Day trip by car from Petrovac

Ulcinj, Long Beach and Ada Bojana by car from Petrovac

People still live in Ulcinj Old Town, where the walls enclose homes, stone streets and terraces above the sea. A different coastline begins to the south, with a long sandy beach and a river island at the end of the road. This trip from Petrovac connects the old maritime town with the Bojana River, where wooden houses and restaurants stand right beside a branch of the river.

Why set aside a day for this trip

Ulcinj brings together a maritime town, a long sandy coast and life beside the Bojana River. It is worth setting aside a day to explore a fortress where people still live, relax on the sand and reach the seaward side of a river island.

Leaving Petrovac and visiting the Old Olive Tree in Mirovica

50 min driving · 30 min for access and the visit

The branching trunk of the Old Olive Tree behind protective posts in Mirovica
The Old Olive Tree in Mirovica

Set off in the morning along the coastal road through Sutomore and Bar. The first visit is the Old Olive Tree in Mirovica, close to the main road towards Ulcinj. The prepared driving route ends at the site's access point, about a 120-metre walk from the tree. Do not enter the Kuća maslina showroom in Stari Bar as your destination, since that is a different location.

Allow about 25 minutes to look around. Walk through the maintained area around the broad, branching trunk and read the information about the tree's estimated age. Adult admission is 2 €. The operator lists visiting hours as 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily.

Questions before you go

Are Long Beach and Ada Bojana the same place?

No. Long Beach is on the mainland, between Port Milena and the right branch of the Bojana River. Ada is the island across that branch, with its own seaside beach and holiday resort. The route therefore includes a separate stop at Long Beach and a walk across the bridge through the island resort to Maestral.

Can you visit Ada without going to the nudist beach?

Yes. The walk crosses the bridge to Maestral restaurant, where normal clothing is allowed under the resort operator's rules. The hotel beach and its shoreline are naturist areas, so this itinerary does not use them for walking in clothes or swimming in swimwear. The separate stop at Long Beach is planned for time on a non-naturist beach.

Can you drive this route in a standard car?

Yes, using the specified access roads and car parks. The prepared driving route does not follow the sandy shore or require driving over dunes. The final approaches to some beach facilities can be uneven or unpaved, so check that these sections are permitted under the terms of your particular hire agreement. The island walk is about 3.3 km in total, including the return, while the car stays before the bridge.

From Mirovica, continue towards Ulcinj, then descend to the car park at Valdanos Bay. The approach passes through olive-growing countryside and ends by a pebbled shore between green slopes. Compared with driving straight to Ulcinj, Valdanos adds about five kilometres.

Allow about 50 minutes for parking, walking to the shore and spending time in the bay. The walk to the water and back to the car park is approximately 700 metres. View the olive groves from the public access road. Individual groves are privately owned, so the visit does not include crossing fences or entering other people's land.

Ulcinj Old Town, sightseeing and lunch within the walls

20 min driving · 2 h 45 min for parking, sightseeing and lunch

The walls of Ulcinj Old Town above the sea in the evening light
Ulcinj Old Town in the evening light

From Valdanos, head back towards town and park on the approach from Buda Tomovića Street, above the Old Town. Leave the car outside the walls. Allow about two hours and 45 minutes for parking, sightseeing and lunch. This includes an hour and a half to explore, an hour for the meal and 15 minutes for parking and the approach.

Enter from the upper, landward side and follow the stone streets towards the southern part of the town and its sea views. The walk links defensive walls with homes, steps and buildings still in use today. The museum complex and Balšić Tower stand in the upper part, while some of the palaces below have been converted into accommodation. Follow the public streets and view these buildings from outside. Entry to the museum galleries depends on opening hours and a separate admission ticket.

The walk to the southern part and back is about 1.1 km, but the visiting time also allows for sightseeing and short detours into side streets.

Have lunch here before continuing to the beach and the Bojana River. Dulcinea 1984 is a family restaurant in the southern part of the Old Town, with a terrace facing the sea. It is included in the prepared walking route.

Long Beach, a longer break on the sand

30 min driving · 1 h 10 min for access and the beach

A path through the developed part of Copacabana to the sandy shore
The beach access path at Copacabana

From Ulcinj, continue along the road behind Long Beach to the Copacabana access point. Navigation leads to the car park beside Rruga 16. The walk from the car park to the beach access and back is about 300 metres, so allow roughly ten minutes for parking and walking.

Leave about an hour for the shore. This gives you time to walk by the sea, rest and swim when conditions are suitable.

Copacabana has its own car park for guests. Before leaving the car, check whether parking depends on using its beach facilities or carries a separate charge. Sun loungers and other beach equipment are charged separately and are not admission fees for the visits listed in the opening overview.

A riverside break at Miško

20 min driving · 45 min for parking, walking and a break

The wooden interior of Miško restaurant beside the Bojana River

Continue through Štoj to the car park before the bridge to Ada Bojana. The car stays on the mainland bank, about an 80-metre walk from Miško restaurant. Allow ten minutes for parking, five for the walk to the restaurant and back, and about half an hour for a riverside break.

Miško is a fish restaurant beside the Bojana River, with a wooden interior and views of the water. After the beach, stop for a drink before the longer island walk. Boats and houses line the banks of the river branch that you will then cross by bridge.

