Seven day trips from one Tivat base

Tivat in 7 Days

Keep the same hotel or apartment in Tivat for all seven nights. Spend the first day exploring the city, then make six complete day trips through the Bay of Kotor and into Montenegro's mountains. Each plan names the parking lot, walking sequence, driving time and final return to your Tivat accommodation.

Your luggage stays at one Tivat address throughout the week. Nearby days allow long walks through the Bay's historic towns, while the mountain journeys reserve several hours for the monastery, lake or panoramic circuit you traveled to see. Every day begins at your accommodation and finishes at the same parking lot.

One accommodation for all seven nights

Your Tivat hotel or apartment remains the only base for the week. Every morning begins at that address, each day covers one connected area and every evening ends in the same parking lot. Kotor, Cetinje, Niksic, Kolasin, Pluzine and Zabljak are places to visit rather than overnight stops.

The seven-day sequence

Day one covers Tivat, day two joins Perast with Kotor and day three links Cetinje, Lovcen and Njegusi. Ostrog, Niksic and Krupac fill day four. Moraca, Kolasin and Biogradsko Lake follow on day five, Piva occupies day six and the complete Durmitor Ring closes the week.

Seven days from Tivat

Choose a day and follow its places in order. Each outing leaves from the same Tivat accommodation and returns to its parking lot that evening.

Day 1Tivat from Porto Montenegro to PineStay in Tivat on the first day and explore the city on foot. One parking lot gives you access to Porto Montenegro, the Naval Heritage Collection, the Great City Park, Buća Luković Summer House and the Pine waterfront.5 to 6 hours | The same accommodation in Tivat
1 hour 15 minutesYour accommodation, Arsenal parking lot and Porto Montenegro

Begin at your Tivat accommodation and leave the car at the Arsenal parking lot or at the space assigned to your central hotel or apartment. Walk into Porto Montenegro and follow the waterfront past the marina to the former Arsenal grounds. Restored industrial buildings beside contemporary docks reveal how the naval yard became today's waterfront district. Continue on foot to the Naval Heritage Collection.

1 to 1.5 hoursNaval Heritage Collection and the Hero submarine

The collection explains the Arsenal's effect on Tivat and the working lives of the people employed at the naval base. Inside the P-821 Hero submarine, the command area, torpedo tubes and narrow living quarters show exactly how little room the crew had. Submarine visits have a separate entry arrangement, so confirm the available tour time before starting the walk. Leave the museum on foot for the Great City Park.

40 to 50 minutesGreat City Park

Follow the main path among palms, conifers and specimens brought home by sailors from distant voyages. Walking the park from north to south links the former Arsenal grounds with Tivat's older center and shows the range of plants rather than only the entrance garden. Use the southern exit and proceed to the Buća Luković complex.

45 to 60 minutesBuća Luković Summer House

The walled stone estate contains a tower, residence, chapel and garden once owned by the Buća family of Kotor. Differences between its buildings reveal several phases of construction, while the present museum and gallery introduce Tivat before the modern marina. After seeing the courtyard and tower, walk through the center toward Pine.

1 hour 30 minutesPine, Kalimanj harbor and return to your accommodation

At Pine, look for the training ship Jadran when it is moored along the waterfront, then walk south to the small Kalimanj harbor. The route combines the town square, open views across Tivat Bay and the everyday boats at local docks. Return along the water, collect the car at Arsenal if needed and end the first day at the same Tivat accommodation.

Day 2Perast and Kotor Old TownSpend the second day in two historic Bay towns. Use the morning for Perast and Our Lady of the Rocks, then give Kotor's churches, squares and maritime palaces most of the afternoon.8 to 9 hours | The same accommodation in Tivat
40 to 55 minutes drivingTivat to the eastern entrance parking lot in Perast

Leave your Tivat accommodation, pass Kotor and continue along the Bay to Perast. Park at the entrance on the Kotor side because the historic settlement is narrow and best covered on foot. From the car, follow the waterfront toward St Nicholas Square and leave the vehicle in place until you return from the island.

2 hours 30 minutesPerast and Our Lady of the Rocks

Walk past the Zmajević, Smekja and Bujović palaces to St Nicholas Square. Their stone facades and positions beside the water reflect the wealth and reach of Perast's seafaring families. Take a return boat from the central pier to Our Lady of the Rocks and visit the church, votive paintings and museum collection on the man-made island. Back in Perast, explore the western stretch of the waterfront before returning to the entrance parking lot.

