Black Lake, Savin Kuk and the lakes of the Jezerska Plateau from Žabljak
Black Lake lies among conifers beneath the rocky slopes of Međed, while Vražje and Riblje sit in open pasture. This day trip combines those contrasting lakeshores with medieval stecci tombstones and a seasonal ride on the first Savin Kuk chairlift.

Why set aside a day for this trip
Black Lake is one of the places that draw visitors to Durmitor, but a visit need not stop at its busiest shore. This trip leaves time for the full woodland walk below Međed, after the open plateau lakes and a ride on the two-seat chairlift at Savin Kuk. On a short circuit around Žabljak, you see very different landscapes and two UNESCO sites, with only about an hour and a half of driving.

The chairlift plan depends on the first lift running and a confirmed return ride. The current parking fee at Savin Kuk and any separate charges at the plateau stops have not been confirmed.
Route, visits and breaks
Times include all walks to and from the car, the return ride on the first chairlift when it runs, lunch and a 35-minute buffer. The full plan depends on seasonal chairlift operation and a passable trail around the entire lake.
01Across the Jezerska Plateau to Bare Žugića
30 min driving · 35 min for the visit, walk in and back

Set off from Žabljak in the morning on the old paved road towards Vražje and Riblje lakes, then continue to Bare Žugića. You will return to the lakes after this first visit. The prepared directions end at the road access to the burial ground and do not take the car across the meadow among the monuments. Stopping here depends on finding an available space clear of the carriageway. If there is no space at the approach, do not leave the car in the narrow traffic lane.
Walk in from the road, follow the visible rows of stecci and look at some of the more finely worked tombstones in the central and northern sections. Allow 35 minutes for the visit, including the walk in and back to the car.
02Grčko Groblje and the shore of Riblje Lake
10 min driving · 1 h 10 min for both sites and the return

Continue along the same local paved road to Riblje Lake. The stopping point is beside the road between the lake and the grassy rise with the Grčko Groblje burial ground. The directions do not take the car onto the archaeological site. There is no confirmed formal car park here, so use only an available roadside space that leaves the road clear.

Walk up the low grassy rise to the tombstones first. After looking around, return to the road and cross towards the northern shore of Riblje Lake. The 70-minute allowance covers both sites, the approaches and the return to the same car.
03A short drive to Vražje Lake
5 min driving · 45 min at the lake, including the walk back

From Riblje Lake, continue towards Vražje, whose pale water comes into view below the road among grassy slopes. Leave the car at the roadside approach, and do not drive down the tracks across the pasture to the water.
Walk down to the shore, follow a short stretch on that side of the lake, then return to the car. Allow around 45 minutes for the approach, time by the water and the walk back. After the open plateau countryside, drive on towards Virak and the foot of Savin Kuk.
04Savin Kuk’s first chairlift and lunch at the base
20 min driving · 2 h 30 min for parking, the chairlift, lunch and rest

The driving destination is the base of the ski centre, beside Durmitorsko Sijelo. This stage uses only the first two-seat chairlift, Savin Kuk I, which climbs to roughly 1,907 metres. Before setting off, ask the operator whether the first lift is running, which ticket you need for both directions and when the last descent leaves. The general summer timetable lists the last departure from the base at 15:00 and a descent time of 15:30. The centre’s 16:30 closing time does not mean you can still board then.
Get off at the first lift’s upper station, take a short break nearby and return to the base on the same lift. Allow 75 minutes for parking, both rides and the short stop. The second lift and the 2,313-metre summit are outside this plan. If the first chairlift is not running, spend more time at the lakes. Hiking to the summit requires several hours and a separate plan.
The summer 2026 price list gives an adult fare of €10 for Savin Kuk I. It does not say whether this covers both directions, so confirm the return journey when buying your ticket.

After riding down, stop for lunch at Durmitorsko Sijelo, the restaurant beside the lower station. You do not need another drive for the meal, which comes before the day’s longest walk around Black Lake.
Allow about an hour and fifteen minutes to order, eat and rest. The restaurant serves local cuisine and has a terrace at the foot of the mountain. Outside the summer season, check that the kitchen is open before you arrive.
05The full walk around Black Lake
20 min driving · 2 h 30 min for the full walk from the car park and back

