5 days in Kotor: city and day trips
From Saint John's Fortress, Kotor's rooftops form a small triangle between the sea, river and mountain. A five-day stay lets you discover the town from that height and through its maritime collections, with long swims and trips that exchange the coast for mountain scenery.

Day 1: Kotor walls, Maritime Museum and Old Town
Why this day is worth planning
From the fortress, you can see how the walls enclose a small town beside the bay, while the Maritime Museum reveals the lives of its seafarers and captains' families. The climb and a walk through the squares are followed by lunch and a long rest, before an easy waterfront walk towards Dobrota.

Kotor walls and Saint John's Fortress
Kotor's walls follow the steep rock face from the Old Town up to Saint John's Fortress, also known as San Giovanni. Higher stretches overlook the red rooftops, harbour and Dobrota waterfront, with mountains enclosing the inner bay. The climb reveals the setting of the whole town, a view its narrow streets cannot offer.
The walk from the Sea Gate can begin around 08:00. It takes 15 minutes to reach the official Parilo entrance behind the Church of Blessed Ozana. The climb and descent take 110-125 minutes, with 30-40 minutes for sightseeing and another 15-20 minutes for short rests. Uneven stone steps and exposure to the sun make this the most demanding walk in the itinerary. The return follows the same official staircase.
For May-September, the official gates publish daily hours of 7-20. Access is through the marked, ticketed entrance. Unofficial passages through the walls are outside this route.
Maritime Museum in Grgurina Palace
The Maritime Museum occupies the Baroque Grgurina Palace on Bokeljska Mornarica Square. Ship models, weapons and portraits connect seafaring with life ashore. The Ivelic and Visin-Florio family salons bring that maritime wealth into a domestic setting, with furniture and objects preserved from homes around the bay.
The museum is a five-minute walk from the exit of the walls, with an hour for the collection. The visit ends between 11:55 and 12:25. For May-September, the museum publishes weekday hours of 9-18 and Saturday, Sunday and public holiday hours of 9-13.
Old Town squares and church exteriors
Short streets lead from Grgurina Palace to the square outside Saint Tryphon's Cathedral, then to Saint Luke's and Saint Nicholas' churches before returning to the Square of Arms. Stone facades and bell towers alternate with small squares, while the space near the main gate opens out towards the Clock Tower. The buildings are viewed from outside. The walk takes 25 minutes, with another 50 minutes for stops.
Lunch and a long rest after the climb
There are 35 minutes to rest in the centre before eating. Lunch begins between 13:45 and 14:15, with an hour for the meal and another hour to relax before the waterfront walk. Restaurants in Kotor can help you choose somewhere in the centre.
Short waterfront walk towards Dobrota
The waterfront towards Dobrota offers a sea-level view of Kotor, its walls climbing the rock behind the rooftops. Beyond the first houses are small jetties and sheltered boat basins, known locally as ponte and mandraci.
The walk from the Sea Gate passes the park and Zuta Beach to reach the first part of Dobrota, returning along the same waterfront. The walk takes 40 minutes in total, with 20 minutes for stops. The more distant palaces of Dobrota are beyond this short end-of-day walk.
Day 2: Orahovac Beach and Prcanj later in the day
Why this day is worth planning
In Orahovac, you swim beside stone houses and small jetties, with steep mountains across the bay. Later, Prcanj reveals the opposite shore, where the broad facade of the Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary stands out among former seafaring homes.

| Morning | Orahovac Beach and four hours for swimming | 4 h 25 min-4 h 40 min |
| Middle of the day | Lunch and rest in Orahovac | 2 h 25 min |

| End of the day | Prcanj back to Kotor | 25 min-40 min |
Orahovac Beach and four hours for swimming
Orahovac has small pebble beaches beside the stone houses and jetties of a former fishing village. Steep mountain slopes rise across the water in the inner Bay of Kotor. The houses and landing places give swimming here a different setting from Jaz later in the trip, where the coast opens towards the Adriatic.
You can leave Kotor around 09:00. The drive through Dobrota and Ljuta, parking and the walk to the shore take 25-40 minutes. There are four full hours for swimming and rest, ending between 13:25 and 13:40.
