Ten nights at one address leave room to discover Durmitor through its lakes, highest summit, canyon and complete scenic circuit instead of compressing the mountain into one hurried day. Longer drives into central Montenegro and down to the coast sit between the local outings. This gives the distant towns proper visiting time while your luggage stays in Zabljak.

Your ten day plan

The first two days focus on Zabljak, Black Lake and Bobotov Kuk. Ostrog and Niksic, Biogradska Gora, Boka Bay, the Budva Riviera and the southern coast follow before the Tara Canyon, Durmitor Ring and a final outing to Moraca and Podgorica. Every night is spent in Zabljak.

Day 1Zabljak, Black Lake and Savin KukBegin close to your base and learn how the town, Black Lake and the slopes below Savin Kuk fit together. The centre provides a useful reference point, the complete lakeside circuit introduces the Durmitor forest, and Ribnica brings the day beneath the open mountain ridges.7 to 8 hours | Overnight in Zabljak
60 minutesZabljak town centre

Leave the car in a public parking area near the centre and walk around Trg durmitorskih ratnika, the main shops and the restaurant streets. Use this first circuit to choose where you will buy supplies, have breakfast and return for dinner on later days. Collect the car from the same place and drive to the entrance for Black Lake.

30 to 45 minutesApproach to Black Lake

Park by the national park entrance and follow the prepared forest path on foot. The approach opens its first view of Medjed behind the water and reaches the shore beside the start of the circular trail. Look around the landing area, identify the direction of the full circuit and begin the lakeside walk from there.

2 to 2.5 hoursComplete Black Lake circuit

The path circles both Veliko jezero and Malo jezero through conifer forest, open stretches of shoreline and the narrow connection between the two bodies of water. Walk the complete loop to see how the view towards Medjed and Savin Kuk changes. Finish where you first reached the shore and use the same forest approach back to the car.

1.5 to 2 hoursRibnica and the foot of Savin Kuk

Drive from Black Lake towards the Ribnica settlement and the lower station at Savin Kuk. Use the large parking area beside the ski centre, then walk across the meadows beneath the rocky slopes. The open ground gives a clear view of the ascent towards Savin Kuk, and the short exploration ends beside the same vehicle.

About 15 minutesReturn to central Zabljak

Drive back from Ribnica to your accommodation and leave the car there for the night. Walk into the centre for dinner instead of beginning another excursion. You finish the first day at the same address and can leave early for Sedlo the following morning.

Day 2Bobotov Kuk from Sedlo and Zeleni VirDevote the second day to one complete mountain objective. The marked trail from Sedlo passes Zeleni Vir and Velika Previja on its way to Bobotov Kuk. Returning by the same line brings you back to your own car before the short drive to Zabljak.9 to 11 hours | Overnight in Zabljak
About 30 minutes by carZabljak to Sedlo pass

Leave Zabljak for Sedlo and park beside the beginning of the marked walking trail. Pack water, food and layered clothing before you set out because there is no return to the vehicle during the climb. From the parking area, follow the trail markings directly towards Zeleni Vir.

1.5 to 2 hours on footSedlo to Zeleni Vir

The first part passes beneath Sedlena Greda and enters a high valley between Durmitor summits. Remain on the marked route as the ground opens towards Zeleni Vir, the small lake below the final climbs. Take a proper break at the water before continuing uphill towards Velika Previja.

1.5 to 2 hours on footZeleni Vir and Velika Previja

Beyond Zeleni Vir, the path rises to Velika Previja and meets the route arriving from Black Lake. The terrain grows steeper here and demands steady footing on rock. Pause on the pass to study the final ridge, then keep to the marked trail towards the summit.

60 to 90 minutes for the final climb and summitBobotov Kuk

The last section to Bobotov Kuk crosses steep, exposed ground and suits experienced hikers with suitable footwear. The summit opens views over Zeleni Vir, the Skrcka Lakes and the main Durmitor ridges. Begin the descent on the same marked path towards Velika Previja and Zeleni Vir.

