Best time to visit Montenegro

Consider June for beaches and town visits, or September for a trip combining the coast with walking in Durmitor.

When your dates are already fixed

If your dates fall in May or October, make town visits and Lake Skadar the focus of the trip. Keep swimming and a climb in Durmitor as options if conditions allow.

When to go, by area and main activity

Choose a row for your main activity, then select the period to read more. Months overlap because the same dates do not suit the coast and the mountains equally well.

PeriodAreaWhy choose this periodWhat to consider
March-MayThe coast, Podgorica and Lake SkadarOutdoor sightseeing before the summer heat. May is a warmer choice than March or April. In early spring, allow for changing your outing if it rains.
JuneThe coastA summer stay by the sea before the busiest part of the season, with time for town visits. The water can be cool. A warm afternoon does not guarantee a comfortable swim.
July-AugustThe coastSummer warmth suits a seaside vacation. Plan longer sightseeing outings for the morning or late afternoon.Expect summer heat and high demand on the coast.
July-SeptemberDurmitorA summer walking vacation around Zabljak and the lakes. July and August are Durmitor's driest months. For high trails, check for lingering snow and the forecast for your chosen hike.
SeptemberThe coast, Podgorica and Lake SkadarEarly fall brings milder conditions for sightseeing. Swimming can be an extra.Swimming depends on water temperature and beach conditions. Check whether the services you need are running for your dates.
OctoberThe coast, Podgorica and Lake SkadarFall is a season for birdwatching at the lake and for walks and town visits on the coast.Plan a trip you would enjoy even without swimming.
November-FebruaryThe coast, Podgorica and Lake SkadarThe lake is within its recommended birdwatching season. On the coast, choose a short town stay.Confirm that your chosen places are open and have a plan for rain.
January-MarchDurmitorPart of Durmitor's usual snowy period, when skiing can be the focus of your vacation.Check snow conditions and which slopes are open before traveling.
01

The coast, lake and mountains have different seasons

You can explore Kotor's squares, Perast's waterfront and Budva's walls even when you would not enjoy swimming in the sea.

Podgorica and Lake Skadar are in low-lying areas, so heading inland from the coast does not necessarily mean escaping summer heat. Consider spring or fall for exploring lakeside settlements and taking longer walks. Lakes and hiking trails are the main summer attractions in Durmitor, while winter draws visitors for snow activities.

02

Spring for old towns and Lake Skadar

March and April make sense if towns are the focus of your trip and you can move an outing to another day.

In the Bay of Kotor, this could mean a waterfront walk and a visit to Kotor, while at Lake Skadar you could stay in Virpazar or Rijeka Crnojevica. Choose a museum or gallery for a rainy day and check its opening hours. A town base is therefore more practical than accommodation chosen only for its beach when sightseeing is your main aim.

May is a good choice if you want longer walks outdoors and do not need to swim every day. At the lake, you can combine visits to lakeside settlements with a boat trip. Agree on the departure time, duration and boarding point with the operator.

03

June, July and August: when the sea comes first

June suits a trip that alternates beach time with town visits.

Consider July and August first if you want to spend most of your vacation by the sea. Warm air does not determine the water temperature at every beach. If cool water bothers you, choose June for a vacation with sightseeing, rather than for the beach alone.

In July and August, plan longer outdoor sightseeing for the morning or late afternoon, and leave the middle of the day for a rest.

04

July to September as a starting point for Durmitor

July and August are a good choice for a walking vacation in Durmitor because they are the driest part of the year there.

You can combine walks around Zabljak and the lakes with longer mountain hikes. September is also within the park's recommended visiting period, so it suits a trip that combines the north with the coast.

Keep plans more flexible in June and October, especially for a high summit: snow can linger in Durmitor's shaded hollows even in summer. A lakeside walk, a climb of Bobotov Kuk and a drive over Sedlo Pass call for different preparation. Choose a hiking route to suit your experience and the conditions on the trail, and check separately whether the road over Sedlo is passable. Confirm conditions for your chosen hike with the park or a licensed guide, and keep the day flexible so you can choose another outing if the forecast worsens.

05

September for a combined trip, October for sightseeing

September is worth considering if you want to combine the coast, towns and a few days in nature.

Swimming can still be part of the vacation, while the mountain stay falls within the recommended Durmitor period. Split your overnight stays between the coast and the north: a mountain hike should not depend on getting back to coastal accommodation the same day.

October is a better choice if you would enjoy the trip without swimming in the sea. The Bay of Kotor and lakeside settlements can be the main destinations. At Lake Skadar, fall brings a particular reason to visit: birdwatching.

06

November to March: a town stay or snow

November and December can suit a short stay on the coast for old towns, meals out and walks on dry days.

The same kind of trip is possible in January and February. Check that your chosen accommodation, restaurants and museums are open for your dates. Lake Skadar remains an option for birdwatchers in winter. For a boat trip, ask the operator about availability for your dates and agree on a departure time.

For skiing, consider January, February or March. These months are part of the usual snowy period in Durmitor, but for Zabljak or Kolasin, open slopes and working lifts at your chosen resort are what matter. Until the resort confirms its opening, choose a November or December stay you would enjoy even without skiing.

07

How to compare prices for a coastal vacation

For a vacation by the sea, compare prices for the same accommodation in June or September with offers for July and August.

Use the same number of nights, include all mandatory charges and keep cancellation terms the same. If June costs less, the saving is an advantage only if you would enjoy a vacation with town visits even when the water is not pleasant for swimming.

Can I combine the beach and a climb of Bobotov Kuk in May?

Do not count on both being certain parts of a May vacation. If swimming and Bobotov Kuk are equally important to you, consider July or August, when the summer coastal season overlaps with Durmitor's recommended visiting period.

Can you still swim in October?

You may be able to, but October is not a reliable choice for a vacation that depends on swimming every day. Freshwater flowing into the Bay of Kotor affects sea temperature, and the water is cooler toward the end of the season.

Is everything on the coast closed in November?

Not everything closes. For example, Taraca restaurant in Kotor says it opens year-round, with a short break around Orthodox Christmas. Its schedule does not tell you whether other places along the coast are open.