Amfora has a small parking area by the beach. Day visitors need to confirm a parking space and the terms of beach access with Amfora before arriving. The plan does not rely on stopping beside the main road.
Lunch and rest in Orahovac
The short walk and changing take 25 minutes in total, bringing the start of lunch to between 13:50 and 14:05. An hour for the meal and an hour of rest are included in the day's total.
The Amfora restaurant is on the Orahovac waterfront and serves lunch.
Church of the Nativity and the stone waterfront of Prcanj
The Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary in Prcanj dominates the waterfront houses with its broad stone facade and staircase. Maritime palaces, balconies and old garden walls line the shore. The wealth of former seafaring families is visible in large houses on the narrow strip between hillside and water.
From Orahovac, the road returns through Kotor, then follows the coast through Muo to Prcanj. Driving, parking and the approach to the church take 70-90 minutes, including the passage through town. There are 45 minutes to view the church exterior and take a short waterfront walk. Entry to the church and a climb onto Vrmac are outside this allowance.
Prcanj back to Kotor
The return from Prcanj follows the coastal road through Muo to Benovo parking. Driving and reaching town take 25-40 minutes. Longer summer traffic queues through Kotor can increase this estimate.
Day 3: Risan, Perast and Our Lady of the Rocks
Why this day is worth planning
In Risan, a Roman house preserves a floor depicting the sleeping god Hypnos, while Perast's waterfront belongs to a later world of seafaring and trade. The short boat ride to Our Lady of the Rocks reveals palaces beneath a steep hillside, seen from the water that underpinned their wealth.
Day details

- Finish
- Benovo parking, Kotor
| Part of the day | Activity | Total time |
|---|---|---|
| Morning | Risan and the Roman Mosaics | 1 h 40 min-1 h 55 min |
| Late morning | Perast's palaces, waterfront and Saint Nicholas' Church | 1 h 15 min-1 h 20 min |
| Noon | Short return boat trip to Our Lady of the Rocks | 1 h 5 min-1 h 35 min |
| Middle of the day | Lunch and rest on the Perast waterfront | 2 h 20 min |
| End of the day | Return along the same coast to Kotor | 1 h-1 h 10 min |
Risan and the Roman Mosaics
Risan's Roman Mosaics preserve the floors of a second-century town villa. Geometric and floral designs distinguish the rooms, including a depiction of Hypnos as a reclining young man with folded wings behind his shoulders. The surviving layout around a central space helps connect the decoration with individual rooms of the Roman house.
You can leave Kotor around 09:00 along the coastal road through Dobrota, Orahovac and Perast. Driving, parking and reaching the site take 40-55 minutes, with an hour for the visit.
From 15 April to 15 October, the site opens Tuesday-Sunday 8-20. It is closed on Mondays, Orthodox Easter and 1 May. An individual admission ticket costs 6 euros.
Perast's palaces, waterfront and Saint Nicholas' Church
Perast's palaces stand directly beside the sea, their stone balconies and facades facing the landing places. The town prospered through seafaring and trade and, unlike Kotor, has no belt of defensive walls along its waterfront. Bujovic Palace can be viewed from outside, and it now houses the town museum. The collection is outside this day's itinerary.
The drive from Risan to Perast's entrance parking takes 10-15 minutes, followed by five minutes to park and 15 minutes to walk to the waterfront. There are 45 minutes to walk past the palaces and the square outside Saint Nicholas' Church. The car stays at the entrance to town, before the waterfront's restricted traffic area.
Short return boat trip to Our Lady of the Rocks
Our Lady of the Rocks is an artificial island built up around a reef, associated with the votive tradition of Perast's seafarers. From the area around the church, you can see the town's stone waterfront beneath the steep mountain. Neighbouring Saint George, with its monastery and cypresses, is a natural island viewed from the water on this outing.
Arranging the crossing and boarding in Perast take 15 minutes, with 10 minutes on the water each way and half an hour on the island. A separate allowance of 0-30 minutes covers the wait for a return boat, matching the published departure interval. Sightseeing is outdoors. Church and museum admission, and landing on Saint George, are outside this time allowance.
