One Tivat base for all ten nights
Book the same hotel or apartment in Tivat for the entire stay. Save its full address, the map location of the entrance, and the parking location before the first outing. Every morning begins there and every evening returns there, so your luggage stays in one room throughout the ten day plan.
The order of the ten outings
Begin with Tivat, the Bay of Kotor, and Luštica. Use the middle of the stay for Lake Skadar, the Budva Riviera, Lovćen, and the southern coast. The final outings reach Ostrog, Durmitor, and Biogradska Gora. Each day ends at the same address in Tivat.
The ten day plan
The schedule avoids repeating the same places and brings you back to Tivat after every outing. The final driving time listed for each day is the return trip to your lodging.
Day 1Tivat from Porto Montenegro to PineSpend the first day in Tivat. The waterfront, naval collection, and city parks all fit into one walk from a single parking location.5 to 6 hours with no long drive | Overnight at the same lodging in Tivat
Leave the car at the Arsenal parking lot or at the lot provided by your lodging in central Tivat. Enter Porto Montenegro on foot and follow the marina toward the former Arsenal grounds. The surviving industrial buildings show how the naval shipyard was adapted into a modern marina, while the long piers open a clear view across Tivat Bay. Continue on foot to the Naval Heritage Collection.
The collection traces the history of the Tivat Arsenal, the people who worked there, and the equipment used at the former naval base. Its most distinctive exhibit is the P-821 Heroj submarine. Walking through the narrow interior reveals where the crew worked, slept, and operated the vessel. Check the museum entry time before leaving your lodging, then return to the waterfront path and walk toward Great City Park.
Sailors brought plants from their travels to Great City Park, so a short circuit passes species from several parts of the world. Follow the main paths, then continue to the medieval Buća summer house, now used for museum and gallery displays about Tivat. From the complex, walk back down to the waterfront and continue to Pine.
Finish the first day at Pine. Walk along the waterfront to Kalimanj marina and return the same way, keeping Porto Montenegro, the town center, and the small harbor in one continuous walk. If the car is at Arsenal, follow the waterfront back to it. If you began at your lodging, end the walk at the same Tivat address.
Day 2Kotor, Perast, and PrčanjThe second day covers three distinct places in the Bay of Kotor. Walk through Kotor's medieval core, see Perast's palaces and island church, and end with the waterfront at Prčanj before returning to Tivat.8 to 9 hours | Overnight at the same lodging in Tivat
Leave Tivat in the morning and set the Benovo parking lot in Kotor as your destination. Keep the car outside the walls near the North Gate for the entire Old Town visit. Cross the Škurda River and enter through the North Gate. This starts the walking circuit in a quieter part of the old core and places the Sea Gate at the end of the route.
From the North Gate, walk to St Mary of the River, then continue to the churches of St Luke and St Nicholas. Cross the southern part of the Old Town for St Tryphon's Cathedral before returning through the lanes to the Square of Arms and the Clock Tower. Leave through the Sea Gate, take a short walk along the waterfront, and return to Benovo before driving to Perast.
Allow 20 to 30 minutes for the drive from Kotor to Perast. Leave the car at the entrance parking lot on the Kotor side and walk along the waterfront to St Nicholas Square. The Zmajević, Smekja, and Bujović palaces along the way show the town's former maritime wealth. Take a round trip boat from the central pier to Our Lady of the Rocks and allow about 45 minutes for the island, church, and museum collection. Back in Perast, walk along the western waterfront before returning to the car.
Return through Kotor and allow 40 to 55 minutes to reach central Prčanj. Walk to the large Baroque Church of the Nativity of the Virgin, where a broad staircase meets the waterfront. Continue along a short section of the shore past stone captains' houses, then return to the car and head toward Stoliv and Lepetane.
Follow the western shore through Stoliv and Lepetane to Tivat. The drive completes the circuit around this part of the Bay and ends at the parking lot for the same hotel or apartment. Spend the evening in Tivat, where the next day's outing also begins.
Day 3Luštica from Solila to ŽanjiceBegin at the Tivat Solila reserve, then cross the peninsula for Pržno Bay and Luštica Bay. Finish the sightseeing with the coastal walk between Žanjice and Mirište before returning to Tivat.8 to 9 hours | Overnight at the same lodging in Tivat
The entrance to Tivat Solila is a 15 to 20 minute drive from town. Leave the car by the entrance and follow the path between former salt pans. Shallow water, reeds, and open pools provide resting habitat for migratory birds, while interpretation panels explain the protected wetland. Walk one section of the trail, return to the car, and continue toward Radovići and Pržno Bay.
