Summer traffic on the coast and bends on mountain roads can lengthen a journey. Two places close together on the map do not always make a short day trip.
The coast and the northern mountains differ in climate and roads, which also changes how you explore them.

Questions and answers
A short stay by the sea and a trip to the northern mountains need different amounts of travel and sightseeing time.
Your departure airport also matters when choosing where to spend the final night. Summer traffic or a border crossing can considerably lengthen the drive to the terminal.
For three days, it makes sense to focus on one region. Seven to ten days allow a longer journey, but the number of overnight bases depends on the route rather than the length of the trip alone.
A car is often unnecessary for a stay in one town. Buses connect larger places, but remote beaches and mountain trailheads have fewer links. That part of the trip may require a hire car, transfer or organised excursion.
Tivat is closer to the Bay of Kotor, while Podgorica is closer to the capital and Lake Skadar. A flight to Dubrovnik or Tirana also involves a border crossing. The total journey to your first accommodation matters as well as the airfare.
Summer queues slow coastal traffic, while bends and weather can make a short mountain section take longer than expected. Check current road conditions before using winter routes or high mountain roads.
Accommodation by the bay suits exploring the Bay of Kotor, while Zabljak makes sense for several days on Durmitor. A coastal town is not an equally practical base for both areas. In a pedestrian old town, check luggage access and parking separately.
June and September often suit combining swimming with town visits, with fewer crowds than July and August. Snow can remain high in the mountains even when the coast is warm. Hiking dates therefore depend on the particular trail and current conditions.