Return from the restaurant to the same car before starting the island walk. Outside the main season, check that Miško is open during the day.

Across the bridge to the seaside part of Ada Bojana resort

1 h walking · 45 min for the resort and a break

An aerial view of the seaside part of Ada Bojana resort and a branch of the river
The seaside part of Ada Bojana resort and a river branch from above

From the car park, cross the bridge and follow the island road to Maestral restaurant in the seaside part of the resort. It is about 1.65 km each way. Allow about an hour for the walk there and back, plus another 45 minutes to look around the resort and rest in the restaurant area beside the sea. The full walk there and back is about 3.3 km and ends at the same car before the bridge.

The approach first takes you past the river branch and waterfront houses, then towards the flat seaside part of the resort. The walk ends at Maestral, in the part facing the open sea. The operator allows normal clothing in restaurants, while the hotel beach and its shoreline are naturist areas. The planned break is therefore in the restaurant area. Going onto the beach means following its rules, and photographing other guests is not allowed.

Plan your visit during the operating season of Ada Bojana resort, and check Maestral's opening outside the main summer months. The operator has announced that pedestrians do not pay to enter the island. Parking on Ada is charged separately, while the car on this itinerary stays before the bridge.

Returning to Petrovac along the coast

1 h 50 min driving

Allow about an hour and 50 minutes to drive back through Ulcinj, Bar and Sutomore. The prepared route stays on the coast and does not go through the Sozina Tunnel. There are no tolls on this route.

The full itinerary, including sightseeing, the beach, lunch, walks to and from the car and the return drive, takes about 13 hours. This allows for slower driving than the navigation system's basic estimate and an extra half hour of buffer time. At the height of summer, congestion through coastal towns can extend the day.

Trip highlights

01

The Old Olive Tree, Mirovica's living heritage

The Old Olive Tree in Mirovica is protected within a maintained site close to the main road from Bar towards Ulcinj. Its broad trunk branches low to the ground, revealing hollows, an irregular base and sections of wood with different textures when seen up close. Protective posts around the tree separate the visitor area from its roots.

Samples tested during a project in 2014 and 2015 gave an estimated age of approximately 2,240 years at the time of analysis. The olive tree has suffered damage over the years, including a fire in 1958 and the loss of part of its trunk in 2004. Drainage was installed after problems with high groundwater, and the operator recorded vigorous new growth in spring 2024.

Local stories link the name Mirovica to feuding families making peace beneath the olive tree. This oral tradition accompanies the tree's role as one of the recognisable symbols of olive growing around Bar.

02

Valdanos, a bay beyond old olive groves

Valdanos is a horseshoe-shaped bay between Mendra and Mavrijan, with a pebbled shore and slopes enclosing it on the landward side. Old olive groves spread along its approaches. They are part of Ulcinj's agricultural heritage, recognisable by branching trunks, widely spaced crowns and dry-stone walls.

The bay also had a maritime role. Ships sheltered here from storms, and a quarantine station stood at its head. Vessels suspected of carrying disease waited here before continuing to port. In 1833, an Ulcinj brigantine arriving from Alexandria was held in Valdanos for 40 days.

03

Ulcinj Old Town, a lived-in fortress above the sea

Ulcinj Old Town occupies a rocky rise directly above the sea. The walls separating it from the shore preserve traces of different periods, from the earliest remains of an Illyrian fortification to later additions. Two gates connected the town with land and sea, so their positions and the lines of the streets help explain how people entered the fortified settlement.

Inside the walls, houses cluster along narrow stone streets. Steps and short passages follow the slope, with views of the Adriatic opening between buildings. The houses and palaces now contain homes, restaurants and visitor accommodation.

Balšić Tower stands beside the museum complex in the upper part. Below are the buildings known as Palata Venezia and Dvori Balšića. They are now used for accommodation, and their guest areas are not public museum spaces. The town's maritime setting is most apparent on the southern side, where the sea opens out beyond stone houses. The upper walls show how the landward approach was defended.

04

Long Beach, sand and open sea

Long Beach, locally known as Velika Plaža, stretches from Port Milena towards the Bojana River in a long strip of fine sand. Behind the water's edge, the ground is low and flat, with dunes and coastal vegetation. The sense of space is different from the sheltered pebble coves around Petrovac. From the shore, the view extends along the beach and far out to sea.

Wind is a defining feature here and the reason kitesurfing schools have developed along the beach. On windy days, kites fly above the sea.

Copacabana is one of the organised access points to this broad stretch of coast, with beach facilities, food and drink, and parking. The shore is reached from the road through Štoj, with a path leading to the sea through Copacabana's facilities.

05

Ada Bojana, an island between river and sea

Ada Bojana is a triangular river island bounded by two branches of the Bojana River and the Adriatic Sea. Its formation and coastline are shaped by sand and sediment carried to the river mouth. As a result, the positions of sandbars and the width of the beach change over time.

The seaside resort is known for a naturist tradition dating from the 1970s. Bungalows, a campsite, restaurants and sports areas occupy the flat ground beside the beach. The island extends beyond the hotel resort to include riverbanks lined with wooden houses and moored boats.