The parking lot for Plavi Horizonti is about 15 minutes from Solila. The beach lies inside a sheltered bay with a gradual entry into the water and pine trees along its edge. Before swimming, follow the path beside the rocks on one side of the bay to see its enclosed shape. Keep the car in the beach lot throughout the visit, then return through Radovići and drive to Luštica Bay.
The drive from Plavi Horizonti to Luštica Bay takes 15 to 20 minutes. Use the visitor parking and walk down to Marina Village. Follow the harbor, then climb into the upper streets for a view of how the development sits between the steep shoreline and Trašte Bay. Stop for lunch here, return to the car, and begin the longer drive across the peninsula.
Allow 40 to 55 minutes from Luštica Bay to Žanjice through the peninsula's villages. Leave the car in the marked lot above the beach access and walk down to the cove. Žanjice has a pebble shore facing the entrance to the Bay of Kotor, and a short coastal path leads to neighboring Mirište. Walk to Mirište, return to Žanjice, have lunch by the water, and leave time for a swim. Head back to the car for the return to Tivat.
Drive back through the Luštica villages, Radovići, and the junction near Solila. In Tivat, go directly to the parking lot for the same hotel or apartment. The third day ends at the address where it began.
Day 4Rijeka Crnojevića and Lake SkadarOn day four, explore the historic riverside settlement, the broad bend at Rijeka Crnojevića, and Virpazar with Besac Fortress and a boat trip on the lake.9 to 10 hours | Overnight at the same lodging in Tivat
Leave Tivat toward Budva and Cetinje, then continue to Rijeka Crnojevića. Use the marked parking area before the narrow waterfront section. Begin at the stone Danilo Bridge, cross the river, and walk past the row of stone houses along the bank. Set aside about an hour for the village. The bridge, low river channel, and old waterfront buildings show how trade and lake travel shaped the settlement.
The Pavlova Strana viewpoint is about 15 minutes from the village. From the roadside platform, the river makes a broad curve through wetland vegetation on its way toward Lake Skadar. Spend about 20 minutes taking in the entire bend, then continue to Virpazar.
Allow 35 to 50 minutes from Pavlova Strana to Virpazar. Leave the car in the large public parking lot near the main bridge and walk through the small center to the trail for Besac Fortress. The short climb ends on walls overlooking the roofs of Virpazar, the river channels, and the lake. Walk back to the pier and meet the operator booked for your boat trip.
Use a boat trip that begins and ends in Virpazar. The first section follows reed lined channels and water lilies before opening onto the wider lake with views toward Vranjina and the surrounding hills. From the water, you see wetlands that remain hidden from the shore while the car stays in the same lot. After returning to Virpazar, have lunch, walk briefly by the bridge, and leave for Tivat.
Drive from Virpazar toward the coast and continue to Tivat. Put the car back in the lot used by your lodging. Day four ends at the same Tivat address where it started.
Day 5Budva, Miločer, and PetrovacFollow the Budva Riviera from the Old Town walls to Miločer Park and Petrovac. Use one named parking location for each area and continue the sightseeing on foot.9 to 10 hours | Overnight at the same lodging in Tivat
Allow 35 to 50 minutes from Tivat to Budva. Leave the car in TQ Plaza Garage and walk along Mediteranska Street and the promenade to the Old Town. Enter through the gate by the marina, continue to the Citadel, St John's Church, and the square between the churches, then follow the lanes along the southern walls. Exit toward Richard's Head Beach and walk the path toward Mogren for a view back at the fortifications. Return to TQ Plaza by the same route.
Drive 20 to 30 minutes from Budva to Parking Miločer. Enter the park on foot and follow the coastal path past King's Beach toward Queen's Beach. The route passes cypress and olive trees beside the former royal summer residence. View the Sveti Stefan peninsula from the path, then walk back through the park to the same parking lot and continue to Petrovac.
Petrovac is a 20 to 30 minute drive from Miločer. Leave the car at the Autobuska Petrovac parking lot and walk down to the main beach. Follow the full promenade to Kastio Fortress on the rocks at its western end. The terrace overlooks the harbor, the entire bay, and the islets of Katič and Sveta Nedjelja. Return through the older streets and along the waterfront, then follow the same street back to the car.
Drive from Petrovac to Tivat and end at the parking lot for the same hotel or apartment. Allow up to about an hour and a half for the return. Leave the car at your lodging and spend the evening in Tivat.
Day 6Cetinje, Lovćen, and NjegušiUse day six for Montenegro's former royal capital, the Njegoš Mausoleum on Lovćen, and the village where Petar II Petrović Njegoš was born. The route returns to Tivat through the Bay of Kotor.9 to 10 hours | Overnight at the same lodging in Tivat
Drive from Tivat to Tourist Parking by Ćipur on Štampara Makarija Street and leave the car there for the entire walk through central Cetinje. Start beside the remains of Ćipur Monastery and King Nikola's Museum, then cross Court Square toward Biljarda. The parking lot also gives you a direct walking route to Cetinje Monastery and Njegoševa Street.
