Ten-day plan from Ulcinj

Ulcinj in 10 days

Stay at the same Ulcinj address for all ten nights. Each morning begins in town, follows a defined sequence of places and ends back at the same accommodation. Four local days reveal the Ulcinj area in detail, while Cetinje with Lovćen and the Bay of Kotor form the two longest outings.

The itinerary begins with Ulcinj and its surrounding coast, then expands to Bar, Lake Skadar and Shkodër. The final three days reach the Budva Riviera, Lovćen and the Bay of Kotor. Every main destination receives enough time to be worth the drive, and every evening ends back in Ulcinj.

How the one-base plan works

All ten mornings begin in Ulcinj and every outing returns to the same address. The first four days stay within Ulcinj municipality before the plan expands to Bar, Lake Skadar, Shkodër, the Budva Riviera, Lovćen and the Bay of Kotor.

Ten days in order

Every day starts and finishes in Ulcinj. Driving times are approximate and show how much of the day remains for the actual visit.

Day 1Ulcinj Old Town and the town waterfrontThe first day needs no long drive. Leave the car near Mala Plaža and explore the Old Town, the municipal museum, Pristan and the Pine Forest on foot before returning to your Ulcinj accommodation.Full day | Overnight in Ulcinj
45 to 60 minutesMala Plaža and the Old Town entrance

Begin beside Mala Plaža below the Old Town walls. The promenade gives the clearest first view of the fortified quarter standing on rock above the water. Climb towards the Lower Gate and spend time on the first squares and narrow passages rather than heading straight to the restaurants at the top. This short section explains how Pristan, the former harbour and the walls fit together. Continue through the upper lanes towards the museum and the square traditionally associated with Ulcinj's former slave market.

2 to 3 hoursUlcinj Museum, the old market square and Balšić Tower

The museum complex uses archaeological finds and historic buildings to explain the Illyrian, Venetian and Ottoman layers of Ulcinj. After the collection, cross the old market square and continue towards Balšić Tower. Views from the upper lanes reach Mala Plaža and the open Adriatic, but the real value lies in the arrangement of stone houses, small courtyards and passages inside a living fortified town. Finish by walking back down through the same gates towards Pristan, ready for the waterfront part of the day.

2 to 3 hoursPristan and the Pine Forest

Follow the waterfront from Mala Plaža through Pristan and continue into the Pine Forest. This route shows everyday Ulcinj beyond the walls and leaves time for lunch, a swim or a longer coastal walk. Several openings between the pines frame the Old Town from a different angle, so moving the car serves no purpose. Return on foot to the parking area near Mala Plaža in the evening. The first day then ends at the same Ulcinj accommodation where the full itinerary began.

Day 2Port Milena, Long Beach and Ada BojanaAllow about 10 minutes from central Ulcinj to Port Milena. Continue along the southern coast to Long Beach and the Bojana delta, then allow roughly 35 minutes to drive from Ada Bojana back to town.Full day | Overnight in Ulcinj
45 to 60 minutesPort Milena and the kalimera fishing structures

Stop by the bridge at Port Milena, the channel between the Salina area and the sea. The main feature is the line of kalimera, large wooden frames carrying fishing nets used in a traditional local method. Walk a section beside the channel and look at the connection between these structures, the water and the northern end of Long Beach. Port Milena introduces the landscape south of Ulcinj rather than acting as a quick photo stop. Continue from here to one organized access point on Long Beach.

3 to 4 hoursLong Beach

Long Beach stretches from Port Milena towards the Bojana delta. Select one serviced entrance and leave the car in its corresponding lot for the whole stay. That gives enough time for swimming, a substantial walk and lunch without moving between similar stretches of sand. Save the name of the chosen access point before leaving the car, because the beach extends for many kilometres and the entrances are widely separated. Continue towards Ada Bojana after a proper beach stay.

2 to 3 hoursThe Bojana River and Ada Bojana

Spend the final part of the day beside the Bojana River and the sandy edge of Ada Bojana. Stilted wooden houses and fish restaurants create a different setting from the exposed length of Long Beach. Walk through the publicly accessible riverside area, have a proper meal and see where the river landscape approaches the sea. A longer stay beside the river gives enough time to understand this part of the delta. Drive straight back to Ulcinj afterwards and spend the second night at the same address.

Day 3Valdanos, the olive grove and KručeThe drive from Ulcinj to Valdanos takes about 15 to 20 minutes. Kruče is roughly 15 minutes farther along the coast, and the return from Kruče to Ulcinj takes around 25 minutes.Full day | Overnight in Ulcinj
1.5 to 2 hoursThe Valdanos olive grove

The access road to Valdanos passes through one of the defining cultural landscapes of the Ulcinj area. Stop near the approach to the bay and walk part of the route among old olive trees. Dry-stone walls, the spacing of the trunks and the descent towards the sea show how this grove was worked over generations. A measured walk reveals how the trees, paths and stone boundaries shape the cultivated landscape. Continue along the same road to the parking area above Valdanos beach.

