A day trip by car from Budva

Ostrog by car from Budva

Ostrog is one of the most visited monasteries in the Balkans, and its two cave churches preserve frescoes from the 17th century. Saint Basil of Ostrog established the monastery on the site of older cave shrines. His relics draw pilgrims today, while the churches built into the cliff and the views over the Zeta Valley also interest travellers of different faiths. The drive from Budva goes through Cetinje and Podgorica, with a first visit at Zdrebaonik.

Why set aside a day for this trip

At Ostrog, pilgrimage is still part of daily life: people continue to come to venerate the relics, pray and make religious vows. Visitors can encounter this part of Montenegrin culture in its living setting, alongside the art preserved in the cave churches. It is worth setting aside a day when you want to leave the old towns of the coast and get to know an important place in the country's spiritual life. The longer journey from Budva is worthwhile for a thorough monastery visit, with time for the churches and terraces, rather than a quick photograph before moving on to other distant destinations.

Route, visits and breaks

Times are approximate. The plan includes the drive in both directions, three monastery visits, walking approaches, lunch and about an hour allowed for delays. It assumes access to the higher car park below Upper Ostrog.

01

Leaving Budva and visiting Zdrebaonik

2 h driving · 45 min for the visit

The church and courtyard of Zdrebaonik Monastery
The courtyard of Zdrebaonik Monastery

Leave Budva in the morning and open the prepared route for navigation. The approach goes through Brajici and Cetinje, then through Podgorica and Danilovgrad to Zdrebaonik Monastery in Sekulici. You pass through Cetinje and Podgorica. Zdrebaonik is your first visit. Allow about two hours for the drive.

Leave your car in the car park in front of the monastery courtyard, then walk to the Church of Saint Michael the Archangel. Allow approximately 45 minutes for the visit: enter the church when it is open to visitors, look at the iconostasis and, if you are here to venerate the relics, approach Saint Arsenije's reliquary. After seeing the church, spend time in the courtyard without entering the monastery residences.

Questions before visiting Ostrog

How demanding is the drive to Ostrog from Budva?

Most of the approach goes through Cetinje, Podgorica and Danilovgrad. The more demanding stretch begins after Zdrebaonik and ends with the bends towards the higher car park. The road is paved and does not require an off-road vehicle, but you need to feel confident passing oncoming traffic slowly on a mountain road. If that kind of driving is uncomfortable for you, this independent trip is not a good choice simply because the distance seems manageable.

Can we drive to Upper Ostrog, and what if we are travelling with children?

The plan takes you to the higher car park, not to the entrance of the cave churches. An uphill walk and stairs inside the Upper Monastery remain. If access to the car park is closed, you may have to leave your car further down. The road between Lower and Upper Ostrog is approximately three kilometres long, with walking shortcuts through the forest. That full climb is not included in the 12-hour plan and requires extra time, particularly with children or people who find walking difficult.

Is Ostrog worth visiting if we are not coming to venerate the relics?

Yes. People of different faiths visit Ostrog, and the cave churches, 17th-century frescoes and terraces above the valley are particularly worthwhile for visitors interested in culture. Venerating the relics is a religious act that you do not have to take part in. Cover your shoulders and knees to enter the churches, and follow the monastery's instructions on photography inside. You are visiting a sacred place where pilgrims are praying at the same time.

Continuing the drive and visiting Upper Ostrog

45 min driving · 30 min parking and walking · 1 h 45 min for the visit

Upper Ostrog built into the rock above a wooded slope
The Upper Monastery in the cliff of Ostroska Greda

From Zdrebaonik, follow the paved uphill road towards Ostrog. Allow about 45 minutes for this stretch. The prepared route takes you to the higher car park below the Upper Monastery. The final climb has sharp bends and places where you need to pass oncoming buses slowly. Staff on site determine access to the car park. Do not expect to drive to the church entrances themselves.

From the higher car park, continue uphill to the monastery on foot. Allow half an hour for parking and the approach, with another hour and 45 minutes for Upper Ostrog. Begin at the Church of the Presentation of the Virgin Mary, which holds the relics of Saint Basil. Then take the stairs to the Church of the Holy Cross and the terraces overlooking the Bjelopavlici Plain. The visit includes both churches and the terraces. A longer queue at the Church of the Presentation uses some of the day's allowance for delays.

This plan applies to an ordinary day when access to the higher car park is permitted. If your car has to stay at Lower Ostrog, the full climb on foot requires considerably more time and effort. Around Saint Basil's feast day on 12 May, check the current traffic announcement: under previous feast-day arrangements, police allowed the Ostrog-Zdrebaonik road to be used only for the descent. Under those conditions, you cannot use this outbound route without changing it.

Descending and visiting Lower Ostrog

15 min walking downhill · 15 min driving · 1 h for the visit

The Church of the Holy Trinity in the courtyard of Lower Ostrog
The Church of the Holy Trinity at Lower Ostrog

After visiting the Upper Monastery, return to your car. Allow about 15 minutes to walk down to the higher car park. Drive down to Lower Ostrog and park, allowing approximately another 15 minutes.

