Useful shortcuts

Local transport and getting around

Topolica, the city waterfront, and the marina can be explored on a walk by the sea. Stari Bar is a few kilometres inland, outside this coastal area. Local buses and taxis connect these parts of the city, while renting a car also makes trips beyond Bar possible.

Public transport

Local buses connect the centre with Susanj, Sutomore, and Stari Bar. Susanj and Sutomore lie along the coastal route north of the centre, while the bus to Stari Bar heads inland to the historic quarter, about four kilometres from the coast.

Taxis and on-demand transport

For a direct ride to accommodation in Susanj or Stari Bar, the Bar services Star taxi and Euro taxi can be booked by phone.

Car hire

A hire car can be delivered to a city address you choose in Bar.

The offer sets out the delivery conditions and any fee for your selected address and time. Collection from a branch is available with offers that support this option.

Mobile internet and communication

An MTEL tourist plan lets you arrange mobile internet before arrival through an eSIM. Data use in Montenegro, regular calls, and regional roaming have separate conditions.

eSIM and activation

An MTEL eSIM lets you buy mobile internet online without collecting a physical SIM card. Your phone must support eSIM, and the purchase includes an identity check. The activation QR code arrives by email.

Calls and roaming

The data allowance in an MTEL tourist plan does not include credit for regular calls and SMS. These plans have €0 in starting credit for those services, so a large data allowance does not automatically cover their cost.

Domestic and regional data allowances are also separate. Mtel turist 15 includes 500 GB in Montenegro and 9.92 GB of roaming data in the listed Western Balkan countries.

Stations and onward travel

Stations and departure points

The bus and train stations are next to each other in southern Bar, separate from the marina and the main waterfront promenade.

Connections to other destinations

Intercity buses provide onward connections to other places on the coast, while the rail route heads toward Podgorica and continues north.

Timetables and tickets

BusTicket4.me displays the offered intercity departures for your selected date and destination. Tickets can be purchased on the platform for departures with online booking available. Train timetables are published by Railway Transport of Montenegro.

Money and payments

Currency and payment methods

Payments in Bar are made in euros, as elsewhere in Montenegro. Cards are widely accepted in hotels, restaurants, bars, shops and petrol stations.

ATMs and currency exchange

Cash exchange rates apply when exchanging banknotes in another currency. NLB publishes these separately from the rates used for noncash exchange. Regular cash exchange at NLB takes place on weekdays during branch opening hours.

Healthcare services

Pharmacies

Montefarm’s Topolica pharmacy at the health centre on Jovana Tomasevica Street is also open at weekends. It is open from 7:00 to 20:00 on weekdays, from 7:00 to 17:00 on Saturdays, and from 8:00 to 12:00 on Sundays. Under its summer schedule, weekday hours extend to 21:00, while weekend hours remain the same.

Driving in the city

When a car is useful

A car is useful if your stay in Bar includes trips to Mirovica or the Bar side of Lake Skadar, such as Virpazar. These regional destinations are outside the coastal area covered on foot around Topolica, the waterfront and the marina.

Traffic and access to the city

Drivers arriving in Stari Bar use parking areas by the historic quarter and the town gates, separate from the car parks along the city waterfront. The Bar parking guide distinguishes these locations from options in the centre and at Zukotrlica.

Questions about staying in Bar

Is showing a BusTicket4.me ticket on my phone enough?

BusTicket4.me requires a printed copy of its tickets when boarding the bus. Some carriers allow an exception, but a PDF on your phone is not sufficient for every departure booked through this platform.

Who registers a foreign guest’s stay in Bar?

When you stay at a hotel or use another accommodation provider, the provider registers your stay. If you are visiting as a tourist and staying with friends without using an accommodation provider, you register your stay yourself through the local tourism organisation or the relevant authority.

Does an intercity bus ticket include the cost of taking a suitcase?

There may be an additional charge for carrying a suitcase, depending on the operator, so buying a passenger ticket does not confirm that this cost is included.
