01Getting from the airport to Podgorica
Getting from the airport to Podgorica
In this section, you can compare the bus, train, taxi and hire car options for reaching Podgorica.
Bus to the main bus station
The bus is a practical compromise between price and comfort - you board outside the terminal without going to a distant station. It takes you to Podgorica Main Bus Station on Trg Golootockih zrtava. If your accommodation is in another part of the city, you still need to continue to that address, which is worth including when comparing the bus with a taxi.
Train to Podgorica Railway Station
The train’s lower fare is attractive, especially if you are travelling light and are not tied to a tight schedule. Aerodrom station is approximately a 1.3-kilometre walk away, so this option starts on foot and ends at Podgorica Railway Station, next to the main bus station. The station is small, with basic waiting facilities, and the gap between departures can be almost three hours. Delays also occur on this line.
Taxi transport from the airport
You can book Zeta Taxi for a trip from TGD to your chosen address in Podgorica.
TGD is in the municipality of Zeta, where local taxi licences apply. A Podgorica licence alone does not authorise a driver to pick up passengers at the airport. When booking another company, ask it to confirm that it is authorised to collect you at TGD.
Car hire at the airport
If Podgorica is your base for Lake Skadar, the coast or northern Montenegro, collecting a car at TGD connects the airport drive with the rest of your holiday. You use the same vehicle to reach your accommodation and later go on excursions. For a stay mainly in the city, first consider how much you will use it and where you will park.
Details and recommendation for your arrival
Once you have narrowed your choice to one or two options, the full transport details in block 03 help you compare fares, the route to the station and the time you actually need to reach your accommodation. The transport recommendation separately compares a hire car for your whole stay with a taxi directly to your address.
02Returning from Podgorica to the airport
Returning from Podgorica to the airport
When returning for a flight, your transport choice depends more on timing than when arriving in the city. A cheaper ticket can be a good option if the departure leaves enough time, but less appealing if you are relying on the last connection before check-in. This section explains when to reach TGD, how to allow for the walk from the train, and what seasonal terminal restrictions mean if you arrive very early.
When to arrive at TGD
You should reach the terminal at least two hours before your scheduled flight. That deadline applies to arrival at the airport. The drive from Podgorica, parking and returning a hire car all come before it. Your return plan therefore needs to allow for completing those tasks too, especially if returning the vehicle involves an arrangement with the company. Any earlier deadline set by your airline takes priority.
Arriving very early during the busy summer period does not necessarily mean you will spend the whole wait indoors. Access to the terminal may be temporarily limited according to the start of check-in and how full the hall is, so passengers arriving much earlier may wait outside the building. During these restrictions, companions also remain outside unless a passenger needs assistance.
Returning by public transport or car
Returning by train also involves approximately 18 minutes of walking from Aerodrom station to the terminal. A train scheduled to arrive close to your deadline therefore leaves little room for the walk or a possible delay. When there is no suitable public transport departure, a taxi or transfer lets you arrange a departure time from the city. If you are returning a hire car, the handover location and time remain part of your arrangement with the company.
Transport details for the return to the airport
For the return by bus or train, block 03 covers departure locations, fares and the journey from the station to the terminal, so you can plan your arrival at TGD around the complete connection. If the schedule does not suit you, the transport recommendation explains arranging a taxi and the conditions for returning a hire car.
03Bus, train and parking
Bus, train and parking
Available transport to Podgorica
A small difference between bus and train fares can mean a very different arrival. The bus leaves beside the terminal, while the train involves walking and waiting at a small station, despite the short ride to Podgorica itself. This section explains those parts of the journey, fares and locations in both directions, followed by parking for meeting passengers or leaving your car while you travel.
Where the bus and train arrive
The bus and train bring you to the same part of Podgorica - the main bus station and railway station stand next to each other on Trg Golootockih zrtava. The shortest road route from the terminal to the bus station is approximately 11 kilometres. This is a useful starting point for onward travel, but if you have booked accommodation elsewhere in the city, that final part of the journey still lies ahead.

