The lake, mountain climbs and guided outings

Things to do in Zabljak

Beside Crno jezero (Black Lake), you can spend time in the forest shade and row beneath Durmitor's peaks, while the climb to Bobotov kuk leads through rocky high mountain terrain. Zabljak is also a starting point for e-bike rides, horseback riding and rafting on the Tara. In winter, the choice changes: skiing on Savin kuk and snowshoeing depend on snow and suitable conditions.

You'll find activities around Zabljak and outings that take you farther from town here. You can compare independent walking and rowing with a demanding climb or a guided program. The overview shows the experience, published duration and way to take part, while the two maps separate locations near town from mountain starting areas.

For lakes, viewpoints and historic sites to explore, see the sights of Zabljak. Lesser-known places include other lakeside walks, among them Zminje and Jablan lakes. Ideas for a stay of several days and onward travel are in the final section.

Activity locations

Locations near town and mountain starting areas

The first map shows the lake and meeting locations for guided activities. The second shows the Sedlo pass and the center of the Savin kuk ski area. Walking and rowing share the lake marker, while skiing and snowshoeing share the Ski Center marker, with links to the first description in each group of activities. The exact trail start and boat boarding point are established on site, using signs and the operator's instructions.

01
Walking and rowing on Black Lake

Walking around Black Lake

Black Lake with its forested shore and Medjed in the background

The lakeside trail runs through conifer forest and open stretches with views across the water toward Medjed. As you walk around the lake, the shelter of the trees and the breadth of the view change, making this a choice for a gentler outing by the water with breaks whenever you choose. The national park lists about 3.6 km and an hour of walking for its educational circuit. Travel from your accommodation and time spent on the shore make the outing longer.

This is an independent walk, with an admission ticket for Durmitor National Park. Choose footwear for a forest trail, as roots and wet ground need more care than a town sidewalk. The lake is marked on Google Maps, but this marks the area, not a parking lot. For the lake itself and visiting conditions, read the description of Black Lake in Attractions.

Rowing a wooden boat on Black Lake

From the water, the view opens toward Medjed and other peaks above the forested shore. A wooden boat from the national park's rental service lets you row the boat yourself and spend time out on the lake rather than follow the lakeside trail. Ask the ranger on duty at the lake about an available boat and where to board.

The park's published price list gives a boat rental rate of 10 € per hour, separate from park admission. Rental availability depends on conditions on the water and the service at the lake. The shared Black Lake marker on Google Maps shows the activity area, while the ranger decides the exact boarding point.

02
The climb to Bobotov kuk

Bobotov kuk from Sedlo via Zeleni vir

Grassy and rocky terrain around the Sedlo pass

From Sedlo, the trail passes through Surutka and Zeleni vir toward Bobotov kuk, at 2,523 m. The meadow at the start gives way to rocky climbs, with views from higher ground toward the peaks and Skrcka lakes. The final approach is steep and exposed, so choose this outing with hiking experience and equipment for that terrain, or with a guide who has assessed your readiness.

The tourism organization lists three hours of ascent and two and a half hours of descent to Sedlo for this marked route. That is walking time, with travel, rest and time at the summit added on top. Snow, fog and bad weather can affect your route choice and whether the trail is passable, so ask the park or a guide for a current assessment before setting out. Sedlo on Google Maps marks the mountain pass, without a marked parking lot or precise trail start.

03
Cycling and horseback riding on the plateau

The guided Village Loop e-bike ride

Durmitor Adventure's Village Loop follows gravel roads and forest stretches around Zabljak, with gentle climbs. The ride is intended for recreational cyclists who want a first outing off the pavement without a technically demanding route. Electric assistance makes the climbs easier, while you still pedal and steer over uneven ground.

The guided program includes an e-bike, helmet and guide, while lunch is arranged separately. When booking, agree on a pace suited to the participants' experience and ask for the duration of this particular loop. The operator lists a meeting at Bike Station on Tripka Dzakovica. Bad weather may move the ride to another time or cancel it.

