Drive from Žabljak to Pošćenje, Komarnica and the Nevidio Canyon entrance
The two Pošćenje Lakes lie among village houses and meadows, while nearby the Komarnica narrows between the cliffs of Nevidio. This day trip from Žabljak combines a walk through Pošćenje, lunch beside a lake and the riverside path to the canyon entrance. You explore the Komarnica on foot, without entering the water-filled section of Nevidio.

Why set aside a day for this trip
Choose this trip for a day of walking and relaxing beside the water, without a demanding mountain climb. Pošćenje also offers a short cultural visit to the church grounds and their medieval stecci tombstones. Around an hour and 40 minutes of driving leaves most of the day for visits, rest and lunch.

The published material for the September 2026 decision lists €2 for individual park admission and €1 for a day of parking for a standard car. The government has adopted the decision, but its effective date and whether these fees are being collected for this visit outside the canyon have not been confirmed. Check the current amounts and rules with the park management. Day parking at the restaurant must be arranged separately.
Route, visits and breaks
The durations include the full return through Pošćenje, the walk beside the Komarnica back to the parking area, lunch and one 35-minute allowance for delays. The plan is for a day without snow or heavy rain, with parking arranged at the restaurant and the dry approach to Nevidio open.
01From Žabljak to Pošćenje and both lakes
45 min driving · 10 min for parking · 45 min for the outward village walk

Set off in the morning on the main road from Žabljak towards Šavnik, then turn off for Pošćenje. The prepared navigation leads to the Eco Village Nevidio restaurant. Before the trip, use the property’s contact page to arrange day parking during your walk and lunch, including any fee.
From the restaurant, follow the village road towards the Church of the Dormition of the Mother of God and the stecci beside it. Look around the grounds, then continue to a view of the southern lake, followed by the northern one. The furthest point is around 1.2 kilometres from the restaurant. Part of the approach to the northern lake is unpaved and is covered on foot. Marsh vegetation grows along the shores, so the lakes are viewed from the village approaches. A full circuit along the water is not part of this walk.
02Back through the village for lunch beside the lake
30 min return walk · 1 h 15 min for lunch and returning to the car

From the northern lake, walk back through the village to the restaurant, a further 1.1 kilometres or so. This completes the full walk of around 2.3 kilometres, returning to the same car.
Eco Village Nevidio has a restaurant overlooking the lake, and the operator says it uses ingredients supplied by local households. The restaurant menu includes local trout served with boiled potatoes.
The restaurant’s published opening hours are 08:00 to 22:00. Separate kitchen hours are not listed. When arranging parking, check whether lunch will be served on the date of your visit, especially outside the main season.
03The entrance parking area and a view towards Skakavica
10 min driving · 10 min for parking · up to 20 min for the view and return

From Pošćenje, take the short drive to the entrance parking area for Dragišnica and Komarnica Nature Park. Both short walks from here end back at the same parking area.
The paved road bridge over the Grabovica is around a hundred metres from the parking area. Before setting out, ask the park staff whether Skakavica can be seen that day from a permitted spot beside the bridge and whether that spot can be reached without walking in the carriageway. Include this short walk there and back, around 200 metres in total, only if both points are confirmed. Otherwise, skip this stop. The plan does not include descending to the foot of the waterfall or walking along the Grabovica riverbed. Skakavica is an intermittent waterfall, so its main flow may be absent during dry periods.
04Beside the Komarnica to the Nevidio Canyon approach
1 h for the full riverside walk and approach, including the return

Ask the staff which footbridges and sections of the approach are currently open and dry. The proposed walking circuit starts at the entrance parking area, crosses the northern footbridge and follows the path beside the Komarnica towards the canyon entrance. The full circuit, returning over the lower footbridge and along the established path to the same parking area, is around 800 metres. Use the footbridges rather than the ford through the river.
Pause beside the riverbed in the open area, then continue only as far as the last dry, open point before the pool at the canyon entrance. From there, look towards the gap where the river disappears between the cliffs. If part of the approach is flooded or closed, turn back sooner along the dry path you have already used. The old road bridge above Nevidio is excluded from the walk and must not be crossed. Continuing through the water-filled canyon requires a separately arranged canyoning trip with a guide and equipment.
05Return to Žabljak
45 min driving
From the entrance parking area, return through Pošćenje to the main road and continue to Žabljak. Before setting out, check road conditions, especially after heavy rain or the first snowfall.
This route stays around Pošćenje and the Nevidio entrance area. The drive farther up the Komarnica valley towards Kozarica is excluded because of warnings published in July 2026 about the poor condition of the road bridges there.
Trip highlights
01Pošćenje and its two lakes
The Pošćenje Lakes lie among the houses and meadows of Pošćenje village. The Šavnik tourist organisation describes them as two lakes of glacial origin. Reeds and other marsh plants grow along their edges, with the open water giving way to marshy shores in places.
According to the area’s protection study, Veliko Lake drains towards the Komarnica, while water from Malo Lake flows through the Gnjionik stream towards the Bukovica.
The Church of the Dormition of the Most Holy Mother of God and the stecci stand on Banovina hill, within the village’s active cemetery. According to the Lexicon of the Archaeology of Montenegro, medieval tombstones surround the church, most of them shaped like stone chests, and some stecci have been incorporated into its foundations and walls. As you walk around the outside, look for decorations carved into the stone blocks above the foundations. The monuments were moved and reused during later construction, so their present arrangement does not show the original layout of the medieval graves.
02The Komarnica and the entrance to Nevidio Canyon
The Komarnica rises below Durmitor’s southern slopes, in the Dobri Do area. Its upper valley includes meadows and settlements, and the Grabovica joins the river at the entrance to Nevidio. Near this confluence, the open ground beside the river gives way to the canyon’s limestone walls.
At Nevidio, the cliffs narrow above the river, hiding the course ahead. From outside the canyon, you can see where this narrowing begins.
The park states that the passages inside narrow to less than one metre in places. For a long time, the constrictions, pools and cascades made the canyon difficult to traverse. It was first crossed in full in 1965.
03Skakavica on the Grabovica River
Skakavica drops over a rock face around 80 metres high on the Grabovica, a tributary of the Komarnica.
The park states that Skakavica flows during snowmelt and heavy rain, when the surrounding springs swell. In the dry part of the year, the view may consist mainly of rock and greenery rather than a full waterfall.
Questions before this day trip
How much walking is involved without canyoning?
The main itinerary includes around 3.1 kilometres of walking, with approximately 2.3 kilometres through Pošćenje and 800 metres beside the Komarnica. Both walks include the return to their starting point. If access to the Skakavica viewing spot is confirmed, the total walking distance increases to around 3.3 kilometres.
Does the route cross the damaged Komarnica and Kozarica bridges?
No. Both bridges mentioned in the warnings published in July 2026 are on the upper section of the valley, which is excluded from this day trip. The drive back from the Nevidio entrance area goes through Pošćenje.
Can you take this day trip in May?
For a visit in May, check for snow on the approach road and confirm that the dry walking section at Nevidio is open on your intended date. When high water levels increase the flow at Skakavica, they can also restrict the walk beside the Komarnica.