3 to 4 hours on foot and 30 minutes by carBobotov Kuk back to Zabljak

Descend through Velika Previja and Zeleni Vir to the parking area at Sedlo, following the route used on the climb. Reaching the vehicle completes the hike without arranging transport from another side of the massif. Drive directly from Sedlo to your accommodation in Zabljak.

Day 3Ostrog Monastery, Niksic and Krupac LakeLeave the mountain for a day that combines the monastery built into the rock with the planned centre of Niksic and the shore of Krupac Lake. Ostrog receives the quiet morning, the city a complete walking circuit, and the lake the final pause before the drive home.10 to 12 hours | Overnight in Zabljak
About 2 hoursDrive from Zabljak to Ostrog

Travel from Zabljak through Savnik and Niksic, then follow the signs to the parking area at the Lower Monastery. The final approach contains several bends, so count the driving time through to the car park rather than the first turn for Ostrog. Your visit to both levels begins here.

2 to 2.5 hoursLower and Upper Ostrog monasteries

At the Lower Monastery, visit the Holy Trinity Church and the space around the guest buildings. Continue by car along the signed approach to the parking below the Upper Monastery, then take the steps for the last section. The cave churches and rock terraces complete the visit before you return to the car for Niksic.

2 to 2.5 hoursNiksic and Freedom Square

Park near Freedom Square and explore the regular grid of central streets on foot. Include the Cathedral Church of Saint Basil of Ostrog, King Nikola's Palace and the remains of Bedem Fortress, then return towards the square for lunch. The walking circuit finishes beside the same parking place.

60 to 75 minutesKrupac Lake

Drive from the centre to the main approach for Krupac Lake and leave the car in the area beside the shore. Walk by the water and look towards the hills west of Niksic while taking a break after the monastery and city visits. Return to the vehicle for the final drive to Zabljak.

About 1 hour 30 minutesNiksic to Zabljak

From Krupac, pass back through Niksic and continue through Savnik to Zabljak. This closes the inland circuit without approaching Ostrog a second time. Park at your accommodation on arrival and spend the third night in the same base.

Day 4Biogradsko Lake and KolasinFollow the Tara valley to the old forest of Biogradska Gora and central Kolasin. The lake receives a complete woodland circuit, while the town provides time for lunch and a walk around its main square before the northbound return.9 to 10 hours | Overnight in Zabljak
About 1 hour 45 minutesZabljak to Biogradska Gora

Drive from Zabljak towards Djurdjevica Tara Bridge and Mojkovac, then follow the approach into Biogradska Gora National Park. Leave the vehicle at the parking area beside Biogradsko Lake, where the driving ends and the woodland part begins. The shore and start of the circular path are immediately beyond the car park.

2 to 2.5 hoursBiogradsko Lake

Walk the full trail around Biogradsko Lake through dense forest, across wooden footbridges and beside open sections of shore. A complete circuit reveals several faces of the old woodland and returns you to the starting point. Take the same short approach to the parking area and continue to Kolasin.

1.5 to 2 hoursKolasin and Trg Boraca

Park in central Kolasin and visit Trg Boraca, the Memorial House and the surrounding streets. Have lunch in town because the remaining part of the day is the return through the Tara valley. End the walk at the same parking area and set off towards Mojkovac.

About 1 hour 40 minutesReturn through the Tara valley

Travel back from Kolasin through Mojkovac and past Djurdjevica Tara Bridge to Zabljak. Biogradsko Lake and Kolasin now form one complete excursion without changing accommodation. Leave the car at your base and finish the evening in Zabljak centre.

Day 5Kotor and PerastThe fifth day is a long trip to two very different historic towns on Boka Bay. Spend the morning among Kotor's gates, squares and churches, then give the afternoon to Perast and the boat trip to Our Lady of the Rocks. Each town has one parking point and a clear walk back to the car.13 to 15 hours | Overnight in Zabljak
About 2 hours 45 minutesZabljak to Kotor and Benovo parking

Drive from Zabljak through Savnik and Niksic towards Kotor. On arrival, use Benovo parking for quick pedestrian access to the North Gate without circling the walls in the car. Save the parking location and complete the entire Old Town visit on foot.