25 to 35 minutes drivingPerast to Benovo parking lot

Drive back along the Bay and use Benovo parking lot as your destination in Kotor. The car remains outside the walls near the Škurda River throughout the Old Town visit. Cross the bridge, enter through the North Gate and begin beside the Church of St Mary of the River.

2.5 to 3 hoursKotor from the North Gate to Arms Square

Walk from St Mary of the River to the churches of St Luke and St Nicholas, then continue across the smaller squares to St Tryphon Cathedral. The Maritime Museum places the surrounding captains' palaces in the wider story of Bay seafaring. Finish at the Clock Tower on Arms Square, leave through the Sea Gate and follow the Škurda back to Benovo.

20 to 35 minutes drivingReturn from Kotor to Tivat

Drive directly from Benovo to Tivat. Park beside the same hotel or apartment where the morning began. The second day closes at your Tivat base after complete visits to both waterfront towns.

Day 3Cetinje, Lovcen and NjegusiFollow the Petrović dynasty from its former royal capital to Njegos's mausoleum and birthplace. The sequence moves from Cetinje's museums to Lovcen and Njegusi before descending toward the Bay and Tivat.9 to 10 hours | The same accommodation in Tivat
1 hour 10 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes drivingTivat to the tourist parking lot by Ćipur

Set out from Tivat for Cetinje and park in the tourist lot by Ćipur on Štampar Makarije Street. The royal quarter is compact enough to cover entirely on foot from here. Start at the remains of the monastery at Ćipur, then cross to Court Square and King Nikola's Palace.

2 hours 15 minutes to 2 hours 45 minutesKing Nikola's Palace, Biljarda and Cetinje Monastery

The furnished rooms and dynastic objects inside King Nikola's Palace describe the final Montenegrin ruler and his family's links with European courts. Across the square, Biljarda presents the more restrained home and state offices of Petar II Petrović Njegos. Continue to the active Cetinje Monastery, then walk along Njegoševa Street past former embassy buildings. Return to the lot by Ćipur through Court Square.

35 to 50 minutes driving and 2 hours visitingLovcen and the Njegos Mausoleum

Drive from Cetinje to the parking lot below the mausoleum on Jezerski Vrh. A tunnel and 461 steps lead to Ivan Meštrović's monument at the top of Lovcen. Inside, examine the black granite figures, the seated sculpture of Njegos and the gold mosaic overhead before approaching the marble sarcophagus. The path behind the building reaches a circular viewpoint, after which the same steps take you back to the car.

30 to 40 minutes driving and 1 hour 30 minutes visitingNjegusi and the birthplace of Petar II Petrović Njegos

Descend from Jezerski Vrh to Njegusi and park near the center of the village. The small stone birthplace displays family rooms and objects from the setting in which Montenegro's poet and ruler grew up. After the house, take a short walk through the settlement and allow time for a lunch of Njegusi prosciutto and cheese. Leave on the old Kotor road for the descent into the Bay.

1 hour 10 minutes to 1 hour 35 minutes drivingReturn from Njegusi to Tivat

Follow the old road down toward Kotor and continue along the Bay to Tivat. Park beside the same accommodation and spend the third night there. The day ends where it started after a connected visit to Cetinje, Lovcen and Njegusi.

Day 4Ostrog Monastery, Niksic and Krupac LakeVisit both sections of Ostrog before walking through central Niksic. A final hour beside Krupac Lake completes the outing before the direct return to Tivat.10 to 11 hours | The same accommodation in Tivat
1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours 15 minutes drivingTivat to Lower Ostrog Monastery

Leave Tivat early and make Lower Ostrog Monastery your first destination. Park beside the complex while you visit Holy Trinity Church, the courtyard and the monastic residences. Return to the car and use the monastery access road to reach the designated parking area below Upper Ostrog.

1 hour 30 minutes to 2 hoursUpper Ostrog Monastery

Walk the final approach from the parking lot to the white monastery buildings set into the cliff. The cave Church of the Presentation holds the relics of St Basil of Ostrog, while the second sanctuary is the Church of the Holy Cross. Step onto the terraces for the view over the Bjelopavlići Plain, then retrace the approach to the car and leave for Niksic.

45 to 60 minutes driving and 2 hours visitingNiksic from Freedom Square to Bedem

Leave the car in a public parking lot beside Freedom Square. Walk along Njegoševa Street to the Cathedral Church of St Basil of Ostrog and King Nikola's Palace, then cross to the remains of Bedem Fortress. The loop connects the planned street pattern, Niksic's main civic monuments and the older fortification above the historic quarter. Return to the same parking lot before driving to Krupac.