2 to 3 hoursValdanos Bay

Walk down from the parking area to the pebble beach enclosed by steep green slopes. Valdanos is smaller and more sheltered than Long Beach, making it a good place to remain in one spot, walk the shore and see where the olive grove reaches the sea. Keep enough time for a swim and a packed lunch. Afterwards, climb back to the car and follow the coastal direction towards Kruče.

1.5 to 2 hoursKruče Bay and the Old Ulcinj coast

Kruče is a small settlement northwest of Ulcinj above the bay of the same name on the Old Ulcinj coast. Walk down from the settlement towards the bay and follow part of the rocky shore. Remains of former rural houses have been found in this area, showing that people used the coast for extended stays long before modern tourism. After a late lunch in the settlement and a walk beside the bay, follow the coastal road back to Ulcinj and finish the third day at your original accommodation.

Day 4Ulcinj Salina, Vladimir and ŠasThis outing links the plain behind Long Beach with the historic inland part of Ulcinj municipality. Allow about 15 minutes to the Salina, 25 minutes onward to Vladimir and around 35 minutes from Šas back to Ulcinj.Full day | Overnight in Ulcinj
2 to 3 hoursUlcinj Salina

Start at the visitor entrance to Ulcinj Salina, a former salt-production landscape now valued for its shallow basins and wetland birds. Keep to the routes and observation points open to visitors. The essential view is the relationship between long embankments, still water and the extensive grid of salt pans rather than one isolated attraction. Binoculars help with birdwatching, but the scale of the site is evident without specialist equipment. Continue inland towards Vladimir after completing the accessible circuit.

1 to 1.5 hoursVladimir

Vladimir serves as the local centre of the Ana Malit area and provides a sensible break before Šas. Stop in the central part of the settlement, take a short walk and have lunch before continuing towards the lake. Low houses, local shops and the everyday pace reveal the inhabited inland municipality behind Ulcinj's visitor coast. From Vladimir, drive for about 15 minutes towards Šas village and the approach to the ruins of medieval Svač.

2 to 3 hoursMedieval Svač and Lake Šas

From Šas village, walk towards the remains of Svač on the hill above Lake Šas. Sections of fortification and several religious buildings survive across the site, while the higher ground opens views over the lake and the Bojana plain. Firm footwear is useful because this is an archaeological landscape rather than a paved town museum. The hilltop position explains why the settlement mattered historically and makes the final local day distinct from the coast. Return to the car and drive directly to Ulcinj for the fourth overnight stay.

Day 5Old Olive Tree, Stari Bar and the Bar waterfrontAllow about 40 minutes from Ulcinj to the Old Olive Tree in Mirovica. The three Bar stops are close to one another, and the drive from central Bar back to Ulcinj takes roughly 45 minutes.Full day | Overnight in Ulcinj
45 to 60 minutesThe Old Olive Tree in Mirovica

Begin at the Old Olive Tree in Mirovica, outside the walled remains of Stari Bar. Leave the car in the dedicated lot beside the enclosure, then visit the protected tree and the small interpretation area focused on Bar's olive-growing tradition. The display explains the place of the olive in local customs and why this particular tree is preserved as a natural monument. Continue for about 10 minutes to the parking areas below the entrance to Stari Bar.

2.5 to 3 hoursStari Bar

Walk from the parking area through the bazaar to the main gate of Stari Bar. Inside the walls, follow the remains of streets, churches, defensive structures and the aqueduct. The site deserves enough time to understand an abandoned fortified town as a whole rather than treating it as a single castle. After leaving the walls, return through the bazaar and have lunch below the fortress. That gives the visit a clear conclusion before the drive down to modern Bar and its waterfront.

2 to 3 hoursKing Nikola's Palace and the Bar promenade

Park near King Nikola's Palace in central Bar and tour the palace complex before continuing on foot towards the seafront promenade. This part of the day makes the contrast between the fortified settlement below Mount Rumija and modern Bar on the coast easy to understand. Include the museum display when it is open, then walk towards the marina and harbour. Return to the same parking area in the early evening and drive directly to Ulcinj for the fifth night.

Day 6Virpazar and Lake SkadarThe drive from Ulcinj to Virpazar takes about 1 hour 20 minutes. Leave the car in the large parking area beside Virpazar railway station, then complete the visit on foot and by boat.Full day | Overnight in Ulcinj
1.5 to 2 hoursBesac Fortress and Virpazar

Climb from the centre of Virpazar to Besac Fortress above the settlement and lake plain. Its walls reveal the position of Virpazar between the Crmnica region, the railway and the waterways leading into Lake Skadar. Descend afterwards to the old bridge and compact centre where boat departures and restaurants are concentrated. Seeing the landscape from above before entering the water gives the day a useful order. Agree the length of the boat trip and the exact return landing before boarding.

