An independent walk through the Old Town
Entering through Morska vrata, you reach Trg od Oruzja, then continue from this larger square into narrow stone passages. Smaller squares and streets form a compact pedestrian area where you can choose which lanes to follow and pause by facades, shop windows or views towards the hillside. This kind of walk gives you time to explore the spaces between monuments, without having to visit every church or museum.
You choose the pace and length of the walk. Entering individual buildings is a separate visit with its own conditions. When you want to learn more about a place behind its facade, the attractions guide describes its particular features and visiting options. For a break during the walk, see our selection of places to eat in Kotor. Trg od Oruzja, starting point for the independent walk on Google Maps.
Climbing the city walls to Sveti Ivan Fortress
From the streets of the Old Town, you take the stone steps that follow the walls towards Sveti Ivan Fortress. As you gain height, the view over the rooftops widens to take in the harbour and inner bay. This option involves a climb up a steep hillside and a return down the steps, so it takes more effort than walking between the town squares.
The official entrances are Parilo, behind the Church of Sveta Marija Koledjata, and Skaljarska pjaca, near Trg od Salate. A valid ticket is required, and the published entry hours in October and November are 08:00-17:00. The Kotor City Walls website also publishes the schedule for other parts of the year. The time needed for the climb and descent depends on your pace and breaks. The Kotor attractions guide explores the history of the fortifications.
