Tivat in 3 days: beaches, Gornja Lastva and Kotor

A town beach a short walk from the waterfront makes Tivat a good summer base for combining swimming with sightseeing. Behind the large yachts in the marina, a stone summer residence and a park dating from the days of the naval Arsenal reveal the town’s earlier maritime and aristocratic past. Three days give you time to explore that older Tivat and the nearby Bay of Kotor, while spending two mornings by the sea.

Why this itinerary is worth planning

The first two mornings have different settings: Belane is beside a small town harbour, while Plavi horizonti lies in a sandy cove surrounded by greenery. With at least four hours at each beach and a separate day for Kotor and Perast, this itinerary suits travellers who want longer swims and cultural visits during the same stay.

The itinerary covers three full days from May to September, with Tivat as the base. The first day is on foot. The other two use a rental car. The starting point is the centre by Pine, so accommodation in Tivat farther away adds travel time.

Day 1: Belane beach in the morning, Pine and Porto Montenegro in the early evening

10 hours totalOn foot

Why this day is worth planning

You spend the first morning by the sea, close to the centre. The later walk reveals two different sides of Tivat: the stone tower of a former aristocratic estate and the marina that took over the site of the military Arsenal. Between them, the shade of Big City Park offers a pleasant break from the open waterfront.

Belane beach and a morning for swimming

Morning4 h 30 min

Belane is a small pebble beach on the southern stretch of Tivat’s waterfront, beside Kalimanj harbour. Its proximity to the centre is its main advantage on the first day: you can spend a long morning by the sea, then continue with a walk through town. Small boats are moored in Kalimanj next to the beach.

The walk from Pine to Belane takes 15 minutes in this itinerary. Starting around 9:00 leaves 4 hours and 15 minutes at the beach, until 13:30, for swimming and relaxing. The beach’s small size means it can fill up during the season.

Lunch in the centre and a break after the beach

Midday3 h

The return to the centre, lunch around 14:00 and a longer rest separate the beach morning from the later walk. The walk back takes about 15 minutes, with the rest of this three-hour stage left for changing, eating and taking a break.

Brodet is a local option for a fish lunch: fish cooked in a sauce. The Tivat restaurant guide covers places to eat. The walk after your rest starts in the centre, so there is no need to head to the marina for lunch.

Buca-Lukovic summer residence and Big City Park

Afternoon1 h-1 h 15 min

The Buca-Lukovic summer residence on Culture Square recalls a time when noble families from Kotor had seaside estates in Tivat. The stone tower and gateway resemble a small fort in the modern town centre. The complex also includes Saint Michael’s Chapel, making it worth looking at how the residence, estate and family church were brought together in one place. This itinerary covers the exterior.

Big City Park is the next stop before the promenade. It was founded in 1892 beside what was then the Arsenal. Its tall trees and shaded paths reveal a different side of Tivat from the open waterfront. The park’s maritime past is also linked to plants brought back by sailors from their voyages. Visiting these two places takes 60-75 minutes, including 20 minutes of walking between stops.

Porto Montenegro and the walk back to Pine

Early evening1 h-1 h 15 min

From the park, the walk heads towards Porto Montenegro, then follows the waterfront back to Pine. Large yachts are now moored on the site of the former naval Arsenal, in a marina with shops and outdoor terraces. The difference is one of scale: the vessels beside the promenade are much larger than the small boats seen near Kalimanj in the morning. The public promenade lets you explore the marina from the shore.

At Pine, the wider town waterfront opens up again, with palm trees, terraces and views across Tivat Bay. The visit and return to Pine take 60-75 minutes, including the walking.

You return to Pine between 18:30 and 19:00. The planned 10 hours cover the whole day, including both breaks. Dinner follows the day’s itinerary.

Day 2: Plavi horizonti beach, then Gornja Lastva later in the day

10 hours totalBy rental car and on foot

Why this day is worth planning

Plavi horizonti offers a different beach experience: swimming in a sandy cove on Lustica instead of along the town waterfront. Later, the view from Gornja Lastva opens across Tivat Bay towards that peninsula. Stone houses and an old olive mill also reveal the area’s rural past above today’s marina.

Plavi horizonti beach: swimming in a sandy cove

Morning4 h 40 min-4 h 55 min

Plavi horizonti lies in Przna Bay on Lustica, near Radovici. Sand continues into the shallow water, and green slopes enclose both sides of the cove. Deeper water is farther out from the beach, so the seabed does not drop away suddenly.

Driving from central Tivat, parking and walking to the shore take 40-55 minutes in the itinerary. Starting around 8:30 leaves a full 4 hours at the beach, until around 13:15. The four hours cover only your time at the beach. Getting there is included separately in the activity’s total duration.

Return to Tivat, lunch and a rest

Midday3 h 5 min-3 h 15 min

You return from the cove to Tivat for lunch around 14:00. The return trip, meal and an hour and a half of rest take a total of 3 hours and 5-15 minutes. The longer break falls in the hottest part of the day, before the visit to the village on Vrmac.

The Tivat restaurant guide lists places along Pine and in the neighbouring streets. You head to Gornja Lastva around 16:30, leaving enough time for a meal and a rest between the beach and the later visit.

Gornja Lastva’s stone houses and a view of the bay

Late afternoon1 h 25 min-1 h 50 min

Gornja Lastva sits on the slope of Vrmac, about 300 metres above sea level. Stone houses cluster around the Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, while olive groves and an old mill reflect the village’s former rural life. The village and its views make it worth lingering: Tivat Bay lies below, Lustica is across the water, and the sea is visible beyond it. The visit covers the stone paths and the church exterior.

