The coast by the Sutorina river mouth

About Igalo

Igalo is a settlement on the western stretch of the Herceg Novi coast, towards the mouth of the Sutorina river. Its development is linked to marine mud and Igaljka mineral water, natural resources used by the Dr Simo Milosevic Institute. The coastal promenade connects Igalo with Topla and Herceg Novi, while the former state residence Villa Galeb and educational and sports facilities stand alongside the health complex.

The coast, the Institute and Igalo today

The Dr Simo Milosevic Institute combines rehabilitation with guest accommodation. The health resort developed along a shore that provides the marine mud and underground mineral water used in its programmes.

The Institute's waterfront complex opens onto the Pet Danica Promenade, while the Igalo Sports Centre stands along the main road, opposite the Institute. Applied physiotherapy is also taught in the settlement, with the Institute serving as a teaching base. Villa Galeb preserves the rooms of Tito's former residence, where private living and official meetings took place.

Igalo on the western stretch of the Herceg Novi coast

Igalo is a settlement in the municipality of Herceg Novi, on the western stretch of its coast. The coastal area continues east through Topla and then below the Old Town. The sea is shallow near the mouth of the Sutorina river.

The Pet Danica Promenade connects the coast from Igalo to Meljine. Roads and streets branch off from it towards the interior of the settlement. Igalo shares the coastal climate of the Herceg Novi area, with warm summers and mild winters, while Mount Orjen rises inland from this part of the Bay of Kotor.

The Sutorina river mouth, marine peloid and Igaljka water

Marine peloid is mineral and organic mud that forms in Igalo Bay. Sediment carried by the Sutorina river, seawater and marine plant and animal life all contribute to its formation. The shallow depth of the sea also plays a part.

Igaljka mineral water comes from underground springs near the mouth of the Sutorina, beside the coast. The Institute uses it in its programmes. The mud forms in the sea, while the mineral water comes from underground, so these two natural resources have different origins even though they are associated with the same stretch of coast.

The Institute's development and layout

The founding of the health resort and two complexes combining accommodation, rehabilitation and other uses.

From health resort to Institute

The Dr Simo Milosevic Institute was founded in 1949 as the Spa and Climate Health Resort in Igalo. The institution used the coast's natural resources, marine peloid and mineral water.

Today, the Institute specialises in physical medicine, rehabilitation and rheumatology. Guests stay within the same institution, while their health programmes take place in its medical and therapy facilities.

The waterfront and the Institute's two phases

The Institute has two separate complexes known as Phase I and Phase II. The Phase I buildings stand beside the coast, with direct access to the Pet Danica Promenade. This complex contains accommodation and therapy facilities, so the waterfront along the promenade also forms part of the Institute.

Phase II combines accommodation buildings with a medical department and outpatient clinic. The complex also includes sports and recreation facilities, a conference hall and meeting rooms. Phase I and Phase II are the names of two complexes belonging to the same institution.

The former state residence, physiotherapy studies and the municipal sports centre.

Villa Galeb and its former role as a state residence

Villa Galeb was built in 1976 as a residence for Josip Broz Tito within the Institute complex. Alongside Igalo's health and accommodation facilities, it provided a place for the president of Yugoslavia to stay and hold official meetings.

The villa's memorial rooms include meeting rooms and the apartments of Tito and Jovanka Broz. Part of the building is used for organised visits. The preserved rooms show how private living, receptions and official work were combined within one residence.

Physiotherapy studies and sports facilities

The Applied Physiotherapy study programme of the University of Montenegro's Faculty of Medicine is taught in Igalo. The Institute serves as its teaching base, linking the education of future physiotherapists with an institution specialising in rehabilitation.

The Igalo Sports Centre stands along the main road, opposite the Institute. This municipal centre includes an indoor hall, tennis courts and other sports facilities.

Questions about Igalo

What should you check when an offer in Igalo mentions a spa or mineral water?

The Institute describes its use of local Igaljka mineral water. For another offer, the name Igalo or spa does not confirm which water a pool uses or what is included in your stay. Ask the establishment about the type of water and the facilities or services included, rather than assuming that every property uses the same local source.

Can you walk from Igalo to Herceg Novi's Old Town?

Yes, the Pet Danica Promenade connects Igalo with the coast below the Old Town. You then continue uphill from the coast to the old squares via stairways, so the entire route is not level. For other walks and outings, see things to do in Igalo.

How can you check whether you can visit Villa Galeb during your stay?

Check the official Villa Galeb page, where the Institute publishes information about organised visits and contact details for enquiries. Check the schedule for your travel dates and how to arrange a visit, especially if you are coming as a group. An older review or a statement that the villa is open to visitors does not confirm that you can enter on any day without arranging a visit.
