The climb to Sveti Ivan Fortress

Stone steps follow the city walls up the hillside above the Old Town towards Sveti Ivan Fortress. Higher up, the view opens across the town’s rooftops and harbour towards the bay. For a family visit, allow for the descent by the steps as well, with more effort involved than a walk around the town’s squares.
The official access points to the path are Parilo, behind the Collegiate Church of St Mary, and Skaljarska pjaca in the Old Town. For your visit, see Kotor City Walls tickets and seasonal opening times. More about climbing the city walls · View on map.

Frequently asked questions about a family stay in Kotor
What can we combine with a walk in the Old Town?
The Maritime Museum, Cats Museum and Kino Boka are in the Old Town. City Park is close to the walls, and Game World is in Kamelija shopping centre. The aquarium is further along the coast in Dobrota, while for the cable car you first need to get to Dub, so plan these outings around where you are staying.
What can we do with children when it rains?
Boka Aquarium and the museum collections offer indoor visits, while Game World has play equipment and arcade games. For Kino Boka, choose a screening suited to your children’s ages and the language they understand. The Cats Museum opens seasonally, so it is not a year-round option for a rainy day.
Does the programme duration include getting there from Kotor?
Montenegro Submarine’s one hour is the boat trip itself, with arrival at the departure point 30 minutes earlier. For the cable car, 11 minutes is just the journey from Dub to Kuk, one way. The Pony Art Garden visit lasts an hour and a half, excluding transport to the starting point. At Lipa Cave, 60 minutes includes the guided tour and the train from the reception car park to the entrance and back. Travel from Kotor is not included.
