Day-by-day itinerary
Start with Cetinje, then follow each day as a lived itinerary with clear stops, bases and what to do next. Longer routes need small decisions, quiet landings and clear places where you stop adding more.
Day 1Cetinje to Kolasin via Moraca Canyon (Full day)Start in Cetinje with a compact city walk, then follow the Moraca route north. Kolasin is a quiet base that makes the next morning easy, so pace and parking matter.Full day | Sleep in Kolasin
Begin with a calm stroll through Cetinje Old Town. Park near the royal complex and walk to the main square, then to the National Museum. Leave the city before noon to keep the day light and avoid cruise traffic in the afternoon.
Use Podgorica as the practical hinge before the Moraca Canyon road. Stop once for fuel, a simple lunch and water refills, then keep moving north instead of adding a second mountain detour. This keeps Lovcen for the final day and protects daylight for Kolasin.
Stop at Moraca Monastery and a signed overlook along the canyon. This is a short, calm pause to stretch legs and rehydrate water supplies. Leave with the canyon glow still in your eyes and head towards Kolasin.
Arrive in Kolasin while daylight remains. Check in, stretch, and have a light dinner. This base makes Day 2 a smooth mountain transfer, avoiding a long stretch after a day of driving.
Day 2Biogradska Gora and Tara valley (6-7h)Forest and river dominate today. Biogradska Gora gets the quiet morning, Tara valley gives the road a grand feel, and Zabljak becomes the mountain anchor for the Durmitor day.6-7h | Sleep in Zabljak
Enter Biogradska Gora early when the forest breathes slow and the lake path is easy to enjoy. The loop resets the pace after canyon driving, with water and simple walking. Leave before the day starts stealing time from Zabljak transfer.
Cruise Tara valley with measured viewpoints, not every roadside stop. Make Mojkovac the hinge day, not a distraction, and arrive in Zabljak with daylight for check-in and dinner. This keeps the mountain rhythm intact.
Soft landing in Zabljak after the forest and river day. Check in, feel the cooler air and save any long walk for Day 3 when Durmitor shines. The base here supports the next highland stretch.
Day 3Durmitor ring and Black Lake (6-8h)Durmitor deserves a day dedicated to its ring and lake. The loop reveals the scale and the calm, but avoid overloading the day with side detours. Keep pace with the mountain.6-8h | Sleep in Zabljak
Tackle the Durmitor ring with time for Sedlo and Prutas viewpoints and a meadow stop. The road, weather and lighting set the pace, so resist chasing every side track. This is the big mountain chapter, not a rush.
Return towards Zabljak and circle Black Lake. The clear water adds pause for breath and a calm pace. Sip coffee by the water and keep the evening flexible for a relaxed dinner.
Day 4Tara bridge, Piva and Niksic (6-7h)This is the muscular driving day, with the Tara bridge, Piva and Niksic on the map. Start early and keep the stops focused, because the beauty here can easily eat into the day.6-7h | Sleep in Niksic
Reach the Tara Bridge before it gets crowded and enjoy a clean walk across the span. The canyon view is enough here. The stop should be a pause, not a full activity. Save appetite for Piva and the road ahead.
Travel through Piva canyon with a calm pace. Pluzine is the lake pause rather than a long stop. The road is dramatic and can feel narrow, so plan fuel and daylight accordingly before turning towards Niksic.
End with a short waterfront pause at Krupac Lake after the Tara and Piva drive. Keep it simple with a shoreline walk, water refill and early dinner plan in Niksic. This finish preserves energy for Ostrog tomorrow and avoids adding another late detour.
Day 5Ostrog Monastery and on to Kotor (5-6h)Morning at Ostrog, then a measured drive to the Bay. This day works when the monastery is tranquil and the Bay arrival feels like a reward, not another rushed visit.5-6h | Sleep in Kotor
Visit Ostrog with respectful dress and water. The final approach requires patience and calm. Park lower when the upper road is busy and follow the marked access route for the last section. Let the place breathe rather than rushing photos.
After Ostrog, drive straight to the Bay and make Kotor the evening landing. Arrive cleanly, park once and let the first Bay night feel light. Save the old town climb for cooler hours later.
Day 6Kotor and Perast (Full day)Keep the car quiet around the Bay today. Kotor shines in the cooler hours and Perast offers calm water tones. Plan parking with care to avoid late returns.Full day | Sleep in Kotor
Enter Kotor early, before heat and cruise traffic tighten the lanes. Walk the squares first, then climb only as far as the day honestly allows. Parking is easier with an early start.
Move to Perast when Kotor has given you enough stone and stairs. A short boat visit then time to sit by the water and let the Bay slow down. Perast provides a calmer Bay mood.
Day 7Lovcen, Cetinje and Podgorica return (Full day)Final day climbs out of the Bay towards Cetinje and Podgorica. Lovcen gives the route height, Cetinje adds royal context and Podgorica closes the loop with a simple evening.Full day | Sleep in Podgorica
Begin the climb from the Bay while energy is fresh. Use low gear, give the mausoleum time for wind and steps, and avoid rushing Lovcen. The final stretch earns its shape with the summit and Cetinje both daylighted.
Keep Cetinje to royal core and a final interior stop on the way back. After Lovcen, the town works as a cultural pause, not a long city day. Leave while the road to Podgorica still feels easy.
Return to Podgorica before dinner to avoid parking crunch. The last leg is plain and useful after Lovcen and Cetinje have carried the afternoon. Finish in the city centre for an easy evening.
Before booking, compare the hire price, deposit terms, luggage space and exact collection location.

What weakens a seven-day Cetinje loop
A week gives time for coast, lake and mountains, but only when the bases are chosen with the next road in mind. The best plan protects rest and transfer time.
A charming town can be a poor base if it adds repetitive backtracking. Choose nights by the next road, not just by the view.
Mountain roads can slow you after coastal traffic. Give daylight and avoid stacking hard mountain days after a long coast stop.
Durmitor needs time for weather, walking and slower roads. Do not compress into a quick detour.
Kotor, Budva and Perast can overload the loop when stacked carelessly. Stay coast-focused and leave extra towns for another trip.
Best for these travellers
This route suits travellers who want a week-long loop focused on Cetinje and its surroundings, including Lovcen and the northern highlands. It skips Ulcinj and rafting and uses a steady rhythm to preserve energy for slow-paced days. Shorten it by trimming Kotor wall time first, not by rushing Durmitor or Ostrog.
