Route, visits and breaks
The full plan works best on longer spring and summer days. Before setting out, check road conditions and whether Sokoline is serving lunch on the day of your visit.
01From Kotor via Grahovo to Carev most
2 h 45 min driving · 5 min parking · 20 min walking · 25 min visit

Leave Kotor in the morning and follow the coast through Dobrota toward Risan. At Lipci, turn inland and continue through Grahovo and Vilusi toward Nikšić. Allow about two hours and 45 minutes to reach Carev most, including the final approach to the selected parking lot.
Leave your car in the parking lot beside the bridge, then walk up to its stone arches and across part of the bridge. Allow about 20 minutes for the walk and return, plus 25 minutes to look around and take photographs. Look at the row of arches and piers stretching across the flat Nikšić plain, then return to your car.
02Continue to Sokoline for lunch
Questions before your trip to Ostrog
Can you visit Ostrog from Kotor in half a day?
Allow a full day for this route via Grahovo and Vilusi. Driving both ways accounts for approximately seven hours, while the full trip takes 13-14 hours, including Carev most, lunch, both levels of Ostrog, walking approaches and extra time. The full plan works best on a longer spring or summer day.
Can you drive all the way to Upper Ostrog?
This plan takes you to the higher public parking lot below the Upper Monastery and includes about 20 minutes to walk up and 15 minutes to return on foot. The final approach and the monastery interior have stairs. Whether you can drive to that parking lot depends on the access restrictions that day. If the car has to stay at Lower Ostrog, allow separately for the whole longer walk up and down, which is not included in the stated trip duration.
Is a visit worthwhile if you are not a pilgrim?
Yes. The cave churches, frescoes painted on rock and terraces above the Zeta valley also interest visitors coming for cultural heritage and architecture. Ostrog is an active monastery, so plan your visit around services and follow instructions on site. Wear clothing that covers your shoulders and knees when entering.
