The Petrovic-Njegos family’s belongings in the reconstructed palace rooms offer a glimpse of royal life. The differently furnished drawing rooms, dining room and bedrooms reveal the family side of Montenegro’s last king, and the collection also includes the royal library.
Starting from your accommodation around 10:30, the walk to the palace is estimated at 15 minutes. There is an hour for the collection, separate from five minutes to enter.
King Nikola Museum lists daily opening hours of 9:00-17:00 from 15 April to 15 November. Individual adult admission is €8.
Lubarda, Milunovic and Dado at the Art Museum
At Vladin Dom, the Art Museum’s permanent collection traces Montenegrin painting from the beginnings of modernism to contemporary art. Separate sections devoted to Milo Milunovic, Petar Lubarda and Miodrag Dado Djuric bring their different approaches to painting together. The Blue Chapel holds the icon of Our Lady of Philermos.
The museum is about a ten-minute walk from the palace. There are 75 minutes to view the paintings and chapel, plus five minutes to enter.
The Art Museum is open daily from 9:00-17:00 between 15 April and 15 November. The individual ticket for the Art and History Museums costs €5.
Dvorski Trg, lunch and a rest in the centre
Returning from Vladin Dom to Dvorski Trg and taking a short stroll is estimated at 30 minutes, followed by another ten minutes to reach lunch in the centre.
Lunch can start around 14:00. An hour for the meal is followed by a ten-minute walk back to your accommodation and 80 minutes of rest. The recommendations for where to eat in Cetinje can help you choose a place.
Day 2: Lovcen and Njegos’s birthplace in Njegusi
Why this day is worth planning
The mausoleum shows Njegos’s place in Montenegro’s national memory, while his birthplace brings the story back to a village household. Between them is a drive through Lovcen’s limestone landscape, with lunch featuring Njegusi’s local produce.

| Middle of the day | Njegos’s birthplace in Erakovici | 1 h 40 min |
| Lunch | Lunch in Njegusi | 1 h 45 min |
| Afternoon | Return to Cetinje via Bukovica | 55 min |
The steps and panorama from Jezerski Vrh
A tunnel with 461 steps leads to the Njegos Mausoleum on Jezerski Vrh. Inside, a large stone figure of Njegos sits beneath a golden mosaic, while behind the building, a path reaches a circular viewpoint above Lovcen’s rocky slopes.
Starting around 9:30, the drive via Ivanova Korita to the upper access point is estimated at 45 minutes. The walk to the car, parking and the ascent and descent are included in the total of two hours and 30 minutes, of which 50 minutes are for the mausoleum and viewpoint.
The mausoleum is open daily from 9:00-18:00 between 15 April and 15 November. The €8 ticket also includes Njegos’s birthplace. Day admission to Lovcen National Park costs a separate €3.
Njegos’s birthplace in Erakovici
In the stone house in Erakovici, ethnographic objects and handcrafted weapons give a sense of life in a wealthier Njegusi household in the early 19th century. After the monumental memorial on Lovcen, the smaller domestic rooms offer a different perspective on Njegos’s home region.
The drive from the mausoleum to the car park in Kopito is estimated at 30 minutes, followed by a walk of about 800 metres to the house. The walk is estimated at 15 minutes in each direction, with half an hour for the collection.
Njegos’s birthplace is open daily from 9:00-17:00 in summer. The visit is included in the €8 mausoleum ticket. The car stays in the car park in Kopito, with the rest of the approach following a local road through the village on foot.
Lunch in Njegusi
Njegusi is known for its cured ham and cheese. At Kod Pera on Bukovica, these are served in an old family-run tavern with terraces beneath the trees.
A short drive from the car park leads to Bukovica. With parking and the walk to the tavern, lunch can start around 14:10. There are 60 minutes for the meal and a short rest before returning to Cetinje.
Kod Pera lists parking for guests. Opening hours and your choice of meal need to be confirmed for the date of your visit, particularly for dishes made to order.
Return to Cetinje via Bukovica
The return from Bukovica heads towards Cetinje without descending the Kotor hairpin bends. The drive is estimated at 35 minutes, with another 20 minutes for the walk to the car, parking and the final walk to your accommodation.
Day 3: Rijeka Crnojevica and a boat trip on Lake Skadar
Why this day is worth planning
The river trip suits travellers who enjoy landscapes and want a gentler day between cultural visits. A short boat trip leaves plenty of time for lunch and a walk through the waterside village.
