Igalo up close

Everyday life in Igalo

Alongside summer visitors, Igalo also hosts people who come for rehabilitation. Their days include scheduled therapy sessions, so time by the sea can be a break between appointments.

Get to know the place you are staying in

Igalo's waterfront has places to eat and drink and space for walking, while everyday shopping also takes place on Sava Ilica Street and towards Sutorina. You do not have to go to central Herceg Novi every time you need groceries, clothing or shoes.

If you stay outside the centre, being close to the waterfront on a map does not always mean a flat walk back to your apartment. That matters when you also use your accommodation for work: a route you take once to the beach can become a daily walk between your apartment and the waterfront.

01

Coffee and socialising

Cafes in the Herceg Novi area were places where young people gathered over drinks and talked about what was happening locally. Cafes and other venues on the Igalo waterfront promenade offer places to meet over a drink. Some operate seasonally, so the choice outside summer is not the same as in the high season.

In Igalo, some young people were especially attached to one place they went out to.

For a place to have a meal, see our guide to where to eat in Igalo.

02

Shopping

Shopping in Igalo covers everyday groceries as well as clothing, footwear and household items. There are food shops in Igalo itself and towards Sutorina, while Sava Ilica Street also has places to buy clothing and sports shoes. Shopping for your stay therefore does not depend only on market stalls or tourist venues near the beach.

Vendors at Igalo's market generally display their goods on Wednesdays or Saturdays. Plan a visit to the stalls for one of those days.

Regular shops are closed on Sundays. If you cook in your apartment, buy groceries for Sunday ahead of time, and see the section below for the exceptions.

03

Life in the city

In Igalo, time by the sea also includes the park below Titova vila, just behind the beach. Summer guests go there for shade under the trees and a break from swimming, and the park is also used for walks. The waterfront promenade connects the beaches with places to eat and drink.

One long-time resident of the Herceg Novi coast regularly walked his dog in that park.

For arrival, transport and everyday services, see the separate practical guide to Igalo.

04

Recreation

Recreation in Igalo includes playing sports together on courts and fields. Physiotherapy students have a tradition of sports gatherings where they compete and then spend time together outside class. Recreational players can also use the Sports Centre, so its courts and fields are not just for professional teams.

During one Sports Day held in May, students played team sports on the outdoor grounds at Sports Centre Igalo and continued socialising after the awards were presented.

To use the courts and fields yourself, you can arrange a time with the centre.

05

Going out and nightlife

An evening out in Igalo can mean visiting a waterfront venue or going to a public music event. Beach bars and nightlife venues are available, but many places along the waterfront operate seasonally. Winter festival concerts bring people together outdoors for a different occasion, outside the beach venues' summer season.

On one February opening night of the Mimosa Festival, a crowd gathered in the open area in front of the former Hotel Igalo for a concert and fireworks.

To plan your evening, check the current calendar of events in the Herceg Novi municipality. Check the location: events in Herceg Novi's Old Town are not in Igalo, even if they appear in the same announcement.

06

Work and business

Rehabilitation in Igalo also involves the daily work of medical and hotel staff. Some provide therapy as part of patients' programmes, while others welcome guests, look after rooms and prepare meals. In programmes that include accommodation and meals, patients' stays also rely on this hotel work.

During an earlier spring day at the Dr Simo Milosevic Institute, patients were heading to scheduled therapy sessions from the morning onwards while reception staff, housekeepers and restaurant staff were doing their jobs.

For guests undergoing rehabilitation, plans to meet people, go out or take a walk fit around the patient's programme, so visitors to Igalo are not all spending their days as they would on a typical summer holiday.

07

Digital nomads

If you work from an apartment during your stay in Igalo, you can do your regular grocery shopping in town. You can take a break from work with a walk along the waterfront. An apartment outside the centre may have an uphill approach, so the daily walk back from the sea can be different from the walk to an apartment beside the promenade.

During an earlier two-week stay while working remotely, one guest outside the centre chose to walk every day even though the approach to her apartment was uphill.

What changes on Sundays

If you cook your own meals during your stay in Igalo, shop for Sunday's groceries in advance. The law prohibits regular trade on Sundays and statutory holidays.

Legal exemptions include markets, pharmacies, shops that specialise in baked goods, and petrol stations with their accompanying facilities. An exemption does not confirm that Igalo's market is actually open on Sundays, so check its opening hours separately before you go.
