Day trip by car from Podgorica

Lake Skadar by car from Podgorica, viewpoint and boat trip

Lake Skadar, the largest lake in the Balkans, is known for boat trips through channels lined with water lilies and wetland shores where birds gather. Above Rijeka Crnojevica, Pavlova strana reveals the river's broad bend around a wooded hill, one of the area's distinctive views. On a boat trip from Virpazar, you can see herons among the reeds, cormorants and the stone walls of Lesendro. From Podgorica, you can devote a day to the lake, including a walk through the former river port and a boat trip from Virpazar.

Why set aside a day for this trip

Two hours on the lake give you time to move from open water into beds of water lilies and linger along shores where birds feed. Plan this time on the water as the main experience of the day. With about three hours of driving in total, most of the trip is available for visits and rest, while the walks along the riverfront and through Virpazar require no hiking fitness.

Route, visits and breaks

Durations are approximate. The overall trip includes a buffer for parking, boat check-in and slower driving on the narrow road.

01

Leaving Podgorica and the view from Pavlova strana

45 min driving · 20 min at the viewpoint

The river bend seen from Pavlova Strana
The river bend seen from Pavlova Strana

Set off in the morning towards Pavlova strana, turning off the main road from Podgorica towards Cetinje. Open the prepared route for navigation. The order is Podgorica, Pavlova strana, Rijeka Crnojevica, Virpazar, then Podgorica. Between Rijeka and Virpazar, the plan follows the slower scenic road through the surrounding hills. The return from Virpazar follows the main road via Vranjina.

The viewpoint is directly beside a narrow road. Leave your car in an available pull-off, keeping space clear for passing vehicles. Take time to see the whole river bend and the hills stretching towards the lake. No mountain hike is needed for this view, but there is no large parking area where you can count on finding a space.

02

Walking through Rijeka Crnojevica and across Danilo's Bridge

15 min driving · about 1 h for parking and walking

Danilo’s Bridge in Rijeka Crnojevića
Danilo’s Bridge in Rijeka Crnojevića

Drive down to Rijeka Crnojevica and park in the town, then walk to Danilo's Bridge. Its stone arches, the Mostina house beside it and the waterfront lined with old houses are the main sights on this walk. Cross the bridge to see the town from the opposite side, then follow the water's edge, where boats are moored.

The time allowed for this stop includes parking, the bridge and the riverfront. Reaching Obod Cave would require an additional walk and is outside this day's plan, which allows for a longer time on the water in Virpazar.

03

The scenic road to Virpazar and a boat trip on the lake

1 h 15 min driving · 45 min for parking, walking and check-in · 2 h boat trip

Virpazar, the cruise departure point
Virpazar, the cruise departure point

Continue towards Virpazar on the scenic road through the surrounding hills. This stretch is narrow and winding, with pull-offs where vehicles can pass each other. The driving estimate allows for a slower pace. Choose a passenger car for this section, as the official panoramic route advises against large motorhomes on these roads around the lake.

In Virpazar, leave your car in a parking area in the town and walk to the central bridge and waterfront. The jetties and boat operators' offices are in this part of town. Kingfisher asks passengers to arrive 30 minutes before departure for check-in. Parking, the short walk and check-in are included in this stage's time allowance, so choose your boat departure only after allowing enough time for the first two visits.

The plan includes a two-hour boat trip from Virpazar, following the channel into more open water, past Lesendro and areas with water lilies. The published price of Kingfisher's shared tour is 22.15 € per person, including national park admission. This is the specific offer used for this itinerary. When booking, check the price for your date and the passengers' ages. With another operator, check whether the 5 € day admission ticket is already included, so you do not pay it twice.

On this boat trip, you see Lesendro from the water. A landing at the fortress is not promised. The species and number of birds you see depend on the season and the flocks' movements at the time. A swimming stop is offered, but depends on conditions and the crew's decision, so do not count it as a separate visit. The boat returns to Virpazar, where you continue the trip in your car.

04

Lunch aboard Silistria in Virpazar

1 h for lunch and rest

Silistria boat restaurant
Silistria boat restaurant

After the boat trip, stop for lunch at Silistria restaurant. The restaurant occupies a moored boat on Virpazar's waterfront, keeping your break beside the water and close to the end of the boat trip. Its position by the jetty means no additional driving is needed for lunch.

This is lunch on a moored boat, separate from the lake trip and its price. After your meal, return to the parking area to continue towards Podgorica.