Day details

- Cetinje, the same accommodation
| Part of the day | Activity | Total time |
|---|---|---|
| Morning | The river meander from Pavlova Strana | 1 h 45 min |
| Middle of the day | A private boat trip through the river valley and channels | 2 h 30 min |
| Lunch and afternoon | Riverside lunch and Danilo’s Bridge | 2 h 20 min |
| Afternoon | Return from Rijeka Crnojevica | 1 h |
The river meander from Pavlova Strana
From Pavlova Strana, you can see Rijeka Crnojevica curve around a green hill before continuing towards the open lake.
Starting from Cetinje around 9:30, the drive is estimated at 45 minutes. The approach, a short stay at the viewpoint and a rest bring the total from your accommodation to one hour and 45 minutes.
The prepared navigation goes via Rijeka Crnojevica and avoids the gravel shortcut through Meterizi. The approach is narrow and winding, and the roadside pull-in by the viewpoint is small. Stopping here is only possible if the whole car can stay off the road. The viewpoint pin does not mark a formal car park.
A private boat trip through the river valley and channels
From the boat, the narrow river valley gives way to a more open expanse of lake, then to channels among water lilies. The Open Lake + Amazon trip run by Boat Cruising Vasilije lasts one hour and 20 minutes.
The drive from the viewpoint to Rijeka Crnojevica is estimated at 15 minutes. Including parking, the walk to the boat and half an hour to meet the operator, this schedule fits a departure arranged in advance for around 12:15 and a return around 13:35.
Boat Cruising Vasilije lists €95 per private boat for a group of up to eight people. Lake Skadar National Park admission costs a separate €5 per person. When arranging the trip, confirm the 12:15 time, boarding point by the old bridge and return to the same place. The operator changes or cancels the trip when the weather makes boating unsafe.
Riverside lunch and Danilo’s Bridge
Lunch by the river is a chance to try lake carp. Among the small waterside houses stands Danilo’s stone bridge, built in 1853 in memory of Prince Danilo’s father, with the Mostina house on the left bank.
After disembarking and a short walk, lunch can start around 14:00. There are 80 minutes for the meal and a rest, followed by 45 minutes for the riverbank and bridge.
Return from Rijeka Crnojevica
The final walk to the car, 35-minute drive, parking and walk to your accommodation in Cetinje are estimated at 60 minutes in total. The return is calculated from Rijeka Crnojevica, without another stop at the viewpoint.
Day 4: Lipa Cave, Biljarda and the view from Orlov Krs
Why this day is worth planning
The cave visit and Njegos’s manuscripts give this day a different focus from the Lovcen trip. Lunch and a longer rest separate those visits from the later climb to the view above the city.
Day details
- Start
- Accommodation in Cetinje’s historic centre
- Finish
- Cetinje, the same accommodation
| Part of the day | Activity | Total time |
|---|---|---|
| Late morning | The chambers and formations of Lipa Cave | 2 h |
| Middle of the day | Biljarda and the large relief map | 1 h 45 min |
| Lunch and afternoon | Lunch and a longer rest in Cetinje | 2 h 25 min |
| Late afternoon | The view of Cetinje from Orlov Krs | 1 h 35 min |
The chambers and formations of Lipa Cave
In Lipa Cave, lit passages lead among stalactites, stalagmites and stone columns. Larger chambers and narrower passages change the sense of space, while the temperature of 10-12°C is a marked contrast to a summer day above ground. An operator’s guide leads the visit, with a short train ride in each direction.
The walk to the car, drive and parking are estimated at 30 minutes. Starting around 10:30 brings you to the car park around 11:00. This schedule uses the one-hour tour between 11:30 and 12:30, including 45 minutes in the cave and a total of 15 minutes on the train, returning to the same car park.
The cave tour costs €16.90 for adults, including parking, both train rides and the guide. The operator requires arrival at the car park half an hour before the tour. The approach runs via Belveder towards Lipa Dobrska, and the cave visit calls for a warmer layer of clothing.
Biljarda and the large relief map
Biljarda was Njegos’s home and workplace. Its collection includes personal belongings, books and the original manuscript of The Mountain Wreath. In the courtyard, a large relief map presents Montenegro’s mountains and valleys as a three-dimensional model made in 1917.
