Walks, culture and activities on the water

Things to do in Tivat and the surrounding area

The walk from Pine to Porto Montenegro runs along the bay to yacht berths, while the naval collection offers a look at the equipment and work involved in operating vessels. You can also experience the area from the water by paddling among the islands, taking a boat trip with a skipper or learning to handle a powerboat. On land, a stony climb from Gornja Lastva leads to views from Vrmac, while the observation towers at Solila offer places to watch birds.

The guide was prepared through research into activities in Tivat and the surrounding area. The content was reviewed, confirmed and verified by Milovan Johnson on 8 October 2026.

You can compare eight activities in Tivat and the surrounding area here by experience, duration and how you take part. The descriptions cover independent visits, guided activities and training, with access or booking requirements. Before the first block, the overview helps you choose an activity, while the two maps show the places in town and the areas for outings outside the centre.

To learn what makes the places significant and explore them in more detail, continue to Tivat's attractions. If you are travelling with children, the separate Tivat family guide looks at choices based on their needs.

Choose an experience

Independent visits last as long as you choose, within access arrangements and opening hours. Times for booked activities refer to the programme, without travel from your accommodation. For the film, the screening's running time is given, while the paddling activity also lists time spent on the water.

City locations and separate outings

The city map connects the waterfront walk with the naval collection and Main Hall. A shared Porto Montenegro marker covers the walk and the training base area. On the map of the surrounding area, separate markers identify land visits to Solila, Gornja Lastva, Sveti Marko island on the paddling route and the boat departure area in Tivat Bay. For activities on the water, the operator provides the exact meeting or boarding point with your booking. The Gornja Lastva marker identifies the village, so you choose the start and return route of the climb based on the marked trail.

01
Waterfront walk, naval collection and cultural events

Walk from Pine to Porto Montenegro

At Pine, you can set off beside the water, pause to look across the bay and continue along the promenade towards Porto Montenegro. The walk follows the coast, changing from the open town waterfront to yacht berths. You can make it a short outing from the centre or spend longer beside the boats, taking in the views of the surrounding hills and stopping when you choose.

If you want to know how the former Arsenal waterfront has changed, the story is in Tivat's modern history. Pine, start of the waterfront walk on Google Maps. Naval Heritage Collection and the Heroj submarine

At the Naval Heritage Collection, you can examine Austro-Hungarian naval equipment and machinery, focusing your visit on the technical side of operating vessels. The collection of more than 300 objects also includes two preserved Yugoslav submarines. Heroj stands beside the collection and can be viewed from outside, while access to its interior depends on the arrangements the museum confirms for your visit date.

The collection lists opening hours from Tuesday to Saturday, 9:00 to 17:00. Alongside the permanent display, it holds themed exhibitions, so you can plan your visit around what is on show at the time. The naval collection's visitor information and contact details provide information about its programme and admission arrangements. Naval Heritage Collection and Heroj on Google Maps.

Film, theatre or concert at the Cultural Centre

The Cultural Centre's Main Hall (Velika sala) hosts film screenings, plays and concerts throughout the year, so you can choose an evening out in Tivat according to the story, music or performance in the current schedule. The summer stages have separate outdoor programmes, while each event announcement specifies the hall or stage where it takes place.

A screening of the documentary Milica u majke has been announced for 12 October 2026 at 20:30 in the Main Hall. A journalist traces an old Podgorica song (a sevdalinka) from Stara Varos to Sarajevo, exploring two contrasting stories about the woman the song is dedicated to. The listed 28 minutes is the film's running time. The hall is at 4 Luke Tomanovica Street. The film announcement applies to that date, while the Cultural Centre's schedule lets you choose another event during your stay, with its venue and admission arrangements. Birdwatching and walking on Vrmac

Birdwatching at Solila

Beside the shallow water and observation tower at Solila, you can spend time watching where birds gather and how they move between the water and shore. The reserve has paths and two observation towers, and a roadside viewpoint also overlooks part of the wetland. Binoculars help you watch the birds from a distance without approaching their habitat.

Spring and autumn bring migrating birds, winter brings birds that overwinter here, and bird numbers are lower in summer. Under the published rules of JP Morsko dobro, tourist visits are subject to the reserve manager's approval and protection of the habitat, so agree on the current visiting arrangements before you arrive. The tourist information about Solila explains seasonal differences that may affect when you choose to go birdwatching. Solila, birdwatching on land on Google Maps.

