the group does not want to share a single bathroom.

Hotel Polar Star

An apartment kitchen outside Zabljak's town centre

Best forGuests who have transport arranged and want to cook

Polar Star is in Borje, so choose it as accommodation in the Zabljak area rather than an address within the town itself. Its Suite, also described as a classic apartment, covers 50 m² and has a separate bedroom and a living area. The kitchen has a dining area, oven, fridge and dishwasher, so you can prepare your own meals in the apartment.

When several adults travel together

The total number of beds does not tell you how much privacy you will have. For a shared stay, compare how the sleeping areas are separated, the bathrooms and the facilities you share with other guests.

Two families or two couples

Two bedrooms at Vile Oliva and two bathrooms in the SOA apartment address different needs within the same group. Azul's specified Swim Up category has a partition and a published capacity that includes children, so the name Two Bedroom is not enough reason for four adults to choose it.

A shared holiday with different daily routines

A separate bedroom and kitchen at Perla Residence or Polar Star give you space for a meal while another member of the group uses the bedroom. In a private room at Old Town Hostel, the sleeping space is your own, but you share the bathroom and kitchen with other guests. Consider that distinction if independence matters more to you than the town address alone.

Where to look for more accommodation

For places or types of stay beyond this selection, you can widen your search through different channels. The property and the offer you choose determine the final terms.

Odmor.me

A local starting point for finding accommodation in Montenegro. Use the contact details and terms in the individual listing to make arrangements with the host.

Booking.com

Search for hotels and other properties by destination, dates and number of guests. Useful for comparing available room categories and the terms of each offer.

Airbnb

Search for entire homes, private rooms and other types of accommodation. Read your chosen listing for the layout, shared facilities and total cost.

Common questions before arriving at your accommodation

Who registers my stay in a private apartment?

The accommodation provider, including the host of a private apartment, submits registration for a foreign guest staying with them. Agree with your host on the information you need to supply and ask for confirmation that registration has been completed. If your host does not handle registration, contact the local tourist organisation or police in the place where you are staying. National guidance for registering independently gives a deadline of 24 hours after arriving in the place where you will stay. A confirmed booking through a platform does not in itself confirm that this process is complete.

Why is tourist tax mentioned separately from the accommodation price?

Tourist tax appears separately on the bill, but that alone does not mean you need to pay it a second time. Check your booking confirmation to see whether the tax has already been collected or is payable later to the property under the booking terms. The municipality sets the amount, so a single rate should not be applied to all of Montenegro. If the host's calculation differs from your confirmation, ask for an itemised breakdown before making an additional payment.

Does entering my card details when booking mean my stay is already paid for?

Not necessarily. The card may serve as a guarantee, and funds may only be held temporarily. The offer's terms determine when payment is actually taken. In your booking confirmation, distinguish between the amount already charged and the amount still due, and check whom you need to pay. If the confirmation specifies payment at the property, agree on the payment method with the property before arrival.

The town and city guides offer a wider local choice of accommodation. The country transport guides help when your chosen address requires a specific arrival plan.

Plan how to reach your chosen accommodation

If you choose Borje or plan to move between areas during your stay, compare car hire with transport you have arranged for those addresses. The Montenegro vehicle selection can help with that choice, and the country guide can help with further planning.