Bus - from the terminal to the main bus station
The bus is the simplest public transport option if you want to head into the city without walking to the railway station. It leaves from the station outside the terminal, and you can buy a ticket on the bus or through BusTicket4.me.
Bus station outside the TGD terminal
A one-way ticket to Podgorica costs 3-5 € per passenger, depending on the operator. For two people, that is 6-10 €.
MS Tours, BTC Zeta and Zejdin connect the airport with Podgorica Main Bus Station. You can check the next departure in the Podgorica Airport - Podgorica timetable.
The shortest road route to the main bus station takes around 15 minutes. Buses serving intermediate stations follow a longer route.
For the return to TGD, you leave from Podgorica Main Bus Station. You can check departures to the terminal in the Podgorica - Podgorica Airport timetable. Information about bus departures is also available on +382 20 620 430.
Train - walking to Aerodrom station
With the train, the ride itself is the shortest part of the journey, while getting to the station takes longer. Aerodrom station is approximately 1.3 kilometres from the terminal, around an 18-minute walk. With a backpack or a small suitcase, that walk may be an acceptable part of a cheap transfer. With large bags or children, the bus outside the terminal is usually more practical.
The ride from Aerodrom station to Podgorica Railway Station takes around seven minutes, and a regular second-class ticket costs 1.20 € per passenger. You can buy it through ZPCG online ticket sales. The low fare is this option’s main advantage, especially for a solo traveller. The overall journey still depends on how long you wait for a departure, so the seven minutes on the train should be considered separately from walking and waiting at the station.
Aerodrom station is on the Bar-Podgorica railway line. To reach the city, you need the Podgorica direction. There are nine daily departures, but they are unevenly spaced - the gap can be half an hour, or almost three hours at certain times of day. The short seven-minute ride is therefore only part of the calculation. If your arrival fits a departure, the train is inexpensive. If you have just missed one, the wait can be much longer than the journey into the city itself.
Aerodrom station is small, with limited space and basic waiting facilities, so it does not offer the comfort of a larger city terminal. Train punctuality is not guaranteed either - local trains on this line do experience delays. The train therefore suits someone travelling light with a flexible schedule, for whom the savings matter more than the wait. If you have a tightly timed appointment in Podgorica, the bus or a taxi booked ahead may be more practical.
On the return journey, the train leaves Podgorica Railway Station. You get off at Aerodrom station and continue to the terminal on foot. That approximately 18-minute walk comes after the ride. For a flight, an earlier departure leaves room for both the walk and a possible delay. Relying on a connection that arrives just before your deadline adds uncertainty.
Parking at Podgorica Airport
The public car park is outside the terminal. For a passenger car, each started hour up to 24 hours costs 1.50 €, while a daily ticket costs 8 € for each started day.
Podgorica Airport public parking
Hourly parking suits a short pickup or drop-off, while a daily ticket lets you leave the car at the airport during your trip. Prices include VAT. A lost parking ticket costs 30 €, so it is worth keeping it until you leave the car park.
04Transport recommendation
Transport recommendation
A taxi or hire car takes you directly from the airport to your chosen address. Below, you can compare a hire car for your whole stay with a taxi for a single journey, including booking details and prices.
Car hire - a vehicle for your whole stay
Renting a car at TGD makes most sense when Podgorica is not your trip’s only destination. After reaching your accommodation, the same vehicle can take you to Lake Skadar, the coast or the north, without finding new transport for every excursion. If you like choosing your own departure time and staying longer somewhere you enjoy, that freedom may matter more than the airport journey itself.
To fit pickup around your flight, agree the meeting point and arrangements for a delayed flight with the company ahead of time. The total hire price, deposit and return terms show what the offer actually includes. Not every booking uses the same pickup or return arrangements. If your accommodation has no parking, the possible cost of public parking forms part of the budget for a stay with a hire car.