Walk from Gornja Lastva towards Sveti Vid

From Gornja Lastva and the Orasje area, you can head towards the hill of Sveti Vid. The walk changes from passing through the village to a climb, as the old, uneven road at the foot of the hill becomes a narrower, winding stone path with steps. From the plateau by the church, the view takes in Tivat Bay and Lustica, letting you see the coast and islands from above after the stony ascent.

The Vrmac map from the Tivat Tourist Organisation and the Napredak association distinguishes walking and cycling routes and instructs visitors to stay on marked trails. The time needed for this outing depends on your chosen starting point, ascent and return. The Gornja Lastva marker on the map shows the village from which you head towards Sveti Vid, while you choose where to start the trail and leave your car based on your approach. For a visit to the stone village itself, continue to the description of Gornja Lastva. Gornja Lastva, area for the climb towards Sveti Vid on Google Maps.

03
Paddling, boat trips and powerboat training

Guided paddling beside Solila and Sveti Marko

On SUP Montenegro's Solila and Sveti Marko programme, you propel your own board or kayak and follow a guide along the outer boundary of the reserve's shallow waters. The route continues towards Sveti Marko island and passes Miholjska Prevlaka, letting you experience the islands from water level. The published route is about 8 km, so this option involves a longer session of active paddling among the islands. A land visit to Solila and entry to the monastery are not listed in the programme.

Previous SUP experience is desirable but not required, and instruction and a safety briefing are scheduled before departure. The programme includes paddling equipment, a flotation aid, a dry bag and a wetsuit when needed. The operator lists 3.5 hours in total, including 3 hours on the water. The price depends on the number of participants, while transfers from Tivat or Kotor are arranged separately and may cost extra.

You agree on the exact meeting point, an available date and water conditions with the operator when booking the Solila and Sveti Marko programme. The map marks the island in the paddling area, so you reach the meeting point by following the directions provided with your booking. Sveti Marko, island in the paddling route area on Google Maps.

Boat trip from Tivat to the Blue Cave

On Sea Tours' private boat trip from Tivat to the Blue Cave, you experience the bay as a passenger while a skipper handles the boat. The trip passes Mamula island on the way to the cave, where a short swimming stop is planned, while a stop at Gospa od Skrpjela lets you spend part of the outing on land.

The published programme lasts three hours, with 15 minutes set aside for swimming in the cave. The skipper, fuel and water are included, while the island's museum ticket, a meal and transfers from outside the Tivat area are charged separately. The operator lists pick-up in Tivat Bay, with the exact berth to be agreed before departure. For the Blue Cave boat trip, request confirmation of the date, the final price for your group and conditions for entering the cave that day. The three hours do not include your journey to the agreed boarding point or your return to your accommodation. Tivat Bay, boat departure area by arrangement on Google Maps.

Powerboat training at Porto Montenegro

On the RYA Powerboat Level 1 course, you take part in preparing the boat and learn basic handling with an instructor. Practical training covers preparing the vessel and crew, approaching and leaving the shore, mooring to a buoy and using safety equipment. Procedures for a person overboard are covered in theory at this level.

Porto Montenegro Yacht Club accepts participants with no previous experience in groups of up to three. Level 1 is a one-day course, with a published schedule of 9:00 to 17:00. Training uses the base at Porto Montenegro, while the exact meeting point and available date are confirmed when you register. The Powerboat course information and registration page distinguishes the one-day Level 1 from the two-day Level 2 and more advanced programmes, so the stated duration and price apply to the introductory course. Questions about activities in Tivat

What is still available after the summer season?

The naval collection publishes weekly opening hours, and the Cultural Centre lists October screenings in its indoor hall, so there are still cultural outings in town after summer. For activities on the water, availability depends on a date confirmed by the operator. The SUP page lists May to October, with dates still to be arranged, without confirming daily or winter departures.

What happens if bad weather cancels a booked paddling trip?

For this trip, SUP Montenegro states that it will try to reschedule, with a full refund if that is not possible. This provision applies when the operator cancels because of the weather. Your own cancellation has separate terms. The rule does not automatically apply to a private boat trip or course. For those, request the weather cancellation policy with the offer before paying.

Is a private speedboat suitable for a large group?

For a large group, the offer needs to name the boat, state how many guests it can carry with the skipper aboard, and specify the boarding point. Sea Tours lists a capacity of 11 for the Marinello speedboat. When arranging the trip, request separate numbers for guests and crew, then compare that answer with the size of your group. Once the boat and number of places are agreed, you can compare the total price with offers for the same number of guests.