From the cave, the drive leads to the car park on Trg Umjetnika, followed by a walk to Biljarda. That approach and entry are estimated at 35 minutes. There are 45 minutes for Biljarda itself, 20 minutes for the Relief Map, and five minutes for the walk between them.
Biljarda and the Relief Map of Montenegro are open daily from 9:00-17:00 between 15 April and 15 November. The €5 adult ticket also includes the Relief Map of Montenegro.
Lunch and a longer rest in Cetinje
The walk from Biljarda to lunch in the centre is estimated at ten minutes, so the meal can start around 14:25. There is an hour for lunch, followed by an hour and 15 minutes of rest before the walk to Orlov Krs.
The view of Cetinje from Orlov Krs
The mausoleum of Bishop Danilo stands on Orlov Krs, above Cetinje Monastery. From this terrace, the city can be seen in its mountain setting, with the roofs of the historic centre beneath the surrounding slopes.
After the rest, the walk can begin around 16:40. The approach and final walk back to your accommodation are estimated at ten minutes each, the ascent and descent at 20 minutes each, and time for the view and a rest at 35 minutes.
Day 5: Swimming at Mogren and a walk through Budva Old Town
Why this day is worth planning
After the mountain and museum days, this day leaves plenty of time for the sea. Mogren and the nearby Old Town combine swimming beneath the cliffs with a walk through stone streets behind the walls.
Day details
- Start
- Accommodation in Cetinje’s historic centre
- Finish
- Cetinje, the same accommodation
| Part of the day | Activity | Total time |
|---|---|---|
| Morning and early afternoon | Mogren: four hours of swimming and rest | 5 h 25 min |
| Lunch | Lunch and a rest by the Old Town | 2 h |
| Afternoon and return | Budva Old Town and the return to Cetinje | 2 h 15 min |
Mogren: four hours of swimming and rest
Mogren lies beneath steep cliffs, close to the Old Town but tucked away from the town waterfront. Its sandy coves and coastal footpath have a different setting from the long, open shore of Budva Bay. Swimming is at Mogren I, the first cove on the path from the Old Town.
Starting around 9:00, the walk to the car, 45-minute drive, parking at Zetafilm and walk to the beach are estimated at one hour and 25 minutes. The beach stay is a separate four hours, approximately from 10:25 to 14:25, making the total for this activity five hours and 25 minutes.
The car stays at Zetafilm car park, with the walk to Mogren passing the Old Town and Hotel Avala. Access along the coast depends on sea conditions and whether the path beside the cliffs is passable.
Lunch and a rest by the Old Town
The walk from Mogren to lunch by the Old Town is estimated at 15 minutes. Lunch can start around 14:40, with an hour for the meal and another 45 minutes to rest before the walk. The recommendations for where to eat in Budva can help you choose a place.
Budva Old Town and the return to Cetinje
Inside Budva’s walls, narrow streets open onto small squares, while religious buildings from different periods cluster near the seaward end. Around the Church of Saint John and Santa Maria in Punta, the town opens towards the sea, bringing the stone facades and coast into the same walk.
The walk around the exteriors is estimated at 60 minutes, starting around 16:25. Time inside the Citadel, museums or individual churches is not included.
The walk back to the car park is estimated at 15 minutes. With a 45-minute drive, parking and the final walk to your accommodation, the return takes one hour and 15 minutes.
Planning a summer stay
Combined museum ticket
The National Museum’s combined ticket costs €20. The published price list does not state how long it remains valid, so the ticket office needs to confirm whether it covers the museum visits spread across three days of this stay.
Questions about five days in Cetinje
Is five days too long for Cetinje?
The historic centre alone does not need all five days. This stay uses Cetinje as a base: the city’s museum visits are split into two separate days, while the rest of the time is for Lovcen and Njegusi, a river boat trip, Lipa Cave and a full beach day in Budva.
Do you need a car for this itinerary?
Day one is on foot from the historic centre. The other four use a hire car, with separate walks between parking and the attractions, and a private boat on day three. The boat trip starts and finishes in Rijeka Crnojevica, so you also return to Cetinje by car that day.
How demanding is the climb to the Njegos Mausoleum?
From the upper road access, 461 steps lead through a tunnel to the mausoleum. In this schedule, the ascent and descent are estimated at 20 minutes each, separate from 50 minutes for the interior and viewpoint. These are the author’s estimates.