Taxi transport from the airport
For a traveller visiting for a few days who simply wants to reach their accommodation, a taxi is simpler to arrange than a hire car. There is no extra journey from a city station or parking to think about during the stay. It is particularly convenient for late arrivals, large suitcases or accommodation in a part of Podgorica away from the bus and railway stations.
The trip from TGD to Podgorica with Zeta Taxi costs 20 € and can be paid in cash or by card. You can arrange a booking on +382 67 995 757, with your flight number, accommodation address and number of passengers. Other companies agree their own fares and payment methods. With a taxi, you arrange pickup for your arrival instead of waiting for the next bus or train. The drive time still depends on traffic.
Tivat Airport as an alternative
05From Tivat to Podgorica
Tivat Airport is around 81 kilometres from Podgorica, approximately a two-hour drive. You can reach the city by hire car or taxi. For the bus, you first need to get to Tivat Bus Station.
From Tivat to Podgorica
Tivat Airport is around 81 kilometres from Podgorica, approximately a two-hour drive. You can reach the city by hire car or taxi. For the bus, you first need to get to Tivat Bus Station.
Landing in Tivat leaves a longer journey to Podgorica, so your onward transport has more impact on the first day of your stay. Here you can compare a direct drive by hire car or taxi with a bus leaving from the city station. Alongside departure and arrival locations, this section explains returning a hire car at TGD and parking for travellers using the Tivat terminal.
From the TIV terminal to Podgorica
Tivat Airport is around 81 kilometres from Podgorica, with a drive of approximately two hours depending on the route and traffic. A direct journey is simpler if you want to continue straight to your accommodation after the flight. The bus is another option, but the journey starts with a taxi to Tivat Bus Station because the intercity bus to Podgorica does not leave from outside the terminal.

Car hire at Tivat Airport
Collecting a hire car at TIV connects the longer drive to Podgorica with later excursions. Instead of making another trip to the bus station, you continue from the terminal to your accommodation at your own pace. The meeting point with the car hire company and pickup arrangements if your flight is delayed are agreed when booking, because they determine how this part of the trip begins.
If your flight at the end of your stay leaves from TGD, returning the car there can save you the drive back to Tivat. This useful option needs to be part of a confirmed booking - the company must accept a return at another airport and state any additional charge. Your rental then follows the start and end of your trip, rather than making you arrange your last day around the pickup location.
Taxi or transfer straight to your accommodation
A taxi or transfer from TIV takes you straight to an address in Podgorica, without changing transport at Tivat Bus Station. For this longer drive, the booking should cover your whole group and luggage, with an agreed total fare and pickup point. If you are travelling with a child, you can request a child seat as part of the same arrangement.
The approximately two-hour drive to Podgorica is a guide, and traffic on the coastal road can change the journey time. Congestion can delay your arrival even when pickup has been arranged ahead. If you continue by another form of transport from Podgorica that day, more time between the two journeys helps keep a small delay from disrupting the rest of your trip.
Bus - first get to the station in Tivat
Travelling by bus from Tivat involves two rides - a taxi from the terminal to Tivat Bus Station, then an intercity bus to Podgorica. This takes more organisation than a direct transfer, but keeps public transport an option. You can buy a bus ticket at the station or through BusTicket4.me.
In Podgorica, you get off at the main bus station rather than at your accommodation. The intercity fare depends on the departure and operator. The taxi from TIV to Tivat station is paid separately. When comparing this with a direct journey, include both costs, the trip to the station and the wait for the bus, rather than just the bus fare.
Parking at Tivat Airport
Parking beside the terminal costs 2 € per started hour or 15 € for a daily ticket, all year round. A lost ticket costs 50 €.
The car park is open 24 hours, and charging starts when you enter. After paying, you have 10 minutes to leave.
Pick up a car at TGD for your stay in Podgorica and onward travel through Montenegro. Choose your dates and pickup and return locations, then compare vehicles, the total price and rental terms.
