Day-by-day itinerary
Start Day 1 from Bar towards Lake Skadar, then use the week for Lovcen, Kotor, Durmitor, Tara, Ostrog and a measured coast return. Keep the longest drives early, protect lunch and parking windows, and skip extra viewpoints when daylight or weather starts to tighten the plan.
Day 1Bar to Kolasin via MoracaBegin Bar with a short city hello, then let Moraca Canyon pull the trip north. Kolasin is quiet, the base that makes tomorrow easier and gives you a relaxed mountain arrival.Full day | Sleep in Kolasin
Start with Bar's harbour and narrow lanes, parking near the main gate. Walk the fortress walls for a view of the coast and the rail bridge. The quiet morning street life helps you shake off travel fatigue before the long road ahead. Then head north towards Moraca Canyon and the first stretch of mountain roads to Kolasin.
Drive into the gorge and park at the designated car park near the monastery. A two-part walk along the river reveals the canyon's scale without rushing through the main viewpoint. Leave ample time for the monastery courtyard and a quick shop for water or snacks before continuing. This stop anchors the ascent and avoids backtracking later.
Arrive in daylight and stroll the small centre to unwind after a longer drive. This base keeps tomorrow's mountain drives comfortable and gives you a sensible finish for the day. Parking near the town centre is usually straightforward in the early evening.
Day 2Biogradska Gora and Tara valleyForest morning in Biogradska Gora, then the Tara valley road north. Zabljak sits as the real mountain base, with the next Durmitor day in focus.6-7h | Sleep in Zabljak
Enter the forest early while the trails are quiet and the lake path is gentle. The loop feels like a reset after canyon driving, with water and pines providing a simple, restorative pace. Leave before the day eats into Zabljak's cool air and dinner time.
Drive Tara's scenic route with a couple of clear viewpoints, not every stop. Use Mojkovac as a hinge, not a detour, and keep speeds reasonable on the winding road. Arrive in Zabljak with daylight remaining to check in and enjoy a light dinner after a long day.
Soft landing in Zabljak after a day of rolling mountain roads. Check in, feel the cooler air and skip scaling Black Lake if daylight is fading. The goal is a calm night to reset for Durmitor's big day tomorrow.
Day 3Durmitor ring and Black LakeGive Durmitor the full day it deserves. The ring offers breadth and Black Lake provides a pause, so keep both parts away from a long transfer.6-8h | Sleep in Zabljak
Let the Durmitor ring unfold at a comfortable pace. Include Sedlo, Prutas viewpoints and a meadow pull-off as core stops, then resist chasing every side trail. This is a mountain day, not a rapid transfer between points.
Return towards Zabljak for Black Lake circuit. The lake offers a natural pause with forest and water, making a good balance after the prior panoramic driving. Stop for a coffee by the water and enjoy a relaxed finish to the day.
Day 4Tara bridge, Piva and NiksicThis is a muscular driving day, with Tara, Piva and Niksic demanding attention. Start early and keep the stops tight, because the scenery here can easily eat into the day.6-7h | Sleep in Niksic
Reach the bridge when it is not crowded and take a clean walk across the span. The canyon view is enough here, and there is no need to turn the stop into a long photo spree. Save appetite for Piva, since this is still a heavy driving day.
Go slow through Piva and let Pluzine serve as the main lakeside pause. The road can feel narrow, so keep a modest pace and don't chase every side turn. Ensure fuel and daylight are considered before continuing towards Niksic.
End the day with a short waterfront pause at Krupac. This is a light wind-down after a dense stretch, avoiding a forced late finish. Sleeping near Niksic sets up an easier Ostrog morning.
Day 5Ostrog Monastery and into KotorReserve Ostrog morning for a calm visit, then drive towards the Bay for an evening in Kotor. The monastery slow-burn pays off with a reward by the Bay in cooler hours.5-6h | Sleep in Kotor
Visit Ostrog with modest attire and steady water supply. Park lower if the upper road is busy and use a shuttle or walk the last leg when needed. The site has its own rhythm, so let the stop breathe instead of rushing the ascent.
Head straight to the Bay of Kotor after Ostrog, aiming to arrive with daylight and a clean parking plan in Kotor. Let the evening in the old town be a calm, light-paced discovery rather than a scramble after a long drive.
Day 6Kotor and PerastKeep the car quiet around the Bay today. Kotor shines in cooler hours, Perast offers a contrasting Bay mood, and both feel best when not treated as parking errands.Full day | Sleep in Kotor
Enter Kotor early to beat heat and cruise traffic. Start with the squares, then climb only as far as the day allows. Kotor is best explored on foot when curiosity leads, not when parking frustrations mount.
Move to Perast once Kotor has delivered enough stone and stairs. Include the short boat visit before returning to the water for a relaxed Bay pause. Perast should feel like a contrast, not a second old-town checklist.
Day 7Lovcen, Cetinje and Bar returnThe final day climbs away from the coast towards Lovcen and Cetinje, then returns to Bar for a comfortable finish. The summit and royal heritage pace the day with a clear end.Full day | Sleep in Bar
Start the climb while the road is fresh and the car light on the ascent. Take the mausoleum time for wind and steps, and don't pretend Lovcen is a quick lookout. The ascent earns its payoff with daylight on the summit and Cetinje in view.
Keep Cetinje as a royal pause with a single interior stop on the way back. After Lovcen, this town provides cultural context without turning the day into a second full city visit. Leave while the road back to Bar still feels easy.
Return to Bar ahead of dinner pressure. The last leg should be plain and useful, because the coast has carried the later afternoon. End with a relaxed Bar evening and a clear departure mindset for the next day if needed.
Before booking, compare the hire price, deposit terms, luggage space and exact collection location.

What weakens a seven-day Bar loop
A week gives room for coast, lake and mountains, but only when the bases are chosen to align with the next road. The plan protects rest and transfer time.
A pretty town can be a poor base if it adds backtracking. Choose nights by the next road, not only by the view.
Northern roads slow after coastal traffic. Give mountain days enough daylight and avoid stacking them after a long beach day.
Durmitor needs time for weather, walking and slower roads. Do not compress into a quick detour.
Kotor, Budva, Bar and Perast can overload a week. Choose coast logic that serves the route and leave the rest for another trip.
Best for these travellers
This Bar-centred loop suits travellers who want a week across coast, lake and mountains without deep dives into every region. It leaves Ulcinj and raft trips for longer trips and shortens coast time rather than racing Durmitor.
