Ten days of round trips from Podgorica

Podgorica in 10 days

Keep the same Podgorica accommodation for all ten nights. Each morning begins with a drive to one connected area, and every evening ends at the address where the day started. The schedule covers Montenegro's celebrated coast and mountains while reserving two substantial days for Podgorica and the historic sites close to the city.

This itinerary reaches the coast and mountains without treating Podgorica as a place to sleep and nothing more. Longer drives to the Bay of Kotor, Ulcinj and Durmitor are separated by city days around Podgorica, Doclea and Medun. Within each day, the stops follow a sensible geographic order and bring you back to the same accommodation without needless doubling back.

How to use this ten-day itinerary

Podgorica remains your only overnight base. Shorter city outings separate the long drives to the coast and mountains, so luggage stays at one address and the return journey is already included in each day's timing. The earliest departures are required for Durmitor, Kotor and Ulcinj.

The ten days in order

Begin with Podgorica and Lake Skadar, then visit Cetinje and Lovćen, Kotor and Perast, and the Budva Riviera. The route continues to Stari Bar and Ulcinj, Ostrog and Nikšić, Doclea and Medun, followed by two northern days covering Durmitor, Tara, Morača, Biogradsko Lake and Kolašin.

The complete daily itinerary

Expand each day for the precise stop order, what to see, suggested visit length, driving time and return to Podgorica.

Day 1Historic and modern PodgoricaBegin with the Ottoman-era quarter and the modern landmarks of Podgorica. Most of the sightseeing is on foot, with the car used only to connect the two walking circuits and return to your accommodation.6 to 7 hours | Overnight in Podgorica
2.5 to 3 hoursStara Varoš, the Clock Tower and Sastavci

Start beneath the Clock Tower and walk through Stara Varoš to Osmanagić Mosque and the remains of the former hammam. Continue downhill to Sastavci, where the Ribnica meets the Morača, to see the stone bridge and the ruins of Ribnica Fortress. This compact route explains how old Podgorica developed beside two rivers. Have lunch in Stara Varoš before crossing to the newer part of the capital.

3 to 3.5 hoursCathedral, Millennium Bridge and Gorica Hill

Visit the Cathedral of the Resurrection of Christ and look closely at its painted interior beneath the monumental dome. Walk from the cathedral toward the Morača and Millennium Bridge, then drive to the foot of Gorica Hill. The path from St George's Church to the Monument to the Partisan Fighter passes through woodland above the center. Descend to the car, return to your Podgorica accommodation and finish the first day there.

Day 2Virpazar, Lake Skadar and Rijeka CrnojevićaThe second day combines the reed-lined waters near Virpazar with the river landscape around Rijeka Crnojevića. Virpazar is about 35 minutes from Podgorica, and the afternoon drive continues through the lake hinterland.8 to 9 hours | Overnight in Podgorica
3.5 to 4 hoursVirpazar and a Lake Skadar boat trip

Walk from Virpazar's stone bridge through the small center and visit the national park visitor center. Then take a return boat trip with a licensed operator through reed channels and onto the open lake. About two hours on the water allows you to experience both habitats rather than seeing the shore alone. Eat lunch in Virpazar after docking, then set out for Rijeka Crnojevića.

2.5 to 3 hoursRijeka Crnojevića and Pavlova Strana

Cross the arched Danilo Bridge and follow the waterfront of the former trading port. See the house of Saint Peter of Cetinje and learn about the Crnojević printing house that operated at nearby Obod. After the walk, drive up to Pavlova Strana for the broad view over the river bend toward Lake Skadar. From the viewpoint, return directly to the same place in Podgorica for the night.

Day 3Cetinje, Lovćen and NjegušiDay three follows Montenegro's royal and cultural history from Cetinje to Lovćen and Njeguši. Cetinje is roughly 40 minutes from Podgorica, and the return drive begins in Njeguši after the final visit.9 to 10 hours | Overnight in Podgorica
2 to 2.5 hoursCourt Square and historic Cetinje

Begin on Court Square beside the former palace of King Nikola and the Billiard House, once the residence of Petar II Petrović Njegoš. Continue on foot to Cetinje Monastery and the Vlaška Church, all within the compact historic center. Add one museum interior to the circuit for a closer look at the old royal capital, then drive toward Lovćen.

2 to 2.5 hoursNjegoš Mausoleum on Jezerski Vrh

Allow about 40 minutes for the drive from Cetinje to Jezerski Vrh. A tunnel and 461 steps lead from the parking area to the mausoleum. Inside, see the stone caryatids in the vestibule and Njegoš's sculpture in the chapel, then walk to the viewpoint behind the building. Return down the same staircase and continue to Njeguši.

2 to 2.5 hoursNjeguši and the drive back to Podgorica

Visit the house where Njegoš was born, then allow about an hour for lunch or a tasting of Njeguši prosciutto and cheese. The village completes the story begun in Cetinje and on Lovćen by showing the family origins of Montenegro's ruler and poet. The journey from Njeguši to Podgorica takes around one hour and 20 minutes. Return to the same accommodation for the night.

