Kotor in 3 days: beaches, Perast and Lovcen
In Kotor, medieval walls climb the mountainside while stone palaces stand just a few steps from the sea. Through the Sea Gate, narrow streets suddenly open into squares, with churches and the balconies of old seafaring families. A three-day stay combines time in town with long mornings swimming and a day in the mountains.

Why this itinerary is worth planning
Long mornings swimming leave the later hours for Kotor's squares and the Perast waterfront, so sightseeing does not take over the whole summer day. On Lovcen, the experience changes: Mestrovic's monumental sculpture and a walk through beech forest give you a reason to spend a day above the bay.
The itinerary is for May-September and three full days, excluding arrival and departure days. The first day is on foot, while the other two days use a hire car. Travel times start from central Kotor, with accommodation near the Old Town. Lunch, planned rest and the return journey are already included in the daily durations.
Day-by-day itinerary
| Day | What to see | Transport | Total time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Day 1 | Zuta beach in the morning, the Old Town in the early evening | On foot | 10 hours |
| Day 2 | Orahovac beach, Perast and Our Lady of the Rocks | Hire car, walking and boat | 11 hours |
| Day 3 | Njegos Mausoleum and Ivanova Korita on Lovcen | Hire car and walking | 9 hours |
Total time includes travel, visits and planned breaks. Each day's total is rounded up to the next whole hour. Unexpected summer traffic, finding parking and longer waits for the boat add time.
Day 1: Zuta beach in the morning, the Old Town in the early evening
Why this day is worth planning
A morning at the town beach and a later walk give you time to get to know Kotor both by the sea and within its walls. The town walk follows the squares and the Skurda river, without a demanding climb to the fortress after swimming.

| Part of the day | Activity | Total time |
|---|---|---|
| Morning | Zuta beach | 4 h 30 min |
| Midday | Return to the centre, lunch and rest | 3 h |
| Afternoon | Square of Arms, Pima Palace and Saint Tryphon Cathedral | 1 h 10 min |
| Early evening | Saint Luke, Saint Nicholas and the Skurda river | 1 h 15 min |
Zuta beach
Zuta beach, also marked on maps as Kotor Beach, is a small town beach at the start of Dobrota. It lies beside the promenade and houses, with steep mountain slopes around the bay. Here you swim beside the town rather than in a secluded cove on the open sea. The small beach also means less space during the season.
The walk north along the shore from the Sea Gate takes about 15 minutes. Starting around 09:00 leaves 4 hours and 15 minutes for swimming and rest at the beach, until about 13:30.
The approach follows the waterfront promenade towards Dobrota, past the outdoor swimming pool.
Return to the centre, lunch and rest
The walk back to the centre takes about 15 minutes. There is an hour for lunch around 14:00, with time to change and another hour and a half of rest before the later town walk.
Restaurants in Kotor can help you choose a place for lunch in the centre. The Old Town walk resumes at the Sea Gate. Returning to accommodation further away adds time to this schedule.
Square of Arms, Pima Palace and Saint Tryphon Cathedral
The Old Town walk starts around 16:30 through the Sea Gate. Just inside is the Square of Arms, with the clock tower facing the harbour entrance. The streets then narrow towards the smaller square beside Pima Palace. Its long stone balcony is a detail worth stopping to look at rather than simply passing on the way to the cathedral.
The space opens up again in front of Saint Tryphon Cathedral. The cathedral was completed in 1166, and its front bell towers were rebuilt after the earthquake of 1667. This walk stays in the squares, taking in the buildings from the outside.
Saint Luke, Saint Nicholas and the Skurda river
Two different churches stand on Saint Luke's Square. The small medieval Church of Saint Luke stands beside the much larger Church of Saint Nicholas, built in the early 20th century. Their scale, facades and bell towers show different periods of construction within one small town square. Both are viewed from the outside on this walk.
From the square, the walk continues to the North Gate and the bridge over the Skurda. The water beside this exit shows why the town's defences are tied to the river as well as the mountainside. The return route via the Kampana bastion leads back to the Sea Gate. This stage includes an hour and 15 minutes for walking and stops, without a climb to Saint John Fortress.