10 to 15 minutes driving and 1 hour visitingKrupac Lake

Use the parking lot near the lakeside beach at Krupac and walk along the shore toward the dam. The path opens a broad view across the water to the mountains beyond Niksic. Complete the lakeside walk, return to the car and begin the final drive to Tivat from this parking lot.

1 hour 30 minutes to 2 hours drivingReturn from Krupac to Tivat

Travel back through Niksic and continue by the most direct route to Tivat. Leave the vehicle beside the hotel or apartment used on the previous nights. Day four finishes at the same base, and the next morning begins from that address.

Day 5Moraca Monastery, Kolasin and Biogradsko LakeTravel into central Montenegro for Moraca Monastery, Kolasin and the old-growth forest around Biogradsko Lake. After the monastery and town, spend two and a half hours on the lake trail and return to Tivat once the full circuit is complete.12 to 13 hours | The same accommodation in Tivat
2 hours 15 minutes to 2 hours 45 minutes drivingTivat to Moraca Monastery

Start early in Tivat and drive directly to the parking lot beside Moraca Monastery. Enter the enclosed grounds and approach the large Church of the Dormition first. The morning drive ends at a place where you can spend a full hour examining architecture, frescoes and the monastic courtyard.

45 to 60 minutesMoraca Monastery

Inside the Church of the Dormition, study the old frescoes and the stone proportions of the main sanctuary. Then visit the smaller Church of St Nicholas and walk past the residential buildings around the courtyard. Dress for an active religious site and return to the car after the visit. Continue through the valley toward Kolasin.

35 to 45 minutes driving and 1 hour 15 minutes visitingKolasin and Fighters Square

In Kolasin, use the enclosed parking lot on Buda Tomovića Street opposite the municipal building. Walk to Fighters Square and through several nearby streets to understand the compact center between the Bjelasica and Sinjajevina mountains. Make this the lunch stop, then collect the car and head for Biogradska Gora National Park.

25 to 35 minutes driving and 2 hours 30 minutes visitingBiogradsko Lake and the old-growth forest

Drive to the final parking lot beside Biogradsko Lake and continue on foot. The roughly 3.3-kilometer loop stays close to the shore, crosses wooden footbridges and enters the protected old-growth forest. Clear sections reveal the lake against Bjelasica, while interpretation panels identify the park's habitats and species. Finish the full circuit at the original lake access and walk back to the car.

3 hours to 3 hours 45 minutes drivingReturn from Biogradska Gora to Tivat

Drive back through Kolasin and continue directly to Tivat. At the end of the journey, use the parking space beside the same hotel or apartment. Day five concludes at your Tivat accommodation after the complete walk around Biogradsko Lake.

Day 6Piva Monastery, Piva Lake and PluzineDedicate the sixth day to Piva. Visit the relocated monastery, stop at the viewpoint above Pluzine and spend two hours walking beside the lake before returning to the same accommodation in Tivat.10 to 12 hours | The same accommodation in Tivat
2 hours 30 minutes to 3 hours drivingTivat to Piva Monastery

Leave Tivat for Niksic and continue to Piva Monastery near Goransko. Park beside the complex and begin your exploration of the Piva region here. The entire church was moved stone by stone when Piva Lake was created, preserving the architecture and frescoes from its original location.

45 to 60 minutesPiva Monastery

Enter the Church of the Dormition and examine the dense fresco cycle covering its walls and vaults. The plain stone exterior makes the richly painted interior especially striking. After walking through the courtyard, return to the vehicle and continue toward Pluzine for the first broad view of Piva Lake.

25 to 35 minutes driving and 30 to 40 minutes visitingPiva Lake above Pluzine

Stop at the viewpoint above Pluzine where the long blue arm of Piva Lake appears beneath the road. From here, the town's position between steep slopes and the reservoir is easy to understand. Continue downhill and leave the car in a public parking lot in central Pluzine.

2 to 2.5 hoursPluzine and the Piva Lake shore

Walk from the center to the town beach and small harbor on Piva Lake. The waterfront reveals how the settlement occupies the narrow ground between the water and high valley walls. Use this stop for lunch and a proper walk beside the lake, then return by the same route to the central parking lot.

2 hours 30 minutes to 3 hours drivingReturn from Pluzine to Tivat

Drive from Pluzine through Niksic and continue to Tivat. Park beside your week-long accommodation and spend the sixth night there. The day ends in Tivat after full visits to the monastery, lake viewpoint and Pluzine waterfront.