Day 4Kotor and PerastGive the fourth day to the two most important historic towns in the Bay of Kotor. The drive from Podgorica to Kotor takes about one hour and 30 minutes, followed by a short coastal journey to Perast.10 to 11 hours | Overnight in Podgorica
4 to 5 hoursKotor Old Town and San Giovanni Fortress

Enter through the Sea Gate onto Arms Square, then cross Flour Square on the way to Saint Tryphon Cathedral and the churches of Saint Luke and Saint Nicholas. This sequence links Kotor's main squares and religious monuments within the walls. Set aside at least 90 minutes for the climb to San Giovanni Fortress and the descent. After lunch, drive for about 20 minutes along the bay to Perast.

3 to 3.5 hoursPerast and Our Lady of the Rocks

Walk along Perast's waterfront past Saint Nicholas Church and the palaces of former seafaring families. Take a return boat from the pier to Our Lady of the Rocks, where the church and museum explain the making of the artificial island and display maritime votive gifts. Back in Perast, begin the drive to Podgorica. Allow about one hour and 40 minutes to reach the accommodation where you started the day.

Day 5Budva, Sveti Stefan and PetrovacFollow the Budva Riviera from Budva's fortified core to the smaller bay at Petrovac. Budva is around one hour and 10 minutes from Podgorica, and all three visits continue in the same direction along the coast.9 to 10 hours | Overnight in Podgorica
2.5 to 3 hoursBudva Old Town

Explore the Citadel, Saint John Church, Santa Maria in Punta and the small squares joined by narrow stone lanes. From the space beside the Citadel, look over the marina, the bay and Sveti Nikola Island. Complete the circuit with a waterfront walk and lunch in Budva. Continue afterward to the overlook above Sveti Stefan.

1.5 to 2 hoursSveti Stefan and Miločer Park

The overlook above Sveti Stefan reveals the entire peninsula and the two beaches connecting it to the mainland. After taking in that view, descend to the coast and walk through Miločer Park, passing cypress trees and the former royal summer residence. Together, the high viewpoint and the coastal path provide a complete visit before the short drive to Petrovac.

1.5 to 2 hoursPetrovac and Kastio Fortress

Follow the Petrovac promenade to Kastio Fortress, a remnant of Venetian defenses above the present harbor. The terrace overlooks the whole bay as well as the islands of Katič and Sveta Neđelja. Walk back beside the beach and pause for a drink or early dinner. Podgorica is about one hour away, and the day ends at your original accommodation.

Day 6Stari Bar and UlcinjExplore the southern coast through two very different fortified settlements. Stari Bar lies around one hour and 15 minutes from Podgorica, while the trip back from Ulcinj takes roughly one hour and 20 minutes.9 to 10 hours | Overnight in Podgorica
3 to 3.5 hoursStari Bar Fortress and the old bazaar

Climb from the bazaar through the main gate of Stari Bar's extensive fortified complex. Within the walls, find the Citadel, Clock Tower, ruins of Saint George Cathedral, hammam and the aqueduct with its long line of stone arches. These structures reveal the town's medieval, Venetian and Ottoman layers. Return to the bazaar for lunch before continuing south to Ulcinj.

4 to 4.5 hoursUlcinj Old Town and Velika Plaža

Enter the Old Town through its upper gate and explore the Citadel, Balšić Tower, the Church-Mosque and the squares among stone houses. From the ramparts, look down over Mala Plaža, the harbor and modern Ulcinj below the fortress. Drive afterward to Velika Plaža and walk along a section of the broad sandy shore. Finish the day by returning to the same Podgorica accommodation.

Day 7Ostrog, Nikšić and Krupac LakeCombine Montenegro's best-known pilgrimage site with central Nikšić and an easy lakeside walk. Ostrog is about one hour from Podgorica, and the journey back from Krupac Lake takes a similar amount of time.8 to 9 hours | Overnight in Podgorica
2.5 to 3 hoursLower and Upper Ostrog Monasteries

Begin at the Lower Monastery, where the Holy Trinity Church and monastic residences stand on open ground. Continue uphill to the Upper Monastery, built into a sheer rock face. Its two small cave churches hold the relics of Saint Basil of Ostrog and draw pilgrims of several faiths. Wear clothing that covers shoulders and knees, then continue to Nikšić after the visit.

3 to 3.5 hoursNikšić and Krupac Lake

Connect Freedom Square, the Cathedral Church of Saint Basil of Ostrog and Bedem Fortress on a circuit through Nikšić. The three landmarks show the planned city center, its monumental church and the remains of an older stronghold. After lunch, drive out to Krupac Lake and spend about an hour walking beside the water. Return from the lake to your original Podgorica address.

Day 8Doclea and MedunUse day eight to understand the long history of the Podgorica area. Roman Doclea stands only a few miles from the center, while Medun in the Kuči region combines an Illyrian stronghold with the life and work of Marko Miljanov.6 to 7 hours | Overnight in Podgorica
2 to 2.5 hoursThe Roman city of Doclea

Doclea occupies a plateau between the Morača, Zeta and Širalija waterways, roughly four kilometers from central Podgorica. Trace the main street past the public baths, forum basilica and remains of the Capitoline temple, then continue to the large episcopal basilica in the eastern quarter. The layout makes the Roman city readable on the ground, while the surrounding waterways explain why this site was chosen. Continue to Medun afterward.

