Day trip by car from Petrovac

Lake Skadar by car from Petrovac: Virpazar, Godinje and Murići

At Murići, Lake Skadar opens out toward a chain of rocky islands, while the road above the water winds through lakeside villages. You can first take in the lake from the panoramic road, then follow the descent all the way to the beach. Virpazar is about 25 km from Petrovac. Beyond it, a slower journey along the shore leaves time for a fortress, stone village houses and a long break beside the water.

Why set aside a day for this trip

The lake is less than an hour from Petrovac, leaving the rest of the day for a place quite different from the coastal promenades. From the ramparts and the panoramic road, you look out over a shore dotted with islands. Among the stone houses and old landing places, you encounter Crmnica’s history of winemaking and lake transport. A car lets you continue beyond those settlements to Murići, with time for a longer stay beside the water.

Route, visits and breaks

The duration includes visits, lunch, all walking approaches, the return journey and an allowance for slower driving.

01

From Petrovac to a walk around Virpazar

45 min driving · 50 min for parking and the walk

Virpazar with its stone bridge, houses and boats beside the water
Virpazar’s bridges and landing place

Leave in the morning through the Sozina tunnel toward Virpazar and open the prepared route for navigation. On a phone, use the three consecutive navigation parts in the map section. They retain every destination and the return through Sozina.

The parking lot in the prepared navigation is on the approach to the center, before the main bridge. Explore the bridge, square and landing place on foot. Walk past the moored wooden boats to the stone bridge and look at the meeting of waterways around which the settlement grew. Allow about 40 minutes for this walk. The car stays here while you visit Besac and have lunch.

02

Walk up to Besac Fortress and the lake view

15 min walking · 40 min at the fortress

The entrance to Besac Fortress

From the center of Virpazar, continue uphill on foot to Besac Fortress. Allow about 15 minutes for the climb. The complex has steps and several levels.

During the visit, explore the towers, ramparts and former barracks, then make your way to the view over Virpazar and the lake. From this height, you can see why the position was useful for watching the approach from the lake. A restaurant now occupies part of the restored complex.

03

Lunch in Virpazar before the lakeside drive

1 h 30 min for the descent, lunch and a rest

Walk back down from Besac to the town in about 15 minutes and stop at Pelikan restaurant, in the center of Virpazar. Its cooking draws on the lake region, while the traditional interior, including its hearth room, gives the meal a different setting from Petrovac’s seaside terraces.

Allow about an hour and 15 minutes for lunch and a rest. Take your longer meal break here before leaving for Godinje and Murići, so your later time on the shore does not depend on a remote restaurant being open. Then return to the car.

04

Godinje and a walk through the stone village

15 min driving · 1 h for the village and access

Stone houses in Godinje and the lakeshore below the village
Godinje’s stone houses on the hillside

Godinje is about three kilometers from Virpazar along the local road. Leave the car on the approach to the old part of the village, outside the narrow passages between the houses. Allow about an hour for parking, the walk and the return to the car.

Follow the public village paths past the closely grouped stone houses. Look at their vaults and terraces, and the way the cellar and living quarters fit together. This is an exterior visit: the interconnected private cellars are not public passageways through the village. A winery visit and tasting would need a separate arrangement with the host and are not included in this route.

05

The panoramic road to Murići viewpoint

45 min driving · 25 min for the viewpoint and parking

After Godinje, follow the lakeside road toward Murići viewpoint. The viewpoint is on the panoramic road above the shore, before the descent to the beach. About 45 minutes is allowed for this drive, longer than the basic navigation estimate because of the bends, narrow stretches and places where vehicles must pass each other.

Spend about 20 minutes at the viewpoint. From here, you can make out the lake islands known locally as gorice. The elevated view shows how they lie along the shore before you descend to the water. The onward drive to the beach follows a separate, steeper local access road.

06

Down to Murići beach and time by the lake

15 min driving · 1 h 40 min for the approach and shore

The beach approach is about three and a half kilometers from the viewpoint. Allow about 15 minutes to drive down, with another ten minutes for parking and walking to the shore.

An hour and a half is set aside for the lakeshore itself. Walk along the sand-and-pebble beach and look at the rocky outcrops extending into the lake. In the warmer months, you can also take a break for a swim here.

07

Back to Petrovac through Virpazar and Sozina

1 h 40 min driving

From the Murići shore, return to the panoramic road and follow the prepared third navigation part through Virpazar and Sozina to Petrovac. Allow about 55 minutes to drive to Virpazar, followed by about 45 minutes to Petrovac.

The overall trip duration includes a 45-minute allowance for traffic, parking and slower progress along the lakeside road.

Trip highlights

01

Virpazar, its bridges and the former lake port

Virpazar was an important trading and transport center for Crmnica, at the meeting of routes from the villages to the lake. The settlement around its bridges is best explored beside the water: from the crossings, you can see the houses, landing place and waterways surrounding them.

The town was one of Lake Skadar’s main ports. Boats connected the lakeside settlements before roads and the railway took over much of the transport. Today’s wooden boats and tourist landing places continue that connection with lake travel, though their role has changed.

02

Besac, its towers and control of the lake approach

The Ottoman authorities built Besac in the late 15th century, after the fall of Lower Zeta. Its elevated position above Virpazar allowed control over traffic on this part of Lake Skadar. Between the two world wars, the fortress served as a gendarmerie station, and during the Italian occupation, it was also used as a prison.

The outer ramparts follow the shape of the hill, enclosing a roughly triangular area. Inside are the main fortification and former barracks. The rectangular core has two round towers, a vaulted ground floor and cannon openings on the upper level. Conservation and restoration work took place in 2013 and 2016.

03

Godinje, stone vaults and cellars beneath the houses

Godinje is a preserved rural settlement in Crmnica, a region with a long tradition of grape growing. The houses stand close together, making parts of the old village resemble a fortified settlement. Thick stone walls and loopholes show that homes here also had to provide protection.

Its most distinctive features are the stone vaults, known locally as voltovi, and the cellars on the lower levels of the houses. Living quarters and terraces sit above them. This arrangement connects the home with the cellar where the household stored wine and other produce.

Mills and guvna, or threshing floors once used to separate grain, also survive within the village. Some houses have been adapted for modern living while retaining the old settlement’s form.

04

Murići, the lake islands and the shore below the panoramic road

Murići lies on Lake Skadar’s southwestern shore, in Krajina. The beach is approximately 560 meters long, facing islands beneath hillsides that descend to the water. Sand, small stones and rocky stretches alternate along the shore that you first see from the panoramic road above.

Lake Skadar’s low islands are known as gorice. Along the Krajina shore are the island monasteries of Starčevo, Beška and Moračnik, founded during the Balšić era. These monasteries belong to the lake’s late medieval heritage, when this area was one of the centers of Zeta. Their churches are reached by boat from the lake.

Seasonal changes in water level affect the width of the beach and the appearance of the Murići shoreline.

Questions before you go

Can I visit Lake Skadar by car without taking a cruise?

Yes. The land route links Virpazar, Besac and Godinje with the viewpoint and Murići shore. The island monasteries are outside this visit because they have no road access.

Do I need a 4x4 to reach Murići?

The planned route follows a paved local road and does not require off-road driving. For an ordinary car, the narrow sections, bends and steep final descent matter more than four-wheel drive. The plan therefore allows longer driving times than the basic navigation estimate.

Can I add Pavlova strana to this trip?

Pavlova strana is near Rijeka Crnojevića, on a different branch of the lake from Virpazar. It is not on the road between Godinje and Murići. Set aside another trip for it and Rijeka Crnojevića, preserving time here for Besac, the village and the lakeshore.
