Seasons in Montenegro
Lake Skadar expands and contracts, herding families spend part of the year in the mountains, and arriving birds change life by the water. Herceg Novi marks the winter flowering of mimosa with parades and other programmes devoted to the flower.

Four seasonal changes
- The whole of Lake Skadar
- Around 370 km² in summer and 540 km² in winter
- Katun
- A temporary settlement for summer grazing
- Birds
- Autumn migration and wintering
- Herceg Novi
- The Mimosa Festival in February
Different calendars in the same landscape
In summer, a family moves with its livestock from the village to a mountain pasture. In autumn, some livestock farmers return, while others remain near lower meadows.
A winter trip to Herceg Novi may be planned around the Mimosa Festival, while a stay in a katun, a seasonal mountain herding settlement, also depends on whether the particular household welcomes guests at that time. The flowering season, the time livestock farmers spend there and the season for receiving guests need not have the same duration: each calendar describes a different aspect of life in a place.
01Lake Skadar changes its shoreline and plant cover
Lake Skadar changes its shoreline and plant cover
At Lake Skadar, the season also changes the area covered by water. National Parks of Montenegro gives an area ranging from around 370 square kilometres in summer to 540 in winter, depending on the water level. These figures refer to the whole lake, shared by Montenegro and Albania. The Montenegrin part of the lake has national park status, so the area of the whole lake should not be confused with the area of the park. The Morača and its tributaries supply most of the lake's water, which flows out through the Bojana.
The National Parks' account of plant life highlights the shallow northern shore, which is subject to flooding and has wetland vegetation, willow groves and meadows. During summer, white and yellow water lilies and kasoranja, an aquatic plant with leaves floating on the surface, cover large areas of water. Below the surface, there are also meadows of submerged plants where aquatic animals find food and shelter.
02A katun is a settlement used seasonally
A katun is a settlement used seasonally
The Katun Roads project, run by the Regional Development Agency for Bjelasica, Komovi and Prokletije, describes katuns as temporary mountain settlements used by herders. Families move there with their livestock for summer grazing, using the huts and pens during their stay on the pasture.
There is no single return date for every household. The account of the Granični visovi Katun Road distinguishes between livestock farmers who leave the katun as early as the beginning of September and those who move down to lower meadows, extending their stay until the snow comes. The same source records rare cases of spending the winter in a katun, when it suits a livestock farmer better to feed the animals there than to transport hay to the village. Leaving or staying therefore also depends on the location of pastures, meadows and stored fodder, as well as the season.
03Autumn arrivals and wintering birds
Autumn arrivals and wintering birds
The National Tourism Organisation highlights autumn and winter as the time when large flocks of migratory birds fly over Lake Skadar. The lake is also a wintering site: National Parks lists the coot and black-necked grebe among the waterbirds that spend the winter here.
The draft management plan for Lake Skadar National Park describes three roles the area plays for birds: a stopover during migration, a wintering site and a breeding site. Birds stopping here during migration rest and feed before continuing their journey.
04Mimosa gives Herceg Novi a reason to gather in winter
Mimosa gives Herceg Novi a reason to gather in winter
According to the Herceg Novi Tourism Organisation, mimosa flowers in winter and gives its name to the Mimosa Festival, an event devoted to the flower. The flowering season thus finds a place in the public calendar: carnival parades, masked balls, a flower exhibition and performances by brass bands and majorettes bring people together in the town in winter.
Parades and promenade performances take place outdoors. The programme also includes exhibitions, literary events and stage performances. The Tourism Organisation also describes the festival as a welcome to spring and names JUK Herceg fest as the organiser.
Questions about seasonal encounters and events
What should I arrange for a boat trip if I want to watch birds?
Explain that birdwatching is your main aim and arrange a trip that keeps a distance from nesting sites. In its appeal to protect pelicans, National Parks asks visitors, tourism workers and fishers to keep away from places where pelicans raise their young. A visit to the lake is no reason to take a boat close to the colony for a photograph.
Can I come on any day of the Mimosa Festival?
If you want to see a particular parade, masked ball or concert, choose its scheduled time. The programme published by the Herceg Novi Tourism Organisation schedules the opening, mimosa picking, international carnival and closing on different days. Being in town while the festival is running does not in itself mean that you will catch every part of the programme.
Does a rural household welcome guests all year round?
The season depends on the particular household. The Jokić family at Vujov katun on Čakor advertises stays from June to October. Those dates apply to this household, not to rural accommodation in general. For a winter stay, you need a host who welcomes guests on your dates, because the presence of a hut does not establish that guests are welcomed all year round.