Walk around Court Square to see King Nikola's former palace and Biljarda, the residence built for Petar II Petrović Njegoš. Continue to Cetinje Monastery, whose church and treasury preserve objects connected with Montenegro's religious and dynastic history. Finish along Njegoševa Street, where former legations and low historic buildings reveal the scale of the old capital. Return to the car and continue toward Lovćen.
Allow 35 to 50 minutes from Cetinje to the parking area below the Njegoš Mausoleum. The final approach has 461 steps, followed by a tunnel through the mountain. Inside, black granite figures stand beneath a gold mosaic ceiling, while Njegoš's marble sarcophagus lies in the lower chamber. Continue through the mausoleum to the circular viewpoint above the stone sea of Lovćen, then descend to the car and drive to Njeguši.
Njeguši is 30 to 40 minutes from the mausoleum. Visit the house where Petar II Petrović Njegoš was born and use its rooms, household objects, and family displays to connect the poet and ruler with the Petrović dynasty. After the visit, stop in the village for cured ham, cheese, and a simple late lunch. Return to the car and take the old road down toward Kotor.
Descend from Njeguši toward Kotor, join the road along the bay, and continue to Tivat. The changing view from the mountain slopes to the old town and waterfront completes the day's route. Park at the same hotel or apartment and spend the night at your established Tivat base.
Day 7Stari Bar, Ulcinj, and Velika PlažaStart early for a full day on Montenegro's southern coast. Explore the fortified settlement of Stari Bar, walk through Ulcinj's Kalaja, and end the sightseeing at Velika Plaža before returning to Tivat.12 to 13 hours | Overnight at the same lodging in Tivat
Allow 1 hour 50 minutes to 2 hours 20 minutes from Tivat and park by the Old Town Gate or on the plateau below the bazaar. Walk through the bazaar to the fortified entrance, then follow the lanes past the remains of the palace, churches, hammam, and Clock Tower. The restored aqueduct explains how water once reached the settlement on the ridge. Return through the bazaar to the car and continue to Ulcinj.
Drive 35 to 50 minutes to Ulcinj and use the Skela or Stari Grad parking lot. Enter the Kalaja through the lower gate and climb to the former Slave Square and Balšić Tower. The upper lanes pass stone houses and terraces overlooking the Adriatic, while the descent opens toward Small Beach and the Pristan waterfront. Return to the parking lot after the walk and continue south to Donji Štoj.
Allow 20 to 30 minutes from central Ulcinj to the Dolcinium parking area at Velika Plaža. Walk from the developed beach access onto the long sandy shore and continue far enough to see how the beach extends toward the Bojana River. Use the remaining time for a swim or an early dinner by the water, then return to the car for the drive to Tivat.
Drive north from Donji Štoj through Ulcinj and Bar, then continue along the coast to Tivat. This is one of the longest return drives in the plan, so the sightseeing ends at Velika Plaža. Park at the same hotel or apartment in Tivat and spend the night there.
Day 8Ostrog, Nikšić, and Lake KrupacDay eight links the Lower and Upper Ostrog Monasteries with central Nikšić and a final walk beside Lake Krupac. Each stop has enough time for an actual visit before the return to Tivat.10 to 11 hours | Overnight at the same lodging in Tivat
Allow 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours 15 minutes from Tivat to Lower Ostrog. Visit the Church of the Holy Trinity, then drive to the parking area below Upper Ostrog and walk the final section. The white monastery complex is built directly into the cliff and holds the relics of St Basil of Ostrog. It remains an active place of pilgrimage, so enter the churches quietly and wear clothing that covers shoulders and knees. Return to the car and continue to Nikšić.
The drive from Ostrog to Nikšić takes 45 to 60 minutes. Park near Freedom Square and begin with its broad, radial layout. Walk to King Nikola's Palace and the Cathedral Church of St Basil of Ostrog, then continue to Bedem Fortress, whose surviving walls stand above the oldest part of town. Return through the center to the car and drive to Lake Krupac.
Lake Krupac is 10 to 15 minutes from central Nikšić. Leave the car at the developed access area and walk along the shore toward the dam. The open water, low hills, and mountains beyond Nikšić make this a useful final pause after the monastery and city walk. Spend about an hour by the lake, then return to the car and start the drive to Tivat.
Drive south from Lake Krupac and continue to Tivat. Go directly to the parking lot for the same hotel or apartment, where the eighth outing ends. Keep the same room and start the Durmitor day from this Tivat address the next morning.