The paved road to the village branches off the main road at Donja Lastva. The uphill section from that junction is about three kilometres long. The outward and return drives take a total of 40-50 minutes, with 45-60 minutes for a walk through the village. This is a short visit to Gornja Lastva, rather than a hike across the Vrmac ridge.

You return to Tivat between 17:40 and 18:30. The 10-hour daily total includes four hours at the beach, lunch and a break, along with all the planned drives and the village walk.

Day 3: Kotor, Perast and a short boat ride to Our Lady of the Rocks

9 hours totalBy rental car, on foot and by small boat

Why this day is worth planning

Kotor and Perast reveal two different ways of living along the Bay of Kotor: a compact town behind walls and palaces built along the shore. The road between them is also interesting, following the sea beneath steep mountain slopes. A short boat ride to Our Lady of the Rocks gives you a view of Perast from the bay after walking along its waterfront.

Arrival in Kotor and parking outside the walls

Morning45 min-1 h

The road from Tivat runs through the Vrmac tunnel to Kotor. With a start around 9:00, the drive, parking at Benovo and walk to the Old Town take 45-60 minutes in the itinerary. Benovo is outside the walls. From there, you continue on foot.

Traffic queues build up on the approaches to Kotor in summer, so the short distance does not always mean a quick arrival. Parking in Kotor covers municipal car parks and payment, while the prepared navigation ends at Benovo.

Kotor’s Old Town squares, palaces and churches

Late morning2 h 20 min

From the Sea Gate, the walk leads through the Square of Arms and smaller streets to Saint Tryphon’s Cathedral. Its twin bell towers and the stone palaces on neighbouring squares give you a good reason to slow down: in Kotor, a few steps often bring you to a very different facade or a small square. The return leg passes the churches of Saint Luke and Saint Nicholas, ending back at the Sea Gate.

Kotor stands between the sea and a steep mountain, with walls climbing high up the slope above the town. This combination of a fortified historic centre, mountainous backdrop and bay is part of the value of the UNESCO-listed area. The walk and exterior sightseeing take two hours and 20 minutes. Museum visits and the climb to Saint John’s Fortress are not included in this day.

Drive to Perast and a walk among the palaces

Midday1 h 40 min-1 h 45 min

The drive through Dobrota towards Perast follows the shore of the Bay of Kotor. The road runs beside the sea, while steep mountain slopes rise above the stone settlements: the landscape is part of the day trip alongside the visits to the towns themselves. Driving, parking and walking to the Perast waterfront take 40-45 minutes in the itinerary.

A walk along the water takes you past Perast’s palaces to the square by Saint Nicholas’s Church. Large stone houses once belonging to seafarers face the bay, with little space between the facades, shore and hillside. Across from the waterfront are Our Lady of the Rocks and Saint George, with its cypress trees. An hour is set aside for walking and pausing along the shore before lunch.

Lunch on the Perast waterfront

Lunch1 h

There is an hour for lunch on the Perast waterfront, around 14:00. The break falls between the walk through town and the boat ride to Our Lady of the Rocks, so the car stays in the same car park until you return from the island.

By small boat to Our Lady of the Rocks

Afternoon1 h 20 min

From the water, you can see how tightly Perast fits between the shore and hillside: palaces, a church bell tower and landing stages line a narrow strip beside the sea. The crossing to Our Lady of the Rocks takes about 7-10 minutes each way. The whole stage takes an hour and 20 minutes in the itinerary: up to 20 minutes for both crossings, half an hour on the island and half an hour allowed for boarding and the return boat.

Our Lady of the Rocks is an artificial island built up around a rock, linked to the votive tradition of seafarers from the Bay of Kotor. From the small stone platform around the church, you can see Perast on one side and neighbouring Saint George island with its cypress trees. The visit covers the island and the church exterior. Going inside the church and museum is not included in that half-hour.

Return from Perast to Tivat

End of the day55 min-1 h 15 min

The return to Tivat follows the same side of the bay, through Kotor and the Vrmac tunnel. Walking back to the car and driving take 55-75 minutes in the itinerary. The day ends in Tivat, leaving the evening for a walk or dinner after the trip.

You return to Tivat between 17:00 and 17:40, based on the planned stage durations. The 9-hour total includes driving, walking, lunch and the boat ride, with time allowed for the return boat. Longer traffic delays add to the day.

Planning your summer stay

Access and parking during your stay

At Plavi horizonti, there is a municipal car park in Krtoli, with a walk from there to the beach. Parking and access time are already included in the first stage. For driving into the centre during your stay, parking in Tivat covers municipal car parks and how to pay.

What to arrange for the boat ride

Perast operators offer different boat rides, from a short return crossing to longer trips with several stops. This day requires a return to the same landing point in Perast. The operator confirms departure, time on the island and the return according to weather conditions. A boat ticket and a visit inside the church are separate services.

Questions about a three-day stay in Tivat

Is Tivat or Kotor a better base for three days?

Tivat suits this itinerary because two mornings are spent at the beach and the town waterfront is explored on foot. Kotor is a better base for a longer visit to the Old Town and the climb to the fortress. Here, Kotor and Perast have a separate day, with a return to Tivat.

Do I need a rental car for this three-day itinerary?

The first day is on foot. The itinerary uses a rental car for Plavi horizonti and Gornja Lastva, then for Kotor and Perast. This is the planned way to travel along this route. You walk through Kotor’s historic centre and along the Perast waterfront, and take a small boat to Our Lady of the Rocks.

How much time is actually spent at the beach?

There are four hours and 15 minutes at Belane and four hours at Plavi horizonti for swimming and relaxing. Travel to the beach is included separately in the activity’s duration, so the larger figure in the table does not reduce your time by the sea. The third day is for Kotor and Perast, with no beach stop.