The one-hour Lake Plateau horseback ride

The Lake Plateau program crosses the meadows of the Jezerska povrs plateau, with Durmitor's peaks in the background. The instructor matches the horse and the ride to the participant's experience, so beginners can also take part at a suitable level. The operator lists one hour of riding for this program, with time to meet the horse and prepare before that part of the outing.

The ride must be arranged in advance. The published rider weight limit is 110 kg, so clarify that condition before booking if it affects your participation. Google Maps shows Montenegro Horse Riding in Juncedo, and when booking you should confirm the arrival time and meeting place for your chosen session.

04
Rafting through the Tara Canyon

Half-day Tara rafting with transportation from Zabljak

The bridge at Djurdjevica Tara above the river and forested canyon sides

Rafting lets you experience the Tara from the water, between the canyon's wooded and rocky sides. You paddle to the skipper's instructions, and Durmitor Adventure's half-day program covers about 10 km of river, passing under the bridge and stopping at Ljutica. Rapids and calmer stretches alternate during the same outing, with the strength of the current depending on the water level.

The published program takes about four hours including transportation, with roughly two hours on the water. It includes transportation from Zabljak and back, a skipper and the listed rafting equipment. For departure from town, choose the meeting option at the office at Vuka Karadzica 9, which is marked on the map. That is the start of transportation, while the operator confirms the boarding point and departure time according to the program and river conditions.

05
Skiing and snowshoeing in winter

Skiing on Savin kuk

On Savin kuk, you can begin with lessons on beginner terrain or choose descents suited to the experience you already have. The tourism organization describes blue and red runs and a black run, offering different levels of difficulty within the same ski area.

This is a winter activity that depends on snow and the ski area's operation. Before arriving, confirm which runs and lifts are open and whether lessons are available for your dates, then choose a ski pass or lessons accordingly. The Google Maps marker is at the base of the ski area, by its center, while the summit of Savin kuk is a different location. How long you ski depends on your chosen lesson or ski pass and your own pace.

Snowshoeing from Savin kuk to Black Lake

The marked winter trail leads from the Savin kuk Ski Center through spruce and fir forest to the shore of Black Lake, with gentle climbs and descents. The national park lists 6.7 km and about two hours for this one-way trail, while the return requires separate transportation or more walking.

Snowshoes can be rented at the Visitor Center in the park's administration building, so collect your equipment before traveling to the start. The price list gives a daily equipment rental rate of 4 €, without a guide. In snowy conditions, confirm the state of the trail markings and the winter equipment needed with the park. The map shows the Ski Center, without a separately marked start for this trail.

Other outings and plans for your stay

For ways to spread activities over several days, see the suggested itineraries from Zabljak. The three-day plan combines walks around Black Lake and to Zminje Lake, a drive to Sedlo and the lakes of Jezerska povrs, and a view of the Tara Canyon from Curevac. Overnight stays are in Zabljak, and the drives and walks described are for planning an independent stay.

If you are continuing your journey to the coast and want other outings, the driving itineraries from Budva let you compare routes and places to visit. They include a trip to Cetinje and Lovcen with Njegos's Mausoleum. These outings start in Budva, so choose them for that part of your trip.

Transportation to a mountain starting pointFor the climb from Sedlo or a day on Savin kuk, compare car rentals for your chosen dates. For rafting with transportation included and other guided programs, establish the meeting place first, then arrange your journey there.

Questions about solo travel and choosing a program

Can I join a guided e-bike ride if I am traveling alone?

Durmitor Adventure lists a minimum of two people for its guided e-bike rides, with a possible special arrangement for one participant. If you are traveling alone, give your date and cycling experience, then ask for confirmation of the program offered and its price.

Does a four-hour e-bike rental include a guide?

No. The same operator lists 35 € for four hours for hardtail e-bike rental. A guided ride has a different scope, with a guide and an agreed route option.

Can I return from Bobotov kuk to Black Lake instead of Sedlo?

That is a different, longer route. The tourism organization lists about four hours for the descent toward Black Lake, separately from the return to Sedlo. On that outing, you finish far from the starting pass, so arrange transportation and the full hiking plan before setting out. The five and a half hours shown here apply only to the climb from Sedlo and the return there.