Confirm the short return crossing and the return boarding point with the boat operator. A multi-hour excursion is a different service, and sailing depends on the weather. The short crossing from Perast lists return departures every 30 minutes.
Lunch and rest on the Perast waterfront
After the boat returns, lunch is in Perast. A five-minute walk to a restaurant and half an hour of rest precede the start of lunch between 13:35 and 14:25. There is an hour for the meal and another 45 minutes to rest afterwards.
Return along the same coast to Kotor
The walk from Perast's waterfront to the entrance parking takes 15 minutes, followed by 35-45 minutes of coastal driving to Kotor. Parking and the final walk into the centre add 10 minutes. The road through Orahovac, Ljuta and Dobrota follows the sea beneath steep mountain slopes, past stone houses and small jetties.
Day 4: Lovcen and Cetinje: mausoleum and royal palace
Why this day is worth planning
Njegos's Mausoleum on Jezerski Vrh brings a rocky mountain setting together with Ivan Mestrovic's monumental sculpture. Later, at King Nikola's palace in Cetinje, portraits, salons and the library reveal the royal family's life through the residence's reconstructed interiors.

| Afternoon | Dvorski Trg, Biljarda and the monastery exterior | 25 min |
| End of the day | Return from Cetinje via Budva to Kotor | 1 h 25 min-1 h 50 min |
Via Budva and Cetinje to Njegos's Mausoleum
The route from Kotor to Lovcen goes via Budva and Cetinje, then through Ivanova Korita to the parking area below the mausoleum. Driving takes 105-125 minutes, with another 10 minutes to park. The drive can start around 08:00. This route avoids the Kotor hairpins through Njegusi, although the final stretch to the parking area is still a winding mountain road.
The car stays below the steps leading up to Jezerski Vrh. Lovcen National Park admission and the mausoleum ticket are charged separately.
Njegos's Mausoleum and Jezerski Vrh
Two large caryatids flank the entrance to Njegos's Mausoleum and inside stands Mestrovic's figure of the poet and ruler beneath a gold mosaic vault. Behind the building, a viewpoint overlooks Lovcen's rocky karst landscape. The sculpture and interior remain the main sights when clouds hide more distant views.
There are 461 steps from the parking area. The ascent and descent take 50-65 minutes in total, with another 50 minutes for the mausoleum and viewpoint.
From 15 April to 15 November, the mausoleum opens daily 9-18. Adult admission costs 8 euros. Weather on the summit can differ from conditions in Kotor.
King Nikola's Museum in Cetinje
King Nikola's Museum preserves the reconstructed interiors of the Petrovic-Njegos family's palace. Its salons, portraits and library reveal a residence where family life and the ruler's state duties shared the same roof.
The drive and walk from the mausoleum parking area via parking on Trg Umjetnika in Cetinje to the museum entrance take 45-55 minutes. There is an hour for the collection itself. From 15 April to 15 November, the museum publishes daily hours of 9-17.
King Nikola's Museum also has a separate page listing hours of 9-16. This itinerary visits before lunch and finishes the museum before the earlier closing time.
Lunch and rest in Cetinje
The walk to somewhere to eat in central Cetinje takes five minutes, followed by 20 minutes to rest. Lunch begins between 13:45 and 14:30. An hour for the meal and 45 minutes of rest are included before the short walk and return drive. The Restaurants in Cetinje guide lists places in town.
Dvorski Trg, Biljarda and the monastery exterior
A short walk from Dvorski Trg passes Biljarda, Njegos's former residence, to reach the area beside Cetinje Monastery. The modest buildings among the trees give the old royal capital a different appearance from the bay's waterfront palaces. The walk takes 25 minutes, without entering Biljarda or the monastery.
Return from Cetinje via Budva to Kotor
The return from central Cetinje follows the main road through Budva to Kotor and Benovo parking. The walk to the car, driving, parking and the final approach take 85-110 minutes. Longer summer delays increase the estimate.
Day 5: Jaz Beach and Budva Old Town later in the day
Why this day is worth planning
Jaz offers a long swim on a coast open to the Adriatic after the small bathing spots of the inner bay. Later in Budva, stone streets lead to the church square and the sea beside the town walls.