2.5 to 3 hoursMedun and the Marko Miljanov Museum

Climb through the remains of Illyrian Meteon to see portions of the massive walls, the later fortress and Saint Nicholas Church. The graves of Marko Miljanov and his wife Stefa lie beside the church. At the foot of the hill, his birthplace now contains a museum with personal objects, manuscripts and editions of his writing. Return to the same Podgorica accommodation after the museum.

Day 9Žabljak, Black Lake, Durmitor Ring and the Tara CanyonThis is the longest outing, so leave Podgorica early. Reaching Žabljak takes about two hours and 30 minutes, followed by Black Lake, the Durmitor Ring and Đurđevića Tara Bridge before the return south.13 to 14 hours | Overnight in Podgorica
2 to 2.5 hoursBlack Lake near Žabljak

Walk the full circuit around Great Lake and Little Lake. The approximately 3.6-kilometer trail passes through conifer forest and takes at least one hour without extended stops. Completing the loop reveals changing shorelines, the narrow connection between the two lakes and views toward Durmitor's peaks. Collect food and water from the car before beginning the panoramic drive.

4.5 to 5 hoursDurmitor Ring through Sedlo and Trsa

Pause first at Sedlo for the open view toward Durmitor's main summits, then stop near Prutaš and in the village of Trsa. Between these points, the road crosses high passes and runs beside pastures, seasonal shepherd settlements and permanent mountain villages. Take a short walk at each of the three stops. After completing the ring, drive back toward Žabljak.

3 to 3.5 hoursĐurđevića Tara Bridge and return to Podgorica

The bridge is about 30 minutes by car from Žabljak. Walk across its central section to appreciate the concrete arches, the steep canyon sides and the Tara far below the roadway. Allow roughly one hour to see the span from both directions. The drive to Podgorica then takes about two hours and 30 minutes and ends at the same accommodation.

Day 10Morača Monastery, Biogradsko Lake and KolašinThe final outing follows one northern corridor to Morača Monastery, Biogradsko Lake and Kolašin. After the forest walk and lunch, return to Podgorica and complete all ten days at the original base.9 to 10 hours | Overnight in Podgorica
1 to 1.5 hoursMorača Monastery

Drive for about one hour from Podgorica to Morača Monastery. Inside the enclosed grounds, visit the Church of the Dormition, the smaller Saint Nicholas Church, the monastic quarters and the courtyard above the river. Frescoes and icons from different periods record the complex's long artistic and spiritual life. Continue toward Biogradska Gora after the visit.

5 to 6 hoursBiogradsko Lake, Kolašin and the return drive

Allow about one hour to drive from Morača Monastery to Biogradsko Lake. The roughly 3.3-kilometer educational path circles the water through protected old-growth forest, with panels introducing local plants and animals. The circuit takes about 40 minutes without long pauses. Drive another 30 minutes to Kolašin, walk from Fighters' Square through the center and have lunch. The final drive to your Podgorica accommodation lasts about one hour and 15 minutes.

Mistakes when planning ten days from Podgorica

Each day should focus on one connected area, allow proper time at its main sights and include the return to Podgorica.

01Moving to new accommodation

The itinerary is designed around one base. Keeping the same Podgorica hotel or apartment gives every outing a known starting point and a clear finish.

02Leaving too late for Durmitor

The northern day combines roughly five hours of return driving with Black Lake, the Durmitor Ring and the Tara bridge. An early departure leaves enough time to visit all three before heading back to Podgorica.

03Combining the coastal days

Kotor Bay, the Budva Riviera and the southern coast differ in distance and the places worth exploring. Separate days give Kotor, Budva, Stari Bar and Ulcinj the time they need.

04Overlooking Podgorica and its surroundings

Stara Varoš, Gorica, Doclea and Medun reveal the city where you are staying and the history of the surrounding area. They make Podgorica part of the journey rather than a departure point alone.

What to arrange before each outing

Save the complete address of your Podgorica accommodation because every day starts and ends there. Book the Virpazar boat trip with a licensed operator, bring clothing that covers shoulders and knees for monasteries, and wear trail shoes at Black Lake and Biogradsko Lake. Fill the tank and carry food and water before leaving for Žabljak.

Who this itinerary suits

This plan works for travelers who want to remain in Podgorica while exploring Montenegro's capital, lake, coast, monasteries and mountains. Kotor Bay, Ulcinj and Durmitor require full days, while Podgorica, Doclea and Medun provide two shorter outings with less time in the car.

Which days involve the most driving

The journey to Žabljak, Black Lake, the Durmitor Ring and the Tara Canyon lasts approximately 13 to 14 hours. Kotor with Perast and Stari Bar with Ulcinj each require about 10 hours including the return.

What should I book or check in advance

Reserve the Virpazar boat trip with a licensed operator. Check the regular opening hours for museums, the mausoleum, monastery complexes and national park entrances before the day of the relevant visit.
