Orjen and stone villages by car from Herceg Novi
Orjen, the highest massif in the coastal Dinaric Alps, rises behind Herceg Novi. Villages on its slopes overlook the entrance to the Bay of Kotor, and in Žlijebi even the roofs are made of local stone slabs.

Why set aside a day for this trip
The stone roofs of Žlijebi show how local stone shaped life in the hills behind Herceg Novi: the same material was used for houses, boundary walls and old roads. A day here gives you time to examine that construction up close, stop at viewpoints above the bay entrance and take a break in Orjen’s beech forest. Two shorter walks let you explore the villages and viewpoints without devoting the day to a mountain summit.

Route, visits and breaks
The itinerary requires dry paths without snow, enough daylight and a meal arranged in advance at Vrbanj.
01Leaving Herceg Novi and the view from Tajno Brdo
25 min driving · 10 min parking · 1 hr 35 min walking and visiting
Set off in the morning and open the full route in the overview, with Kameno as the first stop. Allow about 25 minutes to drive from Herceg Novi to the village, then another 10 minutes to park and get ready for the walk. Leave the car at the parking area in Kameno. After the visit, return to it along the same path.
Allow about 1 hour and 35 minutes to walk to Tajno Brdo, look around and return. The outward and return walk totals about 2.3 km. Views over the bay and the remains of the former fort make this first stop worthwhile. The village’s stone houses are viewed from outside. This is a visit to the fort’s outdoor remains, without a restored interior to tour.
02The stone roofs of Žlijebi and the viewpoint at St. Nicholas
25 min driving · 10 min parking · 1 hr 45 min for the village and viewpoint

Allow about 25 minutes to drive from Kameno to Žlijebi, plus another 10 minutes to park. The prepared navigation point marks your arrival in the village. The tourist organization lists parking around the village, so continue on foot from there rather than driving through the narrow passages between houses.
Set aside about 1 hour and 45 minutes for the village, the terrace of the Church of St. Nicholas and the return to your car. The full walk is approximately 1.4 km. In the village, look at how stone slabs are laid in the roofs and walls. At the church, take time for the view over the entrance to the bay. The plan includes an exterior visit to the church and its terrace.
03Driving to Vrbanj and a break in the beech forest
55 min driving · 10 min parking · 45 min at the recreation area

After Žlijebi, continue through Kruševice toward Vrbanj. Allow approximately 55 minutes for the roughly 21 km drive, and another 10 minutes to park by the recreation area.
At Vrbanj, allow about 45 minutes to spend at the recreation area and explore its beech forest.
Driving farther toward Orjen Saddle requires a special permit from the park management. The adventure park courses have separate access conditions and fees and are not included in this visit.
04A meal arranged in advance at Taverna Domestic
10 min driving · 10 min arrival · 1 hr 15 min for the meal
From the recreation area to Taverna Domestic, the local road covers approximately 2.6 km. Allow about 10 minutes for the drive, another 10 minutes to arrive and park, and 1 hour and 15 minutes for the meal. The tavern receives guests by arrangement, so confirm the time and available food with the host before setting off. Guests can park free of charge.
Domestic offers local prosciutto and other cured meats in a stone setting. Local red wine is served from an opening in the rock.
05Returning to Herceg Novi
About 55 min driving
From the tavern, drive through Kruševice toward Herceg Novi. Allow approximately 55 minutes for the roughly 24 km return drive.
Set aside about 9 hours and 30 minutes for the whole trip. This includes driving, parking, the walks around Kameno and Žlijebi and back to your car, time at Vrbanj, a meal and a 40-minute allowance for slower progress on narrow roads or longer stops during the visits.
Trip highlights
01Kameno and Tajno Brdo above the entrance to the bay
Kameno is a village in the hills immediately behind Herceg Novi, beside the road toward Trebinje. Its stone houses and boundary walls reflect the traditional building methods of these villages. From the edges and more exposed positions, views open toward the bay entrance and Luštica.
Kamensko Polje formed from material carried down from Orjen by glaciers and water during the ice age. Its gentler terrain contrasts with the fractured limestone landscapes higher on the mountain.
Parts of a former military fort survive on Tajno Brdo. Its position high above the bay allowed observation of the coast. Today, the visit takes in outdoor remains and a viewpoint, without a museum interior.
02Žlijebi, a village built and roofed in stone
Local sedimentary stone was used in Žlijebi for the walls and roofs of houses, boundary walls and old roads. Overlapping rows of slabs are visible on the roofs. They give the village its distinctive appearance, with roofs and facades sharing the color of the same material.
Dry-stone construction means laying stone without a binding material. In Žlijebi, you can examine this technique in the boundary walls beside the passages and compare it with the arrangement of slabs on the houses.
The terrace of the Church of St. Nicholas occupies an exposed position above a cliff. It overlooks the entrance to the bay and the peaks of Orjen.
03Vrbanj and Orjen’s beech forests
Vrbanj is the main western approach to this part of Orjen and a well-known recreation area in the hills behind Herceg Novi. Beech forest surrounds the recreation area, with limestone features still visible between the trees.
Orjen is a limestone massif. Water passes through cracks and drains underground, leaving fractured rocks and stony plateaus on the surface. Fossils of marine organisms in the limestone show that today’s mountain massif rose from a former seabed.
Vegetation changes with altitude on Orjen. The maquis of the lower slopes gives way to mountain forests, while Bosnian pine grows in higher zones toward the peaks.
Questions before a day trip to Orjen
How far can you drive in a regular car on this trip?
You drive to Kameno, Žlijebi, the recreation area at Vrbanj and the tavern. Tajno Brdo and the terrace of St. Nicholas are reached on foot, with a return walk to the car. The higher road from Vrbanj to Orjen Saddle requires a special permit from the park management and is not part of the driving plan.
Does the trip include a climb to Orjen’s summit?
No. The highest stop is the recreation area at Vrbanj. The walk to Tajno Brdo and back totals about 2.3 km, and the walk around Žlijebi and the terrace of St. Nicholas is about 1.4 km. Time among the beech trees at Vrbanj does not include a climb to Veliki Kabao or a visit to Orjen Saddle.
Are sandals or ordinary city shoes suitable?
The approach to Tajno Brdo includes rocky and unpaved ground, so you need footwear with soles that grip these surfaces. The same applies to the paths around the recreation area at Vrbanj.
