Zabljak itinerary

Zabljak in 3 days: Durmitor lakes, Sedlo and the Tara Canyon

Medjed rises above Black Lake, whose shores are surrounded by dense conifer forest. A summer stay in Zabljak leaves time for longer lakeside walks and trips through open mountain landscapes. Three days cover both the lake forests and high viewpoints, with a return to town for lunch and an afternoon rest.

Why this itinerary is worth planning

This stay suits travellers who want to explore lake forests, the open Durmitor plateau and the Tara Canyon without climbing high summits. The first day involves several hours of walking, while Curevac includes rocky and sometimes narrow sections of trail.

The itinerary is for July-September and three full days, with accommodation in central Zabljak. The first day is on foot, while a hire car is used for Sedlo, the Jezerska Povrs plateau and Curevac. The excursions require passable roads and trails, with dry weather for the canyon walk.

Walk to Black Lake and its shore

Morning1 h 15 min

Black Lake consists of Veliko and Malo Jezero, joined by a narrow channel. At lower summer water levels, the connection between them may temporarily disappear. Conifer forest surrounds the water, with Medjed rising above it.

The walk from accommodation in central Zabljak to the main shore is estimated at 45 minutes. Leaving around 9:15 brings you to the lake around 10:00. There is another half hour to look around beside the water. This activity takes an hour and 15 minutes in total.

The approach follows the road from the centre towards the main entrance to Black Lake. The published Durmitor National Park price list gives a day ticket at €5 per person.

Forest path to Zminje Lake and back

Late morning2 h 45 min

Zminje Lake is a smaller glacial lake in dense conifer forest. Its greenish water and the trees enclosing the shore give it a different appearance from the broad approach to Black Lake.

The walk from Black Lake to Zminje Lake is estimated at 70 minutes each way. There are 25 minutes to look around on the shore. This totals 2 hours and 45 minutes, with a return to the main shore of Black Lake around 13:15.

The forest path from Black Lake to Zminje Lake is described on the Zabljak Tourist Organisation website and shown on the official Durmitor map. Google Maps may show a longer road detour between these points, which does not match the walk in the itinerary. The return follows the same forest path to the main shore of Black Lake.

Planning a summer stay

Mountain roads and weather

The eastern approach to Sedlo is part of the narrow panoramic road through Durmitor. Current information on this section and the trails is available from the Zabljak Tourist Organisation, at +382 67 174 617. The published brochure describes possible rockfalls and road damage after winter and rain, so summer alone does not establish that the route is passable.

What the day trips cover

The second day visits Sedlo and the lakes of the Jezerska Povrs plateau, returning along the eastern side. It covers part of the Durmitor landscape, without the full circuit through Trsa and the Susica Canyon.

Questions about three days in Zabljak

Do you need a car for this three-day stay?

The first day is on foot, from central accommodation towards Black Lake and Zminje Lake. A hire car is used for Sedlo, the Jezerska Povrs plateau and the Curevac trailhead. Total times include parking, short walking approaches and the return to the same base.

Do these walks include an ascent of Bobotov Kuk?

No. The first day follows forest paths to the lakeshores, while the third goes from the road approach to Curevac and back. Curevac has rocky and narrow sections beside the canyon, but the itinerary does not include Bobotov Kuk, other high summits or the Ice Cave.

Can you follow this itinerary in May or in rain?

The itinerary is set for July-September, with passable roads and trails. Winter snow, rockfalls and road damage can affect the road towards Sedlo even after winter, while the rocky trail to Curevac can be slippery in rain. For a visit in May, first check whether the road and trails are passable.
