From houses with gardens to residential neighborhoods
Igalo’s houses once stood beside gardens, orchards and vineyards. In an old description of Igalo, Gomila is listed among the names of cultivated plots, long before today’s apartment blocks were built.
01Igalo’s waterfront
Buildings along the waterfront vary in height and contain homes, tourist accommodation and businesses. The Dr Simo Milosevic Institute is Igalo’s rehabilitation center and has two complexes, known as Phases I and II. Residential buildings predominate beside the promenade below Phase II, as far as the Palmon Bay hotel. Businesses and hospitality venues occupy more space closer to the start of Njegoseva Street.
In the older part of the waterfront, stone houses have simple rectangular forms and courtyards, and stand in small groups. Most of these historic houses date from Venetian rule. Under Austro-Hungarian rule, houses were extended outward and upward. On some facades, newer cladding now conceals the stone.

02Gomila
Large apartment buildings, known as the green and white buildings, are a distinctive feature of Gomila on the hillside above the Adriatic Highway. The three green buildings were first occupied toward the end of the last century, while the white buildings stand higher up the slope.
On one of the green buildings, balconies are set back into the facade and stacked one above another. Alongside some of the blocks, grassy areas with palm trees and concrete stairways with landings follow the slope down toward the street.
The street running beside the green buildings in the lower part of the neighborhood is named Naselje Novo mesto. Our article on everyday life in Igalo covers local habits, shopping and work in the town.
