01Coffee and socialising
Coffee and socialising
People in Bar drink their morning coffee at home and in cafes. Coffee also gives people a reason to meet: a shopping trip can lead to sitting down in a cafe and chatting with friends.
In Stari Bar, Friday is market day and a time to get together for coffee in the market quarter.
For cafes and places to eat, see our Where to eat in Bar guide.
02Shopping
Shopping
You can buy groceries for your apartment at the city's grocery stores, and Bar also has stores for clothing, footwear, and household items. Grocery stores are also found in residential neighborhoods, including Ilino.
Customers at Bar's produce market previously described different shopping habits: some came almost every day, while others visited rarely, for the groceries they needed at the time.
Do your regular shopping for Sunday in advance, with the legal exceptions explained below.
03Life in the city
Life in the city
Bar's waterfront is public space used by large numbers of residents every day. Pedestrians have priority on King Nikola Promenade. After the main summer season, bicycles are allowed again, but at walking speed.
Families also play in the park at King Nikola's Palace: one grandfather from Bar previously spent a lot of time there with his grandchildren.
Our practical guide to Bar covers getting here, transportation, and services you may need while traveling.
04Recreation
Recreation
Alongside everyday walks by the sea, people in Bar also go running and do outdoor fitness training. Some people use the city's fitness trail for these workouts.
Lighting was installed in Sumice at the initiative of trail users who wanted to train in the evenings too.
For activities and more detailed planning, see Things to do in Bar.
05Going out and nightlife
Going out and nightlife
An evening out in Bar can include both film and music. The summer program included outdoor concerts by the sea, while the House of Culture publishes a film schedule in the fall as well. Social gatherings at local venues also took the form of group games, with friends meeting repeatedly.
During a past spring pub quiz league, teams of people of different ages and occupations returned over multiple evenings. The series then ended with a final.
For the dates and locations of films and cultural events during your stay, see the Cultural Center Bar program.
06Work and business
Work and business
In Bar's seafaring families, work also means long periods away from home. Birthdays and holidays may pass without the family getting together. Seeing someone off on a ship and waiting for their return are therefore part of family life tied to this work.
Bar brought together seafarers and their families for the first Seafarers' Day celebration, held in June. Musicians from seafaring families also took part.
07Digital nomads
Digital nomads
People also work remotely in Bar during temporary stays in apartments. To work outside your accommodations, there is a shared workspace in the city center with separate booths for business calls. Cultural and social gatherings developed alongside this work in the city, especially among Russian-speaking newcomers.
Along with workspaces, Focuss.space previously brought people together for group games and concerts. Today it offers both coworking and a room for events. Opportunities to socialize depend on the current program.
Our Where to stay in Bar guide covers types of places to stay and areas of the city.
What changes on Sundays
If you are staying in an apartment in Bar, do your regular shopping for Sunday ahead of time. Current law prohibits regular retail sales on Sundays and holidays specified by law.
Exceptions include markets, pharmacies, stores specializing in baked goods, and gas stations with attached facilities. A legal exemption does not mean every such place is open, and it does not confirm the opening hours of Bar's market.