2.5 to 3 hoursKotor Old Town

Enter through the North Gate and walk to Saint Mary's Church, Flour Square and Saint Tryphon's Cathedral. Continue past the churches of Saint Luke and Saint Nicholas to Arms Square and the Sea Gate. Complete the circuit through the inner lanes and return to Benovo for the car.

About 25 minutesKotor to Perast

Collect the car at Benovo and follow the bay shore to Perast. Leave the vehicle in the public parking area at the entrance because the narrow waterfront is best covered on foot. Walk from the car park towards Saint Nicholas Church and the jetty for the island boats.

2.5 to 3 hoursPerast and Our Lady of the Rocks

Follow the waterfront into central Perast and arrange a return boat ride to Our Lady of the Rocks at the jetty. Visit the church, museum collection and the open space looking towards the Verige Strait. After the boat returns, walk farther along the shore before retracing your steps to the entrance parking.

About 3 hoursPerast back to Zabljak

Leave Perast through Risan and continue by Niksic and Savnik to Zabljak. After two substantial walking visits, the rest of the day is a direct drive to the base. Park beside your accommodation and keep the same room for the next morning.

Day 6Petrovac, Sveti Stefan and BudvaMove along the Budva Riviera in one direction from Petrovac to Budva. Kastio Fortress supplies the historic opening, Sveti Stefan and Milocer form one coastal walk, and Budva Old Town becomes the substantial final visit before the journey north.14 to 16 hours | Overnight in Zabljak
About 3 hours 15 minutesZabljak to Petrovac

Leave Zabljak through Savnik, Niksic and Podgorica for Petrovac. Use the public parking area near the bus station, which gives pedestrian access to the promenade without driving along the waterfront. Walk downhill from there towards the western end of the bay.

1.5 to 2 hoursPetrovac and Kastio Fortress

Follow the complete promenade to Kastio Fortress and climb to the terrace above the small harbour. The view takes in Petrovac Bay, the islets of Katic and Sveta Nedjelja, and the coastline stretching north. Return along the promenade to the car and continue towards Sveti Stefan.

2 to 2.5 hoursSveti Stefan and Milocer Park

Park above the shore at Sveti Stefan and descend to the viewpoint facing the island village. Continue through Milocer Park towards Milocer Beach and Queen's Beach, following paths through the former royal grounds. Complete the connected coastal walk by returning to the vehicle on the same route.

2.5 to 3 hoursBudva Old Town

Use the public parking area beside the Old Town at the end of Mediteranska Street. Beyond the main gate, link Poets Square, the churches of Saint John and Holy Trinity, the Citadel and a section of the walls above the sea. Finish near the marina and walk back to the parked car.

About 3 hoursBudva to Zabljak

Leave Budva for Cetinje and Podgorica, then continue through Niksic and Savnik to Zabljak. Visiting Petrovac, Sveti Stefan and Budva in this order keeps the entire return in one direction. The sixth day ends when you park at your accommodation.

Day 7Old Bar, Ulcinj and Long BeachStart early for the southernmost journey in the plan. The fortress of Old Bar receives its own detailed visit, Ulcinj gets a full circuit through the stone lanes, and Long Beach provides the last walk by the sea before the long return to Zabljak.15 to 17 hours | Overnight in Zabljak
About 3 hours 30 minutesZabljak to Old Bar

Drive through Niksic and Podgorica towards Bar, then continue to the foot of Old Bar. Park beside the beginning of the old bazaar and walk over the cobbles towards the fortress entrance. Keep the car here throughout the first visit of the southern day.

2 to 2.5 hoursOld Bar Fortress

Inside the walls, follow the paths among former churches, the palace remains, aqueduct and Clock Tower. Views towards Mount Rumija and modern Bar explain why the fortified settlement occupied this position above the plain. Descend through the bazaar to the vehicle and continue to Ulcinj.