Day details
- Start
- Benovo parking, Kotor
- Finish
- Benovo parking, Kotor
| Part of the day | Activity | Total time |
|---|---|---|
| Morning | Jaz Beach and four hours for swimming | 4 h 45 min-4 h 55 min |
| Middle of the day | Lunch and rest at Jaz | 2 h 15 min |
| Afternoon | Church square, stone streets and Old Town shore | 2 h 20 min-2 h 30 min |
| End of the day | Return from Budva to Kotor | 1 h-1 h 15 min |
Jaz Beach and four hours for swimming
Jaz is a broad bay on the Budva Riviera facing the open sea, with a long sand-and-pebble shoreline. In its central section, beside Talas, the beach has finer sand. The long shore and Adriatic outlook give swimming here a more spacious setting than Orahovac's small beaches between houses.
You can leave Kotor around 09:00, heading through Grbalj towards Jaz. Driving takes 30-40 minutes, parking 10 minutes and the walk to the water another five. There are four full hours for swimming and rest, ending between 13:45 and 13:55.
The plan uses the access beside Talas in the central part of Jaz. Its parking serves restaurant guests and beach users. Confirm beach access terms and sunbed reservations with the operator.
Lunch and rest at Jaz
Talas has a restaurant, changing rooms and a terrace on the same stretch of beach. A five-minute walk and 10 minutes to change bring the start of lunch to between 14:00 and 14:10. There is an hour for the meal and another hour to rest before leaving for Budva.
Church square, stone streets and Old Town shore
On Budva's church square, Saint John's tall bell tower stands beside the smaller Holy Trinity Church and Santa Maria in Punta. Surrounding streets pass between stone houses to Ricardova Glava, where the shore meets the town walls. The Citadel and churches are viewed from outside here.
It takes five minutes to walk from the beach to the car, 20-30 minutes to drive to Zetafilm parking in Budva, 10 minutes to park and 15 minutes to walk to the Old Town. Another half-hour of walking and an hour for stops cover its streets, church square and shore. Parking in Budva explains parking choices and payment.
Return from Budva to Kotor
The walk back to the same parking area in Budva takes 15 minutes, followed by a 35-50-minute drive through Grbalj to Kotor. Parking and the final walk into the centre add 10 minutes. Summer queues between Budva and Kotor can extend this estimate.
Before you go
Five full days and the visiting calendar
The plan covers May-September and five full days, excluding arrival and departure days. Day 3, with the Roman Mosaics, must not fall on a Monday, Orthodox Easter or 1 May. The Day 1 Maritime Museum visit also fits its shorter weekend hours. Approaches are calculated from the centre, with accommodation in Kotor.
Car, steps and the short boat crossing
Day 1 is on foot, and the other four use a hire car. Parking in Kotor can help you choose parking at your base. The fortress and mausoleum involve long flights of steps, while full beach stays are counted separately in Orahovac and at Jaz. The short return crossing from Perast depends on the weather and a confirmed return arrangement with the boat operator.
Frequently asked questions
Is Kotor a good base for five days with a hire car?
For this itinerary, yes: one day covers the fortress, museum and town, while four use a car for the bay's shores, Lovcen with Cetinje, and Jaz with Budva. Every night is in Kotor, so accommodation and parking need to be considered together. Arrival and departure days are outside the five full days.
Does this itinerary leave enough time for the beach?
Day 2 in Orahovac and Day 5 at Jaz each allow four full hours for swimming and resting. The activity tables add approaches to that beach time, with separate lunch and rest allowances before later walks. Orahovac is a small pebble bathing spot inside the bay, while Jaz faces the open Adriatic.
How demanding is the climb to Saint John's Fortress, and where does it start?
The official Parilo entrance is behind the Church of Blessed Ozana in the Old Town. The approach, ascent, sightseeing, short rests and descent together take two hours and 50 minutes to three hours and 20 minutes. Stone steps, the climb and exposure to the sun make this more demanding than walking through the town's squares. The plan returns by the same official staircase.