Day 7Durmitor Ring, Black Lake and TaraThe final day combines the longest drive with a complete mountain circuit. Walk around Black Lake first, drive the entire Durmitor Ring until it returns to Zabljak and then visit Djurdjevica Tara Bridge before heading back to Tivat.14 to 16 hours | The same accommodation in Tivat
2 hours 45 minutes to 3 hours 30 minutes drivingTivat to Zabljak

Leave the same Tivat accommodation very early and travel through Niksic and Savnik to Zabljak. Set the parking lot at the Durmitor National Park entrance in Ivan Do as the first destination. Keep the car there throughout the walk to Black Lake.

2 to 2.5 hoursBlack Lake

Follow the paved forest approach to the shore of Great Lake and join the marked path toward the narrow link with Small Lake. The full circuit measures about four kilometers and alternates between forest shade, wooden crossings and open views toward Medjed. Complete the loop at the original access path, return to the car and drive into Zabljak for the start of the Durmitor Ring.

1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours 15 minutes driving and visitingMala Crna Gora and Susica Canyon

Leave Zabljak on the panoramic circuit toward Mala Crna Gora. At the Susica Canyon viewpoint, step out to see the deep cut between the wooded Durmitor and Piva slopes. The route descends toward the canyon floor before passing Nedajno and continuing to Trsa. This section covers the forested side of the ring before the open plateau.

1 hour to 1 hour 15 minutesTrsa and the Piva plateau

Park in the center of Trsa for the main meal break on the ring. Stone houses and high pastures place the small village between the Piva canyons and Durmitor's rocky summits. Walk through the center, have lunch and then continue through Pišće toward Sedlo Pass.

1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours 15 minutes driving and visitingSedlo Pass and completion of the ring

The drive from Trsa climbs beneath Prutas and Sedlena Greda through the most open part of the panoramic road. Park at Sedlo and use the short marked approach for views across the plateau and nearby summits. Continue downhill to Zabljak, where the full 76-kilometer Durmitor Ring closes.

30 to 40 minutes driving and 45 to 60 minutes visitingDjurdjevica Tara Bridge

From Zabljak, drive to the designated parking lot beside Djurdjevica Tara Bridge. Cross the bridge on foot for views into the canyon on both sides, then use the Zabljak side for a clear profile of all five arches above the river. Return to the same lot and begin the final journey back to Tivat.

3 hours 15 minutes to 4 hours drivingReturn from Tara to Tivat

Travel from the bridge through Zabljak, Savnik and Niksic to Tivat. Leave the car beside the same accommodation that held your luggage all week. The seventh day and the full itinerary end at the Tivat address where the first city walk began.

Mistakes in a seven-day Tivat plan

A useful schedule keeps one overnight base, groups places that belong together and reserves several full hours for a distant destination.

01Moving luggage between day trips

Keep one Tivat address for all seven nights. Return the car to that accommodation every evening and begin the next outing from the same place.

02Allowing too little time for Perast and Kotor

Perast needs a waterfront walk and a return boat to Our Lady of the Rocks. Kotor deserves a complete route through the walled town, so together they occupy most of day two.

03Treating a distant destination as a quick stop

Complete the lake trail in Biogradska Gora, connect the monastery with Pluzine in Piva and close the entire Durmitor Ring. These complete visits give each long journey a clear purpose.

04Ending a day away from the base

The final drive of every day returns to Tivat. An outing ends when the vehicle is parked again beside the same hotel or apartment.

Day 7 on Durmitor

Walk the full circuit around Black Lake, then drive from Zabljak through Mala Crna Gora, Susica Canyon, Trsa and Sedlo. The Durmitor Ring closes in Zabljak before the final visit to Djurdjevica Tara Bridge. The trip ends back at your Tivat accommodation.

Planning the longest mountain days

Biogradska Gora, Piva and Durmitor require several hours of driving in each direction. Give the main lake, monastery or panoramic circuit a substantial visit on those days. Save the Tivat accommodation address and the named destination parking lot before departure.

Questions about seven days in Tivat

Do I stay in Tivat every night?

Yes. Every outing starts at the same hotel or apartment and finishes in its Tivat parking space. All other towns and parks are day-trip destinations.

Which day involves the most driving?

The Durmitor outing takes about 14 to 16 hours. That includes the journey from Tivat, Black Lake, the entire 76-kilometer ring, Djurdjevica Tara Bridge and the drive back.

Does the plan cover the complete Durmitor Ring?

Yes. The circuit leaves Zabljak for Mala Crna Gora, Susica Canyon, Trsa and Sedlo before returning to Zabljak. The bridge visit follows only after the ring is complete.
