How to use this one-base itinerary
Keep the same Podgorica accommodation for all seven nights, removing the need to pack and check in elsewhere. Every outing covers one connected region and includes the drive back. Kotor Bay and Durmitor need early departures, while the closer trips allow a slower breakfast and a longer lunch.
The week at a glance
Start with Podgorica and Lake Skadar, followed by Cetinje, Lovćen, and Njeguši. The next days cover Kotor and Perast, the Budva Riviera, and Ostrog with Nikšić. Finish with a long Durmitor and Tara excursion, then a final day at Morača Monastery, Biogradsko Lake, and Kolašin.
The seven day itinerary
Open each day for specific places to visit, approximate drive and visit times, the purpose of every stop, and the return journey to your Podgorica accommodation.
Day 1Podgorica, Virpazar, and Lake SkadarBegin with the oldest part of Podgorica, then drive to Virpazar for an introduction to Lake Skadar and time on the water. The trip between Podgorica and Virpazar takes about 35 minutes each way, leaving enough time for both the city and the lake.6 to 7 hours | Overnight in Podgorica
Start at the Clock Tower and walk through Stara Varoš toward the confluence of the Ribnica and Morača rivers. At Sastavci, see the old stone bridge, the river steps, and the remains of Ribnica Fortress. This compact walk connects the Ottoman quarter with the river crossing around which early Podgorica developed. Return to your car and leave for Virpazar.
Walk around Virpazar's stone bridge and small center before visiting the national park information center. Its displays introduce the lake's wetland habitats, birdlife, and the cultural history of shoreline communities, giving context to the boat journey that follows. Have lunch in the village before boarding so the return to Podgorica remains comfortable.
Book a licensed operator in Virpazar for a return cruise through reed-lined channels and part of the open lake. Two hours on the water lets you experience both landscapes and watch wetland birds without turning the trip into an all-day cruise. Back at the same dock, collect your car and drive to the accommodation where you began the day in Podgorica.
Day 2Cetinje, Lovćen, and NjegušiThis day links Montenegro's former royal capital with the Njegoš Mausoleum and the village where Njegoš was born. Drive about 40 minutes from Podgorica to Cetinje, continue across Lovćen to Njeguši, and return to Podgorica after the final stop.9 to 10 hours | Overnight in Podgorica
Begin in Court Square, where King Nikola's former palace stands near Biljarda, the residence built for Petar II Petrović Njegoš. Continue on foot to Cetinje Monastery and the Vlaška Church. These buildings sit close together, allowing you to understand the political, religious, and cultural role of the old capital rather than merely walking its main street. Leave Cetinje for Lovćen.
The drive from Cetinje to Jezerski Vrh takes roughly 40 minutes. A tunnel and 461 stone steps lead from the parking area to the mausoleum. Visit the entrance hall with its stone caryatids, the chapel containing the Njegoš sculpture, and the viewpoint behind the building. Allow time for the descent as well as the climb before continuing to Njeguši.
Visit the house where Petar II Petrović Njegoš was born, then spend about an hour over lunch or a tasting of the village's smoked ham and cheese. The stop connects the story of Lovćen with a food tradition still associated with Njeguši. The drive back to Podgorica takes about one hour and 20 minutes and ends at the same accommodation.
Day 3Kotor and PerastSpend the third day in Kotor and Perast, two compact towns with different chapters of Boka's history. Kotor is about one hour and 30 minutes from Podgorica, and the evening return from Perast takes roughly one hour and 40 minutes.10 to 11 hours | Overnight in Podgorica
Enter through the Sea Gate into Arms Square, then walk past the Clock Tower and Flour Square to Saint Tryphon Cathedral and the churches of Saint Luke and Saint Nicholas. This route ties together the main civic and religious spaces inside the walls. For the climb toward San Giovanni Fortress, add at least 90 minutes and begin before lunch. The waterfront drive from Kotor to Perast takes about 20 minutes.
Follow Perast's waterfront past Saint Nicholas Church and the palaces of former maritime families. Take a return boat from the quay to Our Lady of the Rocks, where the church and museum explain the making of the artificial island, seafaring traditions, and votive gifts. After returning to Perast, drive directly to Podgorica and finish the day at your original accommodation.
Day 4Budva, Sveti Stefan, and PetrovacThe fourth trip follows the Budva Riviera through three places with distinct character. Allow about one hour and 10 minutes to reach Budva, then make two short coastal drives to Sveti Stefan and Petrovac before returning to Podgorica.9 to 10 hours | Overnight in Podgorica
Inside the walls, follow the narrow lanes to the Citadel, the Church of Saint John, Santa Maria in Punta, and the small adjoining squares. From the ramparts beside the Citadel, look across the marina and the bay toward Sveti Nikola Island. Finish with a walk along the harbor, then return to the car for the drive to Sveti Stefan.