Day 2: Orahovac beach, Perast and Our Lady of the Rocks
Why this day is worth planning
Orahovac is a small coastal village with pebbly swimming spots between stone houses and piers. After a morning on that shore, Perast reveals another part of the bay's history: the large homes of seafaring families and palaces facing the sea. A short boat trip to Our Lady of the Rocks rounds off the visit beside the island church before the return to Kotor.

|---|---|---|
| Morning | Orahovac beach | 4 h 55 min-5 h 10 min |
| Midday | Changing, lunch and a break in Orahovac | 2 h 5 min |
| Late afternoon | Perast waterfront, palaces and island views | 1 h 10 min-1 h 15 min |
| Early evening | Return boat trip to Our Lady of the Rocks | 1 h 20 min |
| End of the day | Return along the shore to Kotor | 35 min-50 min |
Orahovac beach
Orahovac's small pebbly beaches sit between stone houses and piers. From the shore, you look across the inner bay towards steep mountain slopes, with the houses of the former fishing village behind you. This close connection between village and sea gives swimming here a different setting from the town beach in Dobrota.
The drive from Kotor through Dobrota and Ljuta, parking and the walk down to the shore take 25-40 minutes. Leaving the centre around 08:30 gives you 4 hours and 30 minutes at the beach for swimming and rest, ending between 13:25 and 13:40. Taking longer to find parking shifts this schedule.
Orahovac has both public and hotel beaches. This itinerary uses the public shore. Hotel loungers and parking are not included. Parking in the village is limited, so a space needs to be confirmed before arrival. Stopping along the main road is not part of the itinerary.
Changing, lunch and a break in Orahovac
You can plan lunch in Orahovac between 14:00 and 14:15, after changing. Amfora Restaurant is right on the waterfront, so you can stay in the village for lunch.
There are 30 minutes to rest after the meal before the drive to Perast.
Perast waterfront, palaces and island views
The drive from Orahovac to the car park at the entrance to Perast and the walk to the waterfront take 25-30 minutes. There is then a 45-minute walk along the shore, past the palaces and the square beside the Church of Saint Nicholas. The car stays outside the central waterfront, which is closed to vehicles without a special permit from 1 May to 30 September.
Perast's palaces face directly towards the sea. Their large stone facades and prominent balconies recall the wealth brought by seafaring and trade, while the bell tower of Saint Nicholas rises above the row of waterfront houses. Unlike Kotor's squares, enclosed by walls and buildings, here the water runs alongside your walk. Our Lady of the Rocks and Saint George are visible from the waterfront. This visit stays along the shore, without entering the Perast museum.
Return boat trip to Our Lady of the Rocks
The crossing from Perast to Our Lady of the Rocks takes about 7-10 minutes each way. The schedule includes 20 minutes for the outward and return crossings, half an hour on the island and another half hour for boarding and waiting for the return. You confirm the actual departure and return arrangements with your chosen boat operator before arrival.
Our Lady of the Rocks is an artificial island built up around a rocky outcrop. The church on this small patch of land in the bay is linked to the vows made by Perast's seafarers. A short visit to the open area outside shows the island's position between the Perast shore and the mountains around the bay. The church interior and museum are not included in this late visit, and there is no planned landing on Saint George.
Return along the shore to Kotor
The walk from the dock to the car and the drive back to Kotor take about 35-50 minutes. The return follows the same coastal road through Orahovac, Ljuta and Dobrota, without a ferry crossing. Summer traffic delays add time to this estimate.
Day 3: Njegos Mausoleum and Ivanova Korita on Lovcen
Why this day is worth planning
On Jezerski Vrh, the Njegos Mausoleum commemorates the poet and ruler through Mestrovic's monumental sculpture. Steps lead to the building, and the viewpoint looks out across the mountain landscape of Lovcen. Ivanova Korita lies lower down, among woodland and picnic areas, so the rocky summit is followed by a short walk among beech trees and lunch before the return to Kotor.