2 to 3 hoursA boat circuit on Lake Skadar

Choose a circular trip from Virpazar that returns to the same landing. Two or three hours allow the boat to pass channels edged with reeds and water lilies, reach more open water and reveal a landscape unavailable from the road. This circuit still leaves enough time for lunch and a walk through Virpazar after the cruise. Step ashore at the original landing and walk back into the centre while the car remains beside the railway station.

1.5 to 2 hoursLunch in Virpazar and the return to Ulcinj

Remain in Virpazar for lunch and a short walk beside the Orahovštica after the boat trip. Cross the old bridge once more and spend the final part of the visit around the small square and landing as the waterfront becomes quieter. Walk back to the parking area by the railway station and begin the return. Allow another 1 hour 20 minutes to reach Ulcinj, where the sixth night is spent at the same accommodation as every previous night.

Day 7Shkodër and Rozafa CastleShkodër is the only day in another country, so the plan limits side stops and reserves most of the visit for the city. The drive to Rozafa Castle takes about 1 hour 15 minutes, plus the border formalities.Full day | Overnight in Ulcinj
2 to 2.5 hoursRozafa Castle

After entering Albania, drive directly to Rozafa Castle about three kilometres south of central Shkodër. Leave the car near the final approach and climb to the gate, then explore the inner walls, church remains and small museum. The height opens a broad view over Lake Shkodër, the Buna and Drin rivers and the plain surrounding the city. This makes the fortress the most informative introduction to Shkodër's geography. Return to the vehicle and drive for about 10 minutes to a central city parking area.

3 to 4 hoursMarubi Museum and central Shkodër

Continue on foot from the central parking area along Kole Idromeno Street, the main pedestrian spine of Shkodër. Visit the Marubi National Museum of Photography, where portraits, urban scenes and documentary images provide a direct account of northern Albanian life. Afterwards, walk to Ebu Bekr Mosque, St Stephen's Cathedral and the surrounding squares without returning to the car between sights. Have lunch in the centre, then continue through the pedestrian quarter around Kole Idromeno Street.

1.5 to 2 hoursThe pedestrian quarter and return to Ulcinj

Use the final part of the stay for the streets around Kole Idromeno and the neighbouring pedestrian quarter. Low historic buildings, cafés and nearby places of worship show the everyday city more clearly than another excursion outside Shkodër. Return to the same central parking area and drive straight back towards Ulcinj, allowing again for border control. The day ends at your Ulcinj accommodation rather than with an overnight stay in Albania.

Day 8Petrovac, Sveti Stefan and BudvaThe drive from Ulcinj to Petrovac takes about 1 hour 20 minutes. Continue north along the coast to Sveti Stefan and Budva, then allow roughly 1 hour 40 minutes for the drive from Budva back to Ulcinj.Full day | Overnight in Ulcinj
1.5 to 2 hoursPetrovac

Leave the car in the public parking area beside Petrovac bus station and walk down to the town beach. Follow the promenade to Kastio Fortress, the small stone platform at the end of the waterfront facing the islands of Katič and Sveta Neđelja. Petrovac is compact, so the promenade, fortress and a pause beside the water form a complete visit without driving through local streets. Walk back to the car and continue for approximately 25 minutes towards Sveti Stefan.

1.5 to 2 hoursSveti Stefan and Miločer Park

Stop first at the established viewpoint above Sveti Stefan, then continue to parking near the approach to Miločer. The elevated view shows the complete island and causeway, while the walk through Miločer Park links the former royal residence, Queen's Beach and the coast. This turns Sveti Stefan into a proper visit rather than a photograph taken in a few minutes. Return to the car after the walk and continue for about 20 minutes to Budva.

3 to 4 hoursBudva Old Town

Use a parking area along Mediteranska Street within walking distance of Budva Old Town. Enter through the main gate, follow the compact squares and churches, visit the Citadel and walk beside the walls towards the space above Ričardova Glava beach. Budva is the principal destination of this day, so leave room for the Citadel, dinner and an unhurried circuit of the walls. Return to the same car park afterwards and drive directly to Ulcinj for the eighth overnight stay.

Day 9Cetinje, Lovćen and NjegušiLeave Ulcinj early and allow about two hours to reach Cetinje. The drive to Jezerski Vrh takes around 40 minutes, followed by roughly 35 minutes to Njeguši. The return to Ulcinj takes about 2.5 hours.Full day | Overnight in Ulcinj
2.5 to 3 hoursCetinje Royal Square, Biljarda and the monastery

Park near Studentski Trg and walk to Royal Square, passing King Nikola's Palace. Visit Biljarda in depth to see the former residence of Petar II Petrović Njegoš, then continue to Cetinje Monastery. From the monastery, follow Njegoševa Street through the centre, have lunch and return to the same parking area. The next drive climbs towards Lovćen National Park and Jezerski Vrh.

