Lovćen and Cetinje by car from Kotor, with Njeguši and the cable car
On Lovćen, you reach Njegoš's Mausoleum by climbing stairs through the mountain, then step out behind the monument onto a stone path above the rocky landscape. This trip from Kotor combines the climb with Njegoš's birthplace and the former royal capital. At Kuk, views of the Bay of Kotor and a cable car ride make the descent from the mountain to the bay a distinct part of the trip.

Why set aside a day for this trip
Lovćen offers a very different day during a stay by the Bay of Kotor: views from a mountain summit and a closer understanding of Montenegro's history in the places where it unfolded. In the museums, you enter the homes of a poet and a royal family, while at the mausoleum the sculpture, tomb and open landscape combine into one memorable visit. The return toward the bay adds another experience, the view from a cable car cabin on the slope of Lovćen. That combination of culture and scenery is worth a full day, especially in summer when the longer days allow more daylight for the final descent to Kotor.

Route, visits and breaks
This is a full day in the mountains, with seven hours for visits and a meal, all walking approaches and extra time for waiting. It fits best into long summer days and the season when the museums and cable car operate.
01From Kotor up the hairpin road to Njeguši
1 h driving · 45 min visit · 15 min for parking and access

Leave Kotor in the morning and open the prepared navigation route. Your first destination is the parking lot beside Njegoš's birthplace in Erakovići. The prepared route passes through Trojica and Krstac, keeping you on the mountain road toward Njeguši. Passing oncoming vehicles on the narrow sections of the Kotor hairpin road can slow the drive, so approximately an hour is allowed for this section.
Walk from the parking lot to the stone house and allow around 45 minutes for the memorial museum. The hearth, household objects and family displays provide your first introduction to Njegoš on this trip. The published 8 € ticket covers both the birthplace and the mausoleum, so keep the same ticket for your later visit on Lovćen. According to the National Museum's published opening hours, the house is open from April 15 to November 15, from 9:00 to 17:00.
This approach is planned for a passenger car. The seasonal places specific restrictions on buses, motorhomes and heavy trucks along this corridor. It replaces the earlier May announcement about time windows for all vehicle categories.
Questions before a day trip to Lovćen from Kotor
Are cars subject to daily directional restrictions on the Kotor hairpin road?
The earlier May order introduced time restrictions for all vehicle categories, but it was replaced by the order of June 12, 2026. The newer order, in force until October 15, restricts buses, motorhomes and heavy trucks without imposing the same daily time windows on ordinary passenger cars. Forum replies from May therefore do not establish a current ban for cars. Before setting out, check current announcements and road signs, especially for a new season.
Can I take the cable car to Njegoš's Mausoleum and return to my car?
The cable car ends at Kuk, while the mausoleum is on Jezerski Vrh. In this plan, you first drive to the mausoleum parking lot and visit on foot, then drive approximately six kilometers to the parking lot at Kuk. There you use a round-trip ticket for Kuk → Dub → Kuk. At Dub, you leave the cabin and board again for the ascent, returning to the same side of the mountain where your car is parked.
How demanding is the climb to the mausoleum?
There are 461 steps to the mausoleum, much of the way through a tunnel. The two-hour visit includes the climb, the monument, the views and the descent. The cable car ends on a different part of Lovćen and does not replace this climb. If stairs present a serious obstacle, the full visit will not suit your abilities. The open path to the circular viewpoint behind the mausoleum is a separate part of the visit, so you can skip it without giving up the monument's interior.
