Ten outings from one Kotor base

Choose a day and follow its stops in the listed order. Every plan starts beside your accommodation in Kotor and finishes in the same place that evening.

Day 1Kotor Old Town, the walls and DobrotaKeep the first day within Kotor. Leave the car at Benovo, explore the Old Town before climbing the walls, and use the late afternoon for a waterfront walk through Dobrota.6 to 8 hours | The same accommodation in Kotor
20 to 30 minutesBenovo Car Park and the Sea Gate

Drive from your accommodation to Benovo Car Park and keep the car there while you visit the city. Cross the bridge over the Škurda, pass Kampana Tower and walk along the outer wall to the Sea Gate. Square of the Arms lies immediately inside the gate and is the starting point for the Old Town circuit.

75 to 90 minutesSquare of the Arms and St Tryphon Cathedral

Look first at the Clock Tower and Pillar of Shame on Square of the Arms, then take the lanes leading to St Tryphon Cathedral. When the cathedral is open, the Romanesque interior, stone canopy over the altar and treasury deserve time rather than a quick glance. Leave the cathedral towards Flour Square.

90 to 120 minutesMaritime Museum and St Luke's Square

Grgurina Palace houses the Maritime Museum and its models, portraits, weapons and domestic artefacts from Kotor's seafaring past. From the museum, continue to St Luke's Square and enter the neighbouring churches of St Luke and St Nicholas. Take a break here before climbing the city walls.

90 to 120 minutesCity walls and Our Lady of Remedy

Use the marked entrance to the city walls and follow the stone steps to the Church of Our Lady of Remedy. Its terrace gives a clear view over the tiled roofs, harbour and innermost part of the bay. Descend by the same steps and leave the Old Town through the River Gate beside the Škurda.

60 to 90 minutesDobrota waterfront and the return

Continue from Benovo on foot along the Dobrota waterfront as far as St Matthew's Church. The nearby stone jetties give an unobstructed view back towards Kotor's walls and the mountains behind them. Walk back to Benovo, take the car if your accommodation is further away, and finish at the same address.

Day 2Perast, Our Lady of the Rocks and RisanFollow the northern side of the inner bay for the second day. A boat visit and a complete walk through Perast come before the Roman villa mosaics in Risan, after which the same shoreline leads back to Kotor.7 to 9 hours | The same accommodation in Kotor
30 to 40 minutes of drivingKotor to the Perast entrance car park

Set off from Kotor through Dobrota, Ljuta and Orahovac, then use the public car park at the entrance to Perast on the Kotor side. The historic centre is best covered on foot, so the car can remain here for the full visit. Before taking a boat, agree on the departure pier and the time of the return crossing.

60 to 75 minutesOur Lady of the Rocks

The boat crosses to the man-made island and the Church of Our Lady of the Rocks in only a few minutes. Inside are paintings, silver votive plaques and gifts connected with generations of local sailors. Look from the stone edge towards the natural island of St George before returning by boat to Perast.

90 to 120 minutesSt Nicholas Church and Perast's palaces

Pass Zmajević and Smekja palaces, then visit the Perast Museum in Bujović Palace for portraits of captains, weapons and equipment once carried on ships from the bay. Continue to the opposite end of the waterfront before walking back to the car.

60 to 75 minutesRoman Mosaics in Risan

Risan and its Roman Mosaics are about 10 minutes from Perast, with parking beside the archaeological site. The surviving floors show how the rooms of a Roman villa were arranged, while the Hypnos panel is the most recognisable mosaic. Finish with a brief walk to the Risan waterfront and return to the vehicle.

Four decisions that matter

Mistakes that take time away from a ten-day stay

Changing accommodation, repeating the same shoreline and cutting distant visits short take useful time away from the places themselves.

01Moving to a different base

Keep the room and parking place in Kotor for the full itinerary. Returning to them each evening avoids packing luggage and checking into another property.

02Repeating Kotor and Perast

Kotor has the first full day and Perast the second. The fourth day therefore follows the other shore through Prčanj and Stoliv before continuing to Tivat.

03Starting the mountain days too late

Black Lake and Biogradsko Lake deserve their complete circuits. Leave Kotor early enough to spend two to three hours walking beside either lake.

04Moving the car during an Old Town visit

Use one car park for each historic centre in Kotor, Perast, Budva, Old Bar and Herceg Novi. Complete the connected streets and monuments on foot before collecting the vehicle.

What to arrange before setting off

  • Base address save the full accommodation address and the entrance to its car park in Kotor
  • Long outings leave early for Ulcinj, Durmitor and Biogradska Gora
  • Monasteries carry clothing that covers shoulders and knees for Ostrog, Morača, Cetinje and Savina
  • Footwear choose stable shoes for the walls, Lovćen, Old Bar and the lake paths
  • Boat and ferry agree the return boat time in Perast and follow the ferry queue at Lepetane
  • Evening return finish every outing at the same Kotor accommodation

Who will enjoy this itinerary

This plan is for travellers who prefer one room in Kotor and do not mind several full days on the road. Every outing provides a specific place to park, a practical order for the visit and enough time at each stop, from the morning departure to the evening return.

Questions about spending ten days in Kotor

Does every night remain in Kotor?

Yes. Each day starts beside the same Kotor accommodation and ends at its car park. Budva, Ulcinj, Nikšić, Žabljak and Kolašin are visited as day trips.

Which outings require the earliest start?

The outings to Ulcinj, Durmitor and Biogradska Gora require the longest drives. An early departure preserves two to three hours for the principal walk or historic site.

Is a car necessary on the first day?

Use it only to reach Benovo if your accommodation is farther away. Kotor Old Town, the walls and the Dobrota waterfront are then covered on foot, while the other nine days use the car beyond the city.