About an hour is set aside for Lower Ostrog. Visit the Church of the Holy Trinity and look around the courtyard, then continue to the Church of Saint Stanko the New Martyr above the lower complex. His relics are kept there. These churches add another part of the monastery to the cave churches you have already visited: the lower level has a spacious courtyard and the monastic community's residences. Follow the monastic community's guidance on entering the churches during services.

Lunch and views at Sokoline

10 min driving · 1 h 15 min for lunch and a rest

The terrace of Sokoline restaurant overlooking the valley
The terrace of Sokoline restaurant

From Lower Ostrog, drive down to Sokoline restaurant, on the same approach you will follow towards Zdrebaonik. The drive to the restaurant takes approximately 10 minutes. Allow about an hour and 15 minutes for lunch and a rest before the longer return journey to Budva.

The terrace faces the monastery and the Bjelopavlici Plain. After seeing Ostrog close up, you can take in its position in the cliff and the slope you climbed to reach it. The restaurant also has an indoor dining room with large windows facing the valley, so the view is not limited to sitting outside.

Returning to Budva through Podgorica and Cetinje

About 2 h 20 min driving

From Sokoline, continue down the approach towards Zdrebaonik and Danilovgrad, then through Podgorica, Cetinje and Brajici to Budva. Zdrebaonik now serves only as a waypoint on the return route, without a second visit. Allow about two hours and 20 minutes for the full return drive.

With all visits, approaches, lunch and about an hour allowed for delays, the trip takes approximately 12 hours. This plan assumes access to the higher car park on a day without a feast-day gathering. Traffic on the approach to Budva or a longer queue at the monastery can delay your return. For that reason, do not add a visit to Cetinje or Podgorica to this day.

Trip highlights

01

Zdrebaonik and the relics of Saint Arsenije

Zdrebaonik stands in Sekulici, on the left bank of the Zeta near Danilovgrad. The monastery is dedicated to Saint Michael the Archangel, and its church holds the relics of Saint Arsenije of Srem, the second Serbian archbishop and successor to Saint Sava. The reliquary is the focus of veneration and the reason believers combine a visit to Zdrebaonik with a journey to Ostrog.

The present church was built in 1818. There are not enough reliable written records to establish the origins of the first monastery, so traditions about its medieval beginnings should not be confused with the date of the existing church. The church and residences around the courtyard form a convent today, home to a community of nuns since 1991.

One distinctive feature inside is the iconostasis from the early 20th century, the work of the Djinovski brothers. Its decoration is not carved wood: the masonry structure was decorated in plaster, with vine motifs.

02

Upper Ostrog and Saint Basil's cave churches

Saint Basil founded Ostrog in the 17th century, on a site where older cave shrines had existed and hermits had lived. Looking at the monastery in the cliff, it helps to know that the natural caves are more than a shelter behind the present facade: the churches were created inside them, and the rock remains part of their interiors.

Saint Basil served as metropolitan of Zahumlje during Ottoman rule, at a time of insecurity in the hinterland. He spent the final years of his life at Ostrog, where he died in 1671. His relics are kept in the Church of the Presentation of the Virgin Mary. Their veneration keeps Ostrog a living place of pilgrimage.

The Church of the Presentation occupies a cave on the lower level of the Upper Monastery. Its 17th-century frescoes include figures of Saint Sava, Emperor Constantine and Empress Helena. The stone interior remains visible alongside the painted surfaces.

The Church of the Holy Cross stands on the higher level. An inscription records its construction by the monk Isaija in 1665, with Saint Basil's blessing, and its painting by Radul in 1667. Radul also painted on the natural rock surfaces. This makes the shape of the cave part of understanding the frescoes: the painter adapted his compositions to a space without the usual flat walls of a church.

Stairs and passages connect the churches with the terraces. From them, the view opens onto the Bjelopavlici Plain, while the rock immediately above and beside the buildings shows how closely the monastery is tied to Ostroska Greda. The Ostrog vine grows on the upper terrace. Monastic tradition links it to the place where Saint Basil died.

03

Lower Ostrog, the Holy Trinity and Saint Stanko

Lower Ostrog stands on a plateau below the cave monastery. Its central church is the Church of the Holy Trinity, built in the 19th century. The residences and courtyard around it show the part of the complex where the monastic community lives and welcomes pilgrims. After the steep approach to Upper Ostrog, the visit here continues among separate buildings and churches on the plateau.

The Church of Saint Stanko the New Martyr stands above the lower complex. It was consecrated in 2004, when his relics were transferred there from the Upper Monastery. They are the hands of Saint Stanko, a boy remembered in church tradition as a martyr for the Christian faith.

From the courtyard, look at Upper Ostrog high in the rock. The view from the Lower Monastery connects the cave churches with the plateau, churches and residences you are now visiting.
