Get to know the city you're staying in
People on the waterfront are doing more than visiting sights. Friends and families also come for a shared walk and conversation, so visitors meet people who use the city for their everyday needs. Everyday shopping also matters when staying in an apartment: food, household products and clothing are available beyond souvenir shops.
Evening gatherings depend on the program and the time of year. In summer, sports and music events bring people together outdoors, while the October program announces plays and film screenings in the hall. If you spend part of your stay working, a shared workspace also offers encounters with local entrepreneurs and other temporary users.
01Coffee and socialising
Coffee and socialising
Meeting on Tivat's waterfront can continue beyond a cafe table. People also come to walk together, including friends, neighbors, couples and families with children. For visitors, the waterfront is a place for everyday socializing: you can meet friends for coffee and continue the conversation on a walk.
Pine is one such meeting place. Alongside the cafes, people walk and talk, and the promenade continues toward Porto Montenegro.
02Shopping
Shopping
For everyday supplies in Tivat, you can use grocery stores that sell food and basic household products. This also helps during a short stay in an apartment, when you need everyday essentials as well as groceries. Clothing and shoes are available in town shops and at the marina, so shopping in the city covers personal needs as well as tourist souvenirs.
The market supplements this shopping with stock that can depend on the day's deliveries. At the fish market on Trg magnolija, small fish were most in demand in August, while other types arrived on some days. If you want to choose at the stall, what is available that day matters more than a list of species prepared in advance. Regular shopping on Sundays is subject to a separate restriction, explained after the city sections.
03Life in the city
Life in the city
Tivat's waterfront is a place for meeting and walking together. Arriving by car in summer can feel different from the walk you planned in the center: during the summer season, traffic at the entrance to town was heavier at certain times, especially on weekends and in the evening. Returning from a trip at those times could mean waiting in traffic before joining friends on the waterfront.
Alongside public walking areas, some parts of the shore serve residents who use boats. Kalimanj is the town marina used mainly by local owners of small boats. As you walk past, you see where local boats are moored, rather than just a marina view for visitors. For transit routes and other ways to get around, see our practical guide to Tivat.
04Recreation
Recreation
A shared walk along Tivat's waterfront combines movement with socializing. Couples and families walk together, so even a short visit lets you join in this kind of recreation by heading to the waterfront with your own group. Bocce also brings people together around the game: players are joined by family and friends, and the gathering can continue after the sporting program.
At the opening of the Bucarska olimpijada in Gradiosnica in July, players and many visitors gathered, and socializing continued with music. Attending a gathering like this can also mean watching the game with friends, without entering the competition. The summer event has its own program, so check the date and whether you can attend the next edition.
05Going out and nightlife
Going out and nightlife
Friends can also influence where an evening out takes you from Tivat. Among those who regularly spend time in town, some go to nearby cities to see friends.
People also gather in town for public music events. Both residents and visitors were on the waterfront for the concert that opened the tourist season in June. An evening like this lets visitors spend time with a local audience, rather than choosing only among bars.
Purgatorije offers theater as part of an evening out. The festival uses an open-air stage and the main hall at Centar za kulturu Tivat, where a play was performed for an audience in August. The hall's program continues beyond that summer festival: the October program announces plays and film screenings. Plan your evening around the current events program at Centar za kulturu Tivat, rather than assuming the summer festival reflects the program for every stay.
06Work and business
Work and business
Some of Tivat's work takes place before visitors head out to explore. Employees who maintain public areas have some very early duties, while summer brings more work in the heat. Watering before dawn and cleaning are part of the working day of people you may meet on an ordinary walk.
As they clean, Komunalno Tivat employees also have brief encounters with people: some greet them and stop to talk, while others pass without saying hello.
07Digital nomads

Temporary remote work in Tivat can also bring you into contact with local entrepreneurs. Local users, regular users from abroad and new visitors meet in a shared workspace. They exchange knowledge and skills alongside their work, so during your stay you may meet people who share your professional interests.
In September, Biznis info centar Tivat, in the former municipal building, had regular users from England and India, alongside visitors from other countries. The space can be used for a short working visit or a longer stay. It offers a way to work outside your apartment and meet other users, while getting to know the entrepreneurs based there depends on who is working at the time.
What changes on Sundays
If you cook your own meals during your stay in Tivat, shop for Sunday's everyday supplies in advance. Under the current law, shops are generally prohibited from trading on Sundays and on statutory public holidays.
Markets, pharmacies, stores specializing in baked goods and gas stations with associated facilities are among the legal exceptions. An exemption does not mean Tivat's market is actually open on Sundays, so check its opening hours separately before you go.