| Late morning | Njegos Mausoleum and the view from Jezerski Vrh | 1 h 40 min-1 h 55 min |
| Midday | A walk, a break and lunch at Ivanova Korita | 2 h 15 min-2 h 20 min |
| End of the day | Return to Kotor via Cetinje and Budva | 1 h 45 min-2 h 15 min |
Via Budva and Cetinje to the mausoleum car park
The drive from Kotor to the mausoleum starts around 09:00, passing through Budva and Cetinje, then Ivanova Korita to the car park below the Njegos Mausoleum. The itinerary includes 1 hour and 45 minutes to 2 hours and 5 minutes for driving and parking. This day passes through Cetinje without a town visit.
This route bypasses the hairpin road from Kotor towards Njegusi. The final approach to the mausoleum is still a winding mountain road, and the drive ends below the steps. A one-day visit to Lovcen National Park costs 3 euros per person. Admission to the mausoleum is charged separately.
Njegos Mausoleum and the view from Jezerski Vrh
The mausoleum stands on Jezerski Vrh, 1,657 metres above sea level. Two large caryatids guard the entrance, and inside is Ivan Mestrovic's statue of Njegos beneath a vault lined with gold mosaic. The monumental sculpture remains a focus of the visit even when clouds hide the distant views. The viewpoint then reveals Lovcen's open, rocky landscape.
There are 461 steps from the car park to the building. The itinerary includes 50-65 minutes for the ascent and descent, plus another 50 minutes for the mausoleum and viewpoint. This is the more physically demanding part of the day, requiring sturdy footwear and the ability to make a long climb up steps.
From 15 April to 15 November, the mausoleum is open daily from 09:00 to 18:00. It is closed outside that period. Adult admission costs 8 euros. Visibility and conditions at the summit can differ from those in Kotor.
A walk, a break and lunch at Ivanova Korita
The drive from the mausoleum car park to the picnic area at Ivanova Korita takes 25-30 minutes. Maintained paths behind Ivanov Konak lead through beech forest. The half-hour walk stays close to the hotel and includes the return to the car. The tall trees and woodland offer a different experience of Lovcen from the open, rocky summit visited in the morning. The full circular hiking trail is not part of this day.
A short break follows the walk, then lunch around 14:00. Ivanov Konak has a restaurant and a summer terrace. Before the trip, check that it is serving lunch that day and how to access the parking area, as the hotel lists a small car park.
Return to Kotor via Cetinje and Budva
The return drive from Ivanova Korita follows the same route through Cetinje and Budva to Kotor. The itinerary includes 1 hour and 45 minutes to 2 hours and 15 minutes for the return journey. Longer summer delays on the road push back the arrival in Kotor.
Planning your stay
Parking at your accommodation and access to Perast
Parking in Kotor gives an overview of town car parks when your accommodation does not have a parking space. In Perast, navigation leads to the car park at the entrance, before the walk to the waterfront and the part of town with restricted traffic. Parking charges and any link between parking and a boat trip are checked at the entrance.
Boat arrangements and weather on Lovcen
The crossing to Our Lady of the Rocks is planned for later in the afternoon. A confirmed return with the boat operator is therefore important, with about half an hour on the island, because a full excursion lasting several hours is a different service. For Lovcen, the mountain forecast matters: clouds can hide the view from the summit, and conditions differ from those on the coast.
Questions about a three-day stay in Kotor
Is 3 days too long for Kotor?
The Old Town alone does not need all three days. This itinerary suits a stay with longer mornings swimming and a trip to Lovcen, alongside Perast and a short boat trip to Our Lady of the Rocks. It assumes three full days: three nights with a late arrival and an early departure do not leave the same amount of time for this itinerary.
Can you swim in Kotor, and what are the beaches like?
Yes, this itinerary includes swimming at Zuta beach in Dobrota and in Orahovac. These are small swimming spots in the bay, beside houses, the coastal road and piers. The first beach stay lasts 4 hours and 15 minutes, and the second 4 hours and 30 minutes, including swimming and rest. These are not long sandy beaches, and space is not guaranteed. Current bathing water ratings are available through the official seawater quality monitoring.
Do you need a hire car for this three-day itinerary?
The first day is on foot. The second and third use a hire car to reach Orahovac and the car park outside Perast, then Lovcen via Budva and Cetinje. The car reaches the car park below the mausoleum. The remaining 461 steps are covered on foot, both up and down. Driving, parking and access are included in the durations shown. Unexpected summer traffic adds time.