Day 9Žabljak, Black Lake, and Đurđevića Tara BridgeDevote the ninth day to Durmitor. Walk around Black Lake, stop for lunch in Žabljak, and finish at the Đurđevića Tara Bridge before driving back to Tivat.12 to 13 hours | Overnight at the same lodging in Tivat
Leave Tivat early and drive through Nikšić and Šavnik to Žabljak. Set the Durmitor National Park entrance at Ivan Do as the destination and leave the car at the visitor parking area. A paved forest path of about 600 meters leads from the entrance to the lake and the beginning of the circular trail.
Follow the marked trail around Great Lake and Small Lake. The circuit is roughly four kilometers and passes through conifer forest, over roots and short uneven sections, and along several open viewpoints beneath Mount Međed. Although the walking portion can be completed in about an hour, allow more time for the shore, interpretation panels, and views across both basins. Finish at the same lakeside point and walk back to the car.
Drive a few minutes back into Žabljak and park near the town center. Use this stop for lunch and a short walk through Montenegro's main Durmitor base. The low town sits on the Jezerska Plateau and is surrounded by the peaks that shape the national park. Return to the car after lunch and continue to the Tara River.
Allow 30 to 40 minutes from Žabljak to the marked parking area by Đurđevića Tara Bridge. Walk onto the bridge to see its five concrete arches, the Tara River far below, and the wooded canyon extending on both sides. Cross far enough to change the view of the largest arch, then return to the same parking area and begin the drive back to Tivat.
Return through Žabljak, Šavnik, and Nikšić to Tivat. The day ends at the parking lot for the same hotel or apartment used throughout the trip. Spend the ninth night in Tivat and leave from that address for the final outing.
Day 10Morača Monastery, Kolašin, and Biogradska GoraThe final outing combines the medieval Morača Monastery, a walk and lunch in Kolašin, and the forest trail around Biograd Lake. Return to the same Tivat base for the tenth night.12 to 13 hours | Overnight at the same lodging in Tivat
Allow 2 hours 15 minutes to 2 hours 45 minutes from Tivat and leave the car in the parking area beside Morača Monastery. Enter the stone courtyard and visit the Church of the Dormition, known for its medieval frescoes, then see the smaller Church of St Nicholas. The compact complex stands above the Morača River and can be explored without rushing. Wear clothing that covers shoulders and knees, return to the car, and continue to Kolašin.
Kolašin is 35 to 45 minutes from the monastery. Use the enclosed public parking lot on Buda Tomovića Street across from the Municipal Building, then walk to Trg boraca and through the compact town center. This is the day's lunch stop as well as a chance to see the main square and streets of Montenegro's best known mountain town. Return to the car and continue toward Biogradska Gora.
Allow 25 to 35 minutes from Kolašin to the parking area beside Biograd Lake. Follow the easy educational trail around the water for about 3.3 kilometers. The route passes old growth forest, small streams, and wooden footbridges, with repeated views across the lake toward the surrounding mountains. Return to the same lakeside parking area after the full circuit.
Leave Biogradska Gora after the lake walk and drive back to Tivat. Finish at the same hotel or apartment used for all ten nights. The itinerary ends where it began, with no luggage move or change of accommodation before the final evening in Tivat.
Before booking, compare the rental price, deposit rules, luggage space, and exact pickup location.
What to prepare before these day trips
Keep the information and clothing needed for the route together at your Tivat lodging. The following four preparations cover the practical decisions that cannot be made after you have already reached the first stop.
Save the full Tivat address, the entrance location on the map, and the parking location. Use that same destination for the final drive on all ten days.
Arrange the Lake Skadar boat trip before day four and confirm the departure pier in Virpazar. The car remains in the public parking lot during the cruise.
Bring walking shoes and an extra layer for Lovćen, Durmitor, and Biogradska Gora. Carry clothing that covers shoulders and knees for Ostrog and Morača Monastery.
Save the named parking locations before leaving Tivat. The walks in Kotor, Budva, Stari Bar, Ulcinj, and Cetinje all begin outside or beside their historic centers.
Days that require an early start
Start early on the outings to Stari Bar and Ulcinj, Durmitor, and Biogradska Gora because they include the longest return drives. Book the Virpazar boat trip in advance. Check the visiting times for museums, national parks, and religious sites before leaving Tivat.
Parking locations to save on the map
Save Benovo in Kotor, TQ Plaza Garage in Budva, Parking Miločer, Autobuska Petrovac, Tourist Parking by Ćipur in Cetinje, the Old Town Gate lot in Stari Bar, Skela or Stari Grad in Ulcinj, the Ivan Do park entrance, the parking area by Biograd Lake, and the lot below Upper Ostrog. These are the starting points for the walks described in the plan.