2 to 2.5 hoursUlcinj Old Town

Park in the public area above Small Beach and approach the Old Town on foot. Pass through the gate to the former slave market square, Balsic Tower and the stone lanes overlooking the Adriatic. Complete the loop back towards Small Beach and the same parking area.

1.5 to 2 hoursLong Beach

Continue from the centre to Donji Stoj and use the main developed access to Long Beach. Leave the car beside that entrance, walk along the broad sandy shore and allow time for a late lunch. Return to the same approach before beginning the drive north.

About 3 hours 45 minutesUlcinj to Zabljak

Return from Long Beach through Bar and Podgorica, then continue via Niksic and Savnik to Zabljak. Old Bar, Ulcinj and the shore now make one closed southern circuit. Leave the vehicle at your accommodation and complete the longest coastal day at the same base.

Day 8Curevac, Tara Bridge and Crna PodaSee the Tara Canyon from three different levels and include the historic monastery in its valley. Curevac looks into the gorge from above, Djurdjevica Tara Bridge crosses the open canyon, and Dobrilovina with Crna Poda brings you close to the river and its black pine forest.9 to 10 hours | Overnight in Zabljak
About 30 minutes by carZabljak to Curevac

Leave Zabljak towards the village of Bosaca and continue to the parking area for Curevac viewpoint. A marked walking path leads from the vehicle through the forest to the open ground above the canyon. Keep the car in this parking place for the full visit and carry water for the climb back.

1.5 to 2 hoursCurevac viewpoint

The woodland path reaches a ridge looking deep into the Tara Canyon and across the mountains north of Zabljak. Walk to the principal viewpoint, remain on the marked trail and return by the same path. Continue from the parking area towards Djurdjevica Tara Bridge.

60 to 75 minutesDjurdjevica Tara Bridge

Leave the car in the prepared area beside the bridge approach and walk out towards the middle of the span. From here you can see the Tara far below, the wooded canyon walls and the sequence of large concrete arches. Return to the same parking area and continue downstream towards Dobrilovina.

45 to 60 minutesDobrilovina Monastery

Turn towards Dobrilovina and leave the vehicle beside the monastery approach before entering the small complex on foot. Visit Saint George's Church and its courtyard beneath the forested canyon sides. Return to the car after the visit and continue to the Crna Poda special reserve.

60 to 75 minutes on foot and about 1 hour backCrna Poda and the return to Zabljak

Stop beside the marked entrance to Crna Poda and walk through part of the tall black pine forest above the Tara. This final visit completes the sequence from high viewpoint to bridge and woodland in the valley. Drive back past Djurdjevica Tara Bridge to your accommodation in Zabljak.

Day 9Durmitor Ring through Trsa and SedloDrive the complete Durmitor Ring in one direction. The circuit reaches Mala Crna Gora and Nedajno above the Susica Canyon, continues through Trsa and Pisce, crosses Sedlo and returns to Zabljak without retracing the earlier mountain sections.9 to 11 hours | Overnight in Zabljak
About 1 hour by car and 30 minutes in the villageMala Crna Gora

Begin on the northern side of the Durmitor Ring and drive from Zabljak to Mala Crna Gora. Park in the centre of the village to see how its houses and pastures occupy the high ground between the Tara and Susica canyons. Take a short walk, then continue towards Nedajno.

About 45 minutes by car and 45 to 60 minutes at the viewpointNedajno and Susica Canyon

Beyond Mala Crna Gora, the road descends towards Nedajno across the high Durmitor plateau. Use the roadside space by the marked view of Susica Canyon and walk to the open point above the deep valley. Return to the vehicle and follow the circuit towards Trsa.

About 1 hour by car and 60 to 75 minutes in the villageTrsa

Leave the car in central Trsa and stop for lunch featuring food from the Piva and Durmitor region. The village's position halfway around the Ring gives a clear pause between Susica Canyon and the final mountain passes. Continue towards Pisce after the meal.