05

Returning to Podgorica via Vranjina

45 min driving

From Virpazar, follow the main road via Vranjina and Golubovci back towards Podgorica. This return route does not pass through the Sozina Tunnel and has no tolls.

Allow about eight to nine hours for the whole trip, including driving, walks, the boat trip, lunch and a buffer for parking and slower progress. The two-hour boat trip is already included in that total.

Trip highlights

01

Pavlova strana and the bend of the Rijeka Crnojevica

From Pavlova strana, you can see the Rijeka Crnojevica curve around a wooded hill before opening out towards Lake Skadar. The viewpoint's height lets you take in the whole bend and the flat stretches of water between the slopes. This view often appears in photographs of the area, but its shape is easiest to understand when you follow both arms of the river around the hill with your eyes.

Nearby, open water alternates with vegetation along the banks. Water lilies and reeds change the appearance of the river's edges through the year, so a photograph from another season may show a very different balance of water and greenery. The view from above gives you a broader picture of the wetland landscape you will later see from the boat.

02

Rijeka Crnojevica, Danilo's Bridge and the former port

The beginnings of Rijeka Crnojevica are linked to Ivan Crnojevic, who built a fortress and monastery at Obod. Its position on a navigable river later gave the town another role, as a trading centre connected to Lake Skadar. The old houses beside the water preserve traces of a place where people and goods once arrived.

Prince Danilo built Danilo's Bridge in 1853 in memory of his father, Stanko Petrovic. The Mostina house, which he also built, survives beside it. The bridge linked the town with Rijecki Grad and formed part of the old caravan road towards Virpazar. Walking across it makes the stone arches and the bridge's relationship to the narrow riverbank clearer than they are from the road approach.

King Nikola had his winter palace, Ljeskovac, here and built the New Bridge. The town's buildings thus retain its connection with the ruling family. Visits inside these buildings are not promised as part of this route.

03

Lake Skadar, water lilies, birds and Lesendro

Lake Skadar is shared by Montenegro and Albania, and its Montenegrin part has been protected as a national park since 1983. The lake's surface area changes with the water level, so the boundary between water, meadows and wetland vegetation also shifts through the year. In the north, shallow water, reeds and floodplain forests provide habitats for many bird species. The Montenegrin part of the lake has been on the Ramsar List of Wetlands of International Importance since 1995.

The boat trip alternates between broader views across the lake and passages through aquatic vegetation. White and yellow water lilies, water chestnut and reeds are part of the park's plant life. These beds provide shelter and food for animals, making the journey through this part of the lake interesting even when no fortress or village is in view. From the boat, you can observe where the plants give way to the navigable channel and how birds use their edges.

The Dalmatian pelican is one of Lake Skadar's characteristic species. Cormorants, herons and other waterbirds also inhabit the lake. A standard sightseeing boat trip does not guarantee a pelican sighting or access to a nesting site. Watching the life along the water is rewarding in itself, without approaching protected colonies.

Lesendro is a fortress near Vranjina, restored in 1832 during the rule of Petar II Petrovic Njegos. From here, a Montenegrin garrison protected the approach to Rijeka Crnojevica. The Ottomans captured the fortress in 1843 and later extended it. The walls you see from the boat therefore bear witness to the struggle for control of the lake and the routes towards the river town you visited earlier. On this tour, you view them from the water, without landing.

Questions before visiting Lake Skadar

Is a boat trip from Virpazar or Rijeka Crnojevica better?

From Rijeka Crnojevica, boat trips first follow the river, with longer tours continuing towards the lake. From Virpazar, boats follow a channel into the lake, with tours visiting Lesendro and areas with water lilies. For this day trip, we have chosen Virpazar for a two-hour boat trip, while you explore Rijeka on foot. When choosing a boat, check its route and duration. Trips with the same name do not necessarily cover the same areas.

Do you need a four-wheel-drive vehicle for this route?

No. This loop follows paved roads and is planned for a passenger car. The stretch between Rijeka Crnojevica and Virpazar, and the approach to Pavlova strana, have narrow bends that require slower driving and care when passing other vehicles. A large motorhome is not a good choice for these roads around the lake. If driving on narrow roads makes you uncomfortable, this scenic loop will not suit your way of travelling, despite its short total distance.

Do boat trips run all year and in any weather?

Do not assume there will be a daily departure without booking ahead. Operators have different seasonal programmes, and heavy rain or wind can change or cancel a tour. Before setting off, confirm the departure and conditions with your chosen operator. The boat trip is the main part of this itinerary, so arrange it before the other stops rather than looking for a boat only when you arrive.