Stop first at the viewpoint above Sveti Stefan to see the whole islet and the two beaches connecting it to the mainland. Continue down to the coast and walk through Miločer Park, passing cypress trees and the former royal summer residence. The viewpoint and park form one complete visit before the drive south to Petrovac.
Walk the length of Petrovac's bay to Kastio, the surviving section of a Venetian fort above the present harbor. Its terrace looks over the bay and the offshore islets of Katič and Sveta Neđelja. Return along the promenade for a drink or early dinner, then drive about an hour to Podgorica and end the fourth day at the same address.
Day 5Ostrog, Nikšić, and Krupac LakeCombine Ostrog Monastery with central Nikšić and a walk at Krupac Lake. Ostrog is about an hour from Podgorica, and the drive home from Nikšić takes approximately another hour.8 to 9 hours | Overnight in Podgorica
Start at Lower Ostrog, which contains Holy Trinity Church and the monastery residences, then continue to Upper Ostrog built into the cliff. The upper complex has two small cave churches and the relics of Saint Basil of Ostrog, making it a major pilgrimage site for visitors from several faiths. Wear clothing that covers the shoulders and knees, and continue toward Nikšić after the visit.
Begin in Freedom Square, walk to the Cathedral Church of Saint Basil of Ostrog, and continue to Bedem Fortress. Together, they show the planned city center, its monumental church, and the remains of an older fortified settlement. After lunch, drive to Krupac Lake for about an hour by the water, then return directly to the same accommodation in Podgorica.
Day 6Žabljak, Black Lake, the Durmitor Ring, and TaraThe longest excursion begins with an early departure from Podgorica. Allow about two hours and 30 minutes to reach Žabljak, then connect Black Lake, the Durmitor Ring, and Đurđevića Tara Bridge before driving back to your Podgorica base.13 to 14 hours | Overnight in Podgorica
Walk the loop around the Big and Small sections of Black Lake rather than stopping at the first stretch of shore. The approximately 3.6-kilometer trail passes through conifer forest and takes at least an hour without extended breaks. Completing it reveals both bodies of water and changing views toward the Durmitor peaks. Collect food for the next part of the day before beginning the panoramic ring.
Follow the Durmitor Ring to Sedlo, a viewpoint toward Prutaš, and the village of Trsa. The three stops reveal high passes, pastures, traditional grazing settlements, and permanent mountain villages, giving the drive a purpose beyond scenery. After completing the ring, allow about 30 minutes to reach Đurđevića Tara Bridge and walk across its central section for a view into the canyon. The return to Podgorica takes around two hours and 30 minutes and finishes at the same accommodation.
Day 7Morača Monastery, Biogradsko Lake, and KolašinThe final day follows one northern corridor from Morača Monastery to Biogradsko Lake and Kolašin. After a walk and lunch in Kolašin, return to Podgorica and complete the full week at the accommodation where it began.9 to 10 hours | Overnight in Podgorica
The drive from Podgorica to Morača Monastery takes about an hour. Visit the Church of the Dormition, the smaller Church of Saint Nicholas, the residential buildings, and the enclosed courtyard above the river. Frescoes and icons inside the complex represent several periods of the monastery's artistic and religious life. Continue north after the visit.
Allow approximately an hour to drive from Morača Monastery to Biogradsko Lake. The educational loop is about 3.3 kilometers long and passes through protected old-growth forest, with signs describing plants and wildlife. Walking the circuit takes around 40 minutes before longer stops along the shore. Continue to Kolašin when the lake visit is complete.
Start at Fighters' Square, make a short circuit of Kolašin's center, and choose a restaurant serving the food of northern Montenegro. About an hour is enough for lunch and a walk after the lake trail. The drive from Kolašin to Podgorica takes roughly one hour and 15 minutes. Return to the same accommodation to complete both the seventh day and the itinerary.
Before booking, compare the rental price, deposit rules, luggage space, and exact pickup location.
Planning mistakes on day trips from Podgorica
Each day works best when it remains focused on one region and includes enough time for the visit and the drive back to Podgorica.
The itinerary is designed around one base. Keeping the same Podgorica address gives every excursion a known starting point and a clear finish.
The northern excursion includes about five hours of return driving. An early departure protects the time needed for Black Lake, the Durmitor Ring, and the Tara Bridge.
Kotor, Lovćen, and Durmitor need time for squares, museums, paths, and viewpoints. Use the stated visit times to understand the places beyond a single photograph.
Each daily duration includes the return to Podgorica. Complete the final visit on schedule so you can reach the same accommodation that evening.
Practical preparation
Save your Podgorica accommodation address as the start and finish for every day. Arrange the Virpazar boat trip with a licensed operator, dress with covered shoulders and knees for Ostrog, and bring suitable shoes for the two lake trails. Fill the fuel tank and carry food before the early departure for Žabljak.
Who this itinerary suits
Choose this plan if you want to stay in Podgorica for a week while exploring a different part of Montenegro each day. Kotor Bay and Durmitor are long excursions, while Lake Skadar, Ostrog, and the Budva Riviera provide more time for meals and walking.
