Everyday life in Herceg Novi
In Herceg Novi, meeting friends can start with a walk through the Old Town and continue over coffee on the waterfront. People also live and work along the waterfront, so deliveries and other daily tasks take place alongside people out walking.

During a visit to Herceg Novi, you may notice people using the same stretch of waterfront for different reasons. For some it is a place for a morning break, for others a walk with friends, while workers and residents need to get there for everyday tasks. Special vehicle access rules still allow deliveries and residents to reach their properties.
If you are staying in an apartment, you can also buy groceries outside the Old Town, but regular shops are closed on Sundays. Some hospitality businesses prepare their summer team during the winter, while some municipal work takes place at night in summer because of the heat and traffic.
01Coffee and socialising
Coffee and socialising
Coffee in Herceg Novi can be part of spending time with friends in town, with a walk before or after sitting down at a cafe. The Old Town and waterfront make it possible to continue the get-together outside. Local experiences also include a quiet morning coffee before the summer crowds, as a break without meeting up with a group.
One group of young locals walks down through the Old Town to Skver and continues spending time together over coffee there. Our Where to eat in Herceg Novi guide covers places for coffee and meals separately.
02Shopping
Shopping
For everyday groceries in Herceg Novi, you do not have to rely on a single market or the Old Town. There are food shops in Topla, Igalo, and Meljine, so you can look for supplies in the part of town where you are staying. You can also buy clothing, shoes, and household goods in town. Some market traders set out their goods on particular days of the week, so the stalls do not have the same selection every time you visit.
At the Igalo market, some stallholders usually set out their goods on Wednesdays or Saturdays. Sunday also matters for everyday shopping, since regular shops are closed. The legal exceptions are explained in the supplementary section at the end of the article.
03Life in the city
Life in the city
Herceg Novi's waterfront is both a place to walk and an area where people live and work. Businesses need deliveries, and residents need to reach their properties even when access is restricted for other vehicles. As you walk, you may encounter deliveries or vehicles with access permits.
Access to Setaliste Pet Danica is controlled by retractable bollards. With permits for residents and deliveries, these daily tasks can continue while people use the waterfront on foot. This access does not mean the promenade is open to unrestricted car traffic. Our practical guide to Herceg Novi covers arriving in town and getting around separately.
04Recreation
Recreation
A walk by the sea can be part of a daily break from the summer crowds in Herceg Novi. For longer walks, a connected stretch of waterfront links Igalo and Meljine, while parks near the shore offer places to pause.
For one local resident, walking a dog in the park below Tito's villa in Igalo is part of a routine. The old trees offer shade where you can pause on a summer day.
05Going out and nightlife
Going out and nightlife
An evening out in Herceg Novi can mean a conversation over a drink or socialising with music. There are bars and other venues in both the Old Town and along the waterfront, so nightlife is not limited to a single club. Live music and public events add to the choices in summer.
In summer, one group of young friends continues hanging out on the pier near Skver, with conversation and a guitar. This is an informal gathering among friends. If you want to attend a public event, you can find dates in the Herceg Novi events calendar.
06Work and business
Work and business
Some hospitality businesses in Herceg Novi rely on a permanent team joined by seasonal workers ahead of summer. Some of these workers return to the same employer, while certain venues had already hired local people during the winter. Preparing the team therefore starts before summer visitors arrive, and for some workers a seasonal job means returning to a familiar workplace.
Outdoor work is also adjusted to the heat. During the summer, municipal crews started work early and painted road markings at night, when there were fewer vehicles.
07Digital nomads
Digital nomads
During earlier stays in Herceg Novi, foreign professionals met other users while working in a shared space. They continued socialising over shared lunches, so their stays included time together beyond work itself.
Kolektiv Novi in the Old Town still offers space for temporary work. One woman who previously used the space met other people while working in the shared area and a smaller room. That earlier social experience does not promise an organised programme today: when booking a place to work, distinguish the workspace offered from any separately announced group activity.
What changes on Sundays
If you cook your own meals during your stay in Herceg Novi, do your regular grocery shopping for Sunday in advance. The current law prohibits regular retail trade on Sundays and on legally designated holidays.
The legal exceptions include markets, pharmacies, shops specialising in baked goods, and petrol stations with their associated facilities. An exemption does not mean the Herceg Novi market is actually open on Sunday, so check its hours separately before going.