About 30 minutes by car and 30 to 45 minutes for the stopPisce and the mountain plateau

The road from Trsa crosses open country towards Pisce with views over pasture and the steep Durmitor slopes. Park in the village for a short walk before the final climb of the circuit. From Pisce, continue directly towards Sedlo pass.

About 1 hour with the stop and 30 minutes to townSedlo and return to Zabljak

Park beside Sedlo and walk to the open view of Sedlena Greda and the surrounding summits. The pass completes the mountain section of the Ring and meets the road already used for the second day's hike. Return to the car and close the circuit at your accommodation in Zabljak.

Day 10Moraca Monastery and PodgoricaFollow the Tara and Moraca valleys to the monastery and the capital. The religious complex receives an unhurried morning visit, while Stara Varos, the confluence of the Ribnica and Moraca, Njegos Park and the city bridges form one walk from a single garage before the return north.12 to 13 hours | Overnight in Zabljak
About 2 hoursZabljak to Moraca Monastery

About 1 hour by carNovaka Miloseva Street parking

Use the public garage on Novaka Miloseva Street in central Podgorica and save the exact entrance location. The entire city circuit can be completed on foot from here, so the car does not move between nearby sights. Begin across Independence Square towards Stara Varos.

2 to 2.5 hoursStara Varos and Sastavci

Walk from Independence Square to the Clock Tower on Becir Beg Osmanagic Square and continue through the stone lanes of Stara Varos. Mistakes that disrupt the ten day plan

What breaks the daily circuits from Zabljak

The programme depends on one base, separate mountain experiences and early departures for the long coastal drives. These choices alter the order of a whole day and take time away from its main destinations.

01Moving accommodation between outings

Every day is planned as a complete circuit from Zabljak. An overnight stay in Kotor, Ulcinj or Kolasin changes the next starting point, the order of later stops and the purpose of the itinerary.

02Combining Bobotov Kuk with the Durmitor Ring

The ascent from Sedlo through Zeleni Vir and the drive through Nedajno, Trsa and Pisce require separate days. Joining them removes the time needed both for the summit and for the villages around the Ring.

03Searching for parking beside coastal walls

Kotor, Budva and Ulcinj each work from one selected parking area. Moving the car between nearby sights interrupts the walking circuit and stretches days that are already long.

04Repeating the same Durmitor stops

Black Lake belongs to the first day, Sedlo serves different purposes on the hiking and Ring days, and Tara has its own canyon circuit. Repeating the same ground would reduce the time for Nedajno, Trsa, Dobrilovina and Crna Poda.

Practical details

  • Base confirm parking at the same Zabljak accommodation for all ten nights
  • Bobotov Kuk reserve the full day and follow the marked path from Sedlo through Zeleni Vir
  • Boka Bay use Benovo in Kotor and the public parking area at Perast's entrance
  • Coast start early because both coastal circuits return to Zabljak
  • Monasteries bring clothing that covers shoulders and knees for Ostrog, Dobrilovina and Moraca
  • Podgorica save the entrance to the garage on Novaka Miloseva Street
  • Return finish every day at the parking area of your Zabljak accommodation

Who will enjoy ten days based in Zabljak

This plan suits travellers who want one mountain base, four genuinely different Durmitor days and long outings to the rest of Montenegro. It requires an appetite for three demanding coastal journeys and one serious hiking day, while the local plans devote more time to walking and the canyon.

Questions about ten days from Zabljak

Do I return to Zabljak every night?

Yes. Every daily plan starts at your accommodation in Zabljak and ends back at its parking area, including the trips to Kotor, Ulcinj, Podgorica and Ostrog.

Which days involve the longest journeys?

The southern day for Old Bar and Ulcinj, the Budva Riviera and the Boka Bay trip involve the most driving. Bobotov Kuk needs less time in the car but contains the longest continuous walk.

How do the Tara Canyon day and Durmitor Ring differ?

The canyon day connects Curevac, the Tara Bridge, Dobrilovina and Crna Poda. The Durmitor Ring follows villages and passes through Mala Crna Gora, Nedajno, Trsa, Pisce and Sedlo.