2 to 2.5 hoursLovćen and the Njegoš Mausoleum

At Jezerski Vrh, leave the car below the stair tunnel and continue on foot to the Njegoš Mausoleum. The ascent has 461 steps. Inside and around the monument, see the stone caryatids, the mosaic-lined chamber, Njegoš's sarcophagus and the viewing platform beyond the mausoleum. Allow enough time to read the display and reach the final platform, since the combination of monument and mountain position is the reason for the trip. Descend to the car and continue towards Njeguši.

1.5 to 2 hoursNjeguši and the return to Ulcinj

Park in the centre of Njeguši and visit the birthplace of Petar II Petrović Njegoš when it is open. Afterwards, have lunch at a local household and try Njeguši cured ham and cheese. The village gives a clear conclusion to the history that began in Cetinje and continued at the mausoleum. After the meal, drive back through Cetinje towards Ulcinj and finish the ninth day at the same accommodation.

Day 10Perast and KotorThis is the longest driving day. Allow about 2.5 hours from Ulcinj to Perast, 25 minutes from Perast to Kotor and approximately 2 hours 15 minutes for the return from Kotor to Ulcinj.Full day | Overnight in Ulcinj
1.5 to 2 hoursPerast

Leave the car at one of the parking areas at the edge of Perast because the historic centre is best covered on foot. Walk along the waterfront to St Nicholas Square and examine the line of stone palaces built by the town's maritime families. Perast is small, but its relationship between churches, palaces and the narrow shore needs more than a quick pass. Continue from the central landing by boat to Our Lady of the Rocks.

60 to 90 minutesOur Lady of the Rocks

Agree a return boat journey from the same Perast landing before boarding. On the island, visit the church and museum, where paintings, votive objects and a maritime collection explain the relationship between Perast and the sea. About an hour on the island allows time for the interior and for views towards St George without making the cruise a separate half-day outing. Return to Perast, collect the car and continue to Benovo parking in Kotor.

3.5 to 4 hoursKotor Old Town

Walk from Benovo parking to the River Gate and enter Kotor Old Town. Cross Arms Square and Flour Square, then visit St Tryphon's Cathedral and the churches of St Luke and St Nicholas. From St Nicholas, follow the stone steps to the Church of Our Lady of Remedy and descend by the same route. After dinner, return to the same parking area and drive directly to Ulcinj, where the tenth day and the full itinerary end.

What weakens a ten-day stay in Ulcinj

The itinerary works because a single base, distinct day plans and proper time at the main places matter more than the number of kilometres driven.

01Changing accommodation during the plan

Moving to Kotor, Budva or Bar changes the purpose of the itinerary and consumes time through check-in, luggage and new parking. Keep all ten nights in Ulcinj.

02Compressing the entire Ulcinj area into one day

The Old Town, Long Beach, Ada Bojana, Valdanos, the Salina and Šas offer different experiences. Four local days give each area enough attention.

03Adding too many stops outside Shkodër

The international day uses Rozafa Castle and one long city visit. This keeps the available time in Shkodër instead of scattering it across roadside pauses.

04Starting the two longest outings late

Cetinje with Lovćen and Perast with Kotor require an early morning. Leaving sooner protects the time reserved for the principal monuments and the return to Ulcinj.

Decisions to settle before departure

  • Accommodation keep the same Ulcinj address for all ten nights
  • Early starts leave early for the Cetinje and Bay of Kotor outings
  • Shkodër carry the documents required to enter Albania and return to Montenegro
  • Boat trips agree the duration and return landing in Virpazar and Perast
  • Parking use one car park throughout each town visit
  • Daily finish the final stop always leads directly back to Ulcinj

Who this itinerary suits

The plan is for travelers who want to know Ulcinj properly and keep one base. The daily outings then extend from the southern coast to Lake Skadar, Shkodër, historic coastal towns, Lovćen and Boka Bay. Every day includes named places, driving times and a definite return.

Questions about ten days in Ulcinj

Do I return to Ulcinj every evening?

Yes. Ulcinj is the only overnight base. Every daily plan ends with its final visit and a direct return to the same accommodation address.

Do I need a car for the complete itinerary?

The first day can be done on foot, but a car is needed for Valdanos, Šas, Bar, Virpazar, Shkodër, the Budva Riviera, Lovćen and the Bay of Kotor.

Which days involve the most driving?

The Cetinje, Lovćen and Njeguši outing and the final Perast and Kotor day are the longest. Both leave Ulcinj early and return to town at the end.