From the foot of Savin Kuk, drive back towards Žabljak and on to the public car park on the approach to Black Lake. From there, walk to the main shore and start the lake circuit.
Allow two and a half hours for the whole visit. The lakeside circuit is about 3.5 kilometres. Adding the walk from the car park and back brings the total to about 4.8 kilometres. The trail goes through woodland, with roots, rocks and some short, steeper sections. Take the full circuit only when it is open and passable. If a stretch is closed, flooded or damaged, retrace your steps rather than cross an obstacle just to complete the loop.
Day admission to Durmitor National Park costs €5 per person. Parking is charged separately by the hour, with any part of an hour charged in full. The published parking operator’s tariff lists €3 per hour from June to the end of September and €1.20 from October to the end of May for Black Lake. Allow for three chargeable hours for this visit, costing €9 in summer or €3.60 during the other period.
06Back to Žabljak
10 min driving
Allow about ten minutes to drive from the Black Lake car park to Žabljak. Including all visits, lunch and a 35-minute buffer, the trip takes roughly nine to ten and a half hours. The full plan assumes the first chairlift is running and the chosen approaches and lakeside trail are open.
Trip highlights
01Bare Žugića and its rows of medieval tombstones
Bare Žugića is the larger of the two nearby burial grounds in this part of the Jezerska Plateau. Its inventory records 300 stecci, many of them low stone blocks, some partly sunk into the ground.
The more finely worked chest-shaped stones and gabled tombstones, whose tops resemble a roof, are found mainly in the central and northern sections. Their decorations include crosses, bands and bows with arrows, as well as figurative scenes on some stones.
The burial ground is part of the transboundary property “Stecci - Medieval Tombstone Graveyards”, inscribed on the UNESCO list in 2016. It comprises selected medieval cemeteries in Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia and Serbia.
02Grčko Groblje above Riblje Lake
Grčko Groblje near Novakovići lies on a low grassy hill above Riblje Lake. A survey recorded 49 stecci within about 500 square metres. From the hill, the tombstones, lake and open Jezerska Plateau landscape can be seen together.
Decorations have been recorded on 22 stones. Alongside twisted bands, plant motifs and arcades, they include crosses, shields, a man with a sword and hunting scenes. Some tombstones lean or have sunk into the soil, while cracks and lichen make the carvings harder to recognise.
Based on the cemetery’s appearance, decoration and setting, researchers associate it with the local population of the 14th century and the first half of the 15th. The idea that noble families were buried here remains an interpretation, and no inscriptions have been recorded on these stones. Like Bare Žugića, Grčko Groblje has been part of the UNESCO stecci property since 2016.
03Riblje Lake on the open Jezerska Plateau
Riblje Lake fills a shallow basin among pastures, about a kilometre by road from Vražje Lake. The land around the water is open, with a rural road and distant mountain outlines. Grčko Groblje stands on a rise about 200 metres north-west of the lake.
The lake is glacial in origin, with a maximum depth of about five and a half metres. Its shoreline is about 840 metres long, but this visit stays on the northern section beside the burial ground.
04Vražje Lake and its pale water among the pastures
Vražje Lake is larger and deeper than neighbouring Riblje Lake, with a maximum depth of about 11 metres. Its shore has no dense conifer forest. Grassy slopes run almost to the water, so its blue and turquoise tones are visible from the approach road. The water is lighter and clearer beside the shore, becoming darker towards the middle.
Folklore links the unusual name to devils said to have built a palace of ice in the lake. In another story, a red-coated winged horse lives in the water, which is why Vražje is also described as the birthplace of winged horses.
05Savin Kuk and the first chairlift
Savin Kuk is a 2,313-metre peak on the eastern side of the Durmitor massif. The ski resort in Virak bears the same name, but its base, chairlift stations and summit are separate destinations.
The first lift is an open two-seater that climbs through wooded slopes from the base to about 1,907 metres.
A legend connects the name Savin Kuk with Saint Sava and the Savina Voda spring. The spring is near the second chairlift, at around 2,212 metres, so the first lift does not take you there.
06Black Lake, two connected lakes beneath Međed
Black Lake (Crno jezero), at around 1,418 metres above sea level, consists of Veliko Jezero and Malo Jezero, the larger and smaller lakes. They are joined by a narrow channel that can dry out at low water. From the main shore, you look across Veliko Jezero, the forest around the water and the rocky slopes of Međed. According to the Žabljak Tourism Organisation, Black Lake takes its name from the reflection of the dense conifer forest.
Snowmelt and springs, including Čelina, feed the lake. The Žabljak Tourism Organisation describes its drainage as a bifurcation, with water from the same lake flowing through underground routes towards both the Tara and the Piva.
Questions about this trip
Does the chairlift reach the Savin Kuk summit?
The first lift ends at about 1,907 metres, while the summit is at 2,313 metres. This trip uses only the first lift, and only when it is running and you can ride down the same way. The second lift and the hike to the summit are not included in the day.
Is the full circuit of Black Lake an easy walk?
The walk to the main shore is much easier than the full lakeside circuit. Including the walk from the car park and back, the full route is about 4.8 kilometres, with roots, rocks and some steeper sections. If that terrain does not suit you or the trail is closed, walk along an open stretch of shore and return the same way.
Does national park admission include the chairlift and parking?
No. Chairlift tickets and parking are paid for separately from daily national park admission. Seasonal hourly charging applies to the public car park at Black Lake, with any part of an hour charged in full. Check the parking fee at the base of Savin Kuk with the chairlift operator.
