Why set aside a day for this trip

At Stari Bar, you can walk through an entire former town, from houses and churches to the bathhouse, water supply and fortifications on top of the rock. This offers more than a visit to a single monument: it reveals how different communities built and used the same space over the centuries. The area’s olive-growing heritage and a meal in the inhabited settlement below the walls connect that past with the Bar area today. The drive from Budva and back takes approximately two hours and 40 minutes, leaving most of the day for exploring and spending time at the destination.

Route, visits and breaks

The estimated duration includes driving, visits, approaches, lunch and an allowance for delays. Heavy summer congestion can extend the day.

01

Leaving Budva and visiting the Old Olive Tree

1 h 15 min driving · 25 min visit · 10 min for parking and the approach

The Old Olive Tree at Mirovica in the landscaped grounds of the natural monument
The Old Olive Tree, the first visit at Mirovica

Set out from Budva in the morning and open the prepared route for navigation. The coastal road passes Petrovac and runs through Sutomore, then continues through Bar to Mirovica. The prepared waypoints keep you on the main road along the coast, avoiding a detour through Virpazar and the Sozina tunnel. Allow about an hour and 15 minutes for the drive. Summer congestion can make it longer.

The first leg ends at the parking area beside the Old Olive Tree complex. A further ten minutes is allowed for parking and the short walk to the tree. The visit takes about 25 minutes, enough to explore the landscaped area around the olive tree and look at its broad, irregular trunk. The Old Olive Tree complex is open daily from 08:00 to 18:00.

02

Continuing to Stari Bar and exploring inside the walls

10 min driving · 2 h 15 min visit · 15 min for parking and the approach

The Church of St. Veneranda among the stone buildings of Stari Bar
The archaeological town below Rumija

The parking area below Stari Bar is approximately two kilometers from Mirovica. Allow about ten minutes for the drive and another 15 minutes for parking and the approach. Navigation takes you to the parking area. From there, continue on foot through the market street to the gate. Leave the car in the same parking area for lunch afterward.

Set aside about two hours and 15 minutes for the archaeological site. From the gate, explore the restored buildings and remains of former houses, then continue to the ruins of Saint George’s Cathedral and the citadel. The upper parts of the site overlook the surrounding slopes and the Bar plain. Include the clock tower and the view toward the aqueduct on the northern side. The time allowed includes the climbs and the walk back through the site.

Cobblestones, changes in level and steps make this visit more demanding than a walk along level city streets. The Bar Cultural Center currently lists visiting hours of 08:00 to 20:00.

Public parking spaces in Stari Bar belong to Zone I, with a published rate of 50 cents for each hour or part of an hour. The operator separately lists gated parking at €1 per hour. The parking area below the town appears on the operator’s list of public parking lots.

03

The market street and lunch at Kaldrma

20 min walk along the market street · 1 h 15 min for lunch and a rest

The market street, where you stay for lunch after the visit

After leaving the walled town, walk down Stari Bar’s market street. Allow about 20 minutes to walk along the street and browse the shops before sitting down for lunch. You explore the settlement below the walls on foot, so this break does not require another parking stop.

Kaldrma Restaurant is on this street, on the site of the former Stari Bar market square. Here you can try Stari Bar’s cuisine, which uses olive oil, seasonal vegetables and meat. About an hour and 15 minutes is allowed for lunch and a rest.

04

Returning to Budva

1 h 15 min driving

Walk back to the parking area and open the return leg through Sutomore and past Petrovac. Allow about an hour and 15 minutes to drive to Budva outside periods of heavy summer congestion. The return leg follows the coastal road, without the Sozina tunnel.

The whole trip, including visits, lunch, approaches and an allowance for delays, takes about eight hours. This includes around 40 minutes beyond the planned stages. At the height of the season, traffic on the main coastal road can extend the day beyond this estimate.

Trip highlights

01

The Old Olive Tree at Mirovica

The Old Olive Tree grows at Mirovica, near the road from Bar toward Ulcinj. Research carried out in 2014 and 2015 estimated its age at approximately 2,240 years at the time of analysis.

As you look around, the broad base and branching shape of the trunk draw attention. Over time, the tree has suffered fires and damage. A large part of it fell in 2004. The condition of the soil also matters for its preservation: drainage was installed after problems with high groundwater, and the operator recorded new vegetative growth in spring 2024.

Stories about reconciling feuding families are associated with the olive tree. They explain the special respect for this place and the name Mirovica, but belong to oral tradition. The tree is protected as a natural monument. Stone posts around the trunk separate the visitor area from the tree and its roots.

02

Stari Bar, the walled town below Rumija

Stari Bar stands on a rocky rise below Rumija, a few kilometers from the coast. An area of about 4.5 hectares contains the remains of residential buildings, religious buildings, palaces and town fortifications. Their different forms bear witness to centuries of life under Byzantine, medieval, Venetian and Ottoman rule.

The ruined houses and lines of the streets reveal the layout of everyday life, while palaces and churches show its administrative and religious centers. At Saint George’s Cathedral, you see the remains. The restored Church of Saint Veneranda retains its recognizable stone facade and round window.

The hammam and clock tower reflect the Ottoman period. The bathhouse was part of town life, and the clock tower remains a recognizable vertical landmark among the lower ruins. The aqueduct on the northern side had a different, equally important role: it brought water from a distant source. Its stone arches show how the elevated town solved the problem of supplying water.

The citadel rises above the other buildings and offers views toward the Bar plain and the surrounding mountains. The elevation and cliffs around the town were part of its natural defenses.

The town inside the walls lost its permanent inhabitants toward the end of the 19th century. The earthquake of 1979 caused further damage, followed by research, conservation and restoration of individual buildings. Life in Stari Bar continues below the gate, in the settlement you pass through on arrival and return to for lunch.

03

Stari Bar’s market street and local cuisine

Stari Bar’s market street is a cobbled street below the walls, with shops, souvenir stores and restaurants. The former market square in this settlement brought together sellers of meat, fish, vegetables, cheese and spices. Your visit to the archaeological town therefore continues through a place that also played an important role when people lived within the walls.

Dino Becovic opened the family restaurant Kaldrma on the site of the old market square in 2004. His family had a shop on the same street as far back as the middle of the 19th century, so the choice of location also has a family history. Their cooking brings together recipes from the Orthodox, Catholic and Muslim households of Stari Bar. Olive oil and seasonal vegetables, including eggplant, connect the meal with the area you have just explored.

Questions before a trip to Stari Bar

Is Stari Bar the same as central Bar?

Stari Bar is a settlement and archaeological town below Rumija, a few kilometers from the coast. The modern center of Bar, the port and the waterfront promenade are elsewhere. For this visit, navigation should therefore end at the parking area below Stari Bar, rather than the waterfront or the center of the modern town.

Where can I park, and can I drive through Stari Bar?

The prepared leg ends at the parking area below the archaeological site. Continue on foot to the gate, through the market street and inside the walls, over cobblestones and steps. The public parking area belongs to Zone I. Gated parking has a separate rate. Leave the car in the same parking area during lunch below the walls, so you do not need to find another space for the second break.

Can this trip be done in half a day?

About eight hours is allowed for these visits, approaches, lunch and the return drive. A half-day trip would mean a shorter visit to the site or leaving out lunch, since about two hours and 15 minutes is allowed for the archaeological town alone. At the height of the season, congestion on the main coastal road can make both drives longer.
