Staying and getting around

Practical information for Herceg Novi

A seaside stay in Herceg Novi can be combined with trips around the Bay of Kotor. The Pet Danica promenade provides a walking route along the coast, while visits to Orjen and other towns around the bay require different transport arrangements. Preparing for arrival and day-to-day life in the city also involves local services, from mobile connectivity to payments and buying medication.

Pet Danica is a pedestrian route along the coast. Blue Line and taxis are available for local trips, while a car is more useful when visiting Orjen or other places around the bay.

Useful shortcuts

Local transport and getting around

The Pet Danica promenade allows you to walk along the coast. Local journeys use streets outside this pedestrian area, with buses and taxis as alternatives to a car. Choosing transport for your stay in the city is therefore separate from choosing it for trips around the bay.

Public transport

Blue Line provides local bus services in Herceg Novi, offering a way to travel beyond the pedestrian promenade. Journeys within the city use this local network, while travel to other cities uses intercity departures from the bus station.

Taxis and on-demand transport

A taxi provides a direct local ride to your accommodation address or another destination outside the pedestrian promenade. Maestro also offers airport transfers, so you can use the same contact for getting to the city and for local rides during your stay.

Car hire

Your hire car can be delivered to a city address of your choice. In the centre, collection is arranged near Nikole Djurkovica Square, outside its pedestrian area.

Enter the address, date and time in the search. Any delivery charge and other conditions are shown with the offer. Collection from an office is available with offers that support this option.

Mobile internet and communication

You can buy MTEL tourist internet at a shop in Herceg Novi or online as an eSIM. The choice depends on your phone's eSIM support and how you want to purchase it. Calls and regional roaming have separate conditions from the domestic data allowance.

SIM cards and where to buy them

The MTEL store in Herceg Novi is at 92 Njegoseva Street. A physical tourist SIM card is also an option for a phone that does not support eSIM.

eSIM and activation

An MTEL eSIM allows you to buy mobile internet online without collecting a physical card. Your phone must support eSIM, and the purchase includes identity verification. The activation QR code is sent by email.

Calls and roaming

The internet included in an MTEL tourist package is separate from credit for ordinary calls and SMS. These packages start with €0 credit for those services, so a large data allowance does not automatically cover their cost.

Domestic and regional data allowances are also separate. Mtel turist 15 includes 500 GB in Montenegro and 9.92 GB for roaming in the specified Western Balkan countries.

Stations and onward travel

Stations and departure points

The main Herceg Novi bus station serves intercity arrivals and onward bus journeys.

Connections to other destinations

The Lepetane-Kamenari ferry lets you cross the strait towards the Tivat side of the bay instead of driving around it through Kotor. Travelling from Herceg Novi, you reach the ferry at Kamenari, with Lepetane on the opposite shore.

Timetables and tickets

BusTicket4.me displays the intercity departures offered for your chosen date and destination. Where an online ticket is available for a departure, it can be bought through the portal.

Money and payments

Currency and payment methods

Payments in Herceg Novi are in euros, as in the rest of Montenegro. Cards are widely accepted in hotels, restaurants, bars, shops, and petrol stations.

ATMs and currency exchange

For banknotes, the relevant rate is the cash exchange rate, which NLB publishes separately from the rate for account-based foreign exchange. Routine cash exchange takes place on weekdays during branch opening hours, so this matters if you arrive in Herceg Novi with foreign cash at the weekend.

Healthcare services

Pharmacies

For medication later in the day, Topla pharmacy is available at the health centre, at 1 Nikole Ljubebratica Street. Its regular opening hours are 7:00 to 20:00 on weekdays and Saturdays, extended to 21:00 under the summer schedule.

On Sundays, Topla opens from 8:00 to 14:00 under both the regular and summer schedules.

Driving in the city

When a car is useful

A car is most useful when travelling from Herceg Novi towards Orjen or visiting other places around the Bay of Kotor, such as Perast and Kotor. Such a day involves journeys outside the city, while walking is already part of exploring the area around the Pet Danica promenade. It therefore makes more sense to plan car hire around those journeys than to assume you need a car every day by the coast.

Traffic and access to the city

Different parking destinations serve the Old Town and Skver. The Opstina Garage is on Trg Marsala Tita, while Skver parking is on Partizanski put, beside the coastal part of the city.

Questions about staying in Herceg Novi

Is showing a BusTicket4.me ticket on my phone sufficient?

BusTicket4.me requires a printed copy of its tickets when you board the bus. Some operators allow an exception, but a PDF on your phone is not sufficient for every departure booked through this portal.

Who registers a foreign visitor's stay in Herceg Novi?

When you use a hotel or another accommodation provider, the provider registers your stay. If you are visiting friends as a tourist and are not using an accommodation provider, you register the stay yourself through the local tourism organisation or the relevant authority.

Can I pay for on-street parking by SMS from a foreign phone number?

SMS payment for on-street parking in Herceg Novi works only with numbers from Montenegrin mobile operators. With a foreign number, you can pay using a digital parking ticket at a marked sales outlet. The employee activates the ticket for your vehicle registration number, zone and duration, and you receive a slip and receipt.
