Why set aside a day for this trip
Njegoš wished to be buried on Lovćen, above the area where he was born. A visit to his home and a climb to his tomb reveal the ruler and poet's personal connection with the mountain that became a symbol of Montenegro. At Kuk, Lovćen's coastal side also comes into view, with the deeply indented Boka Bay below the slope. Around two and a half hours of driving leave most of the day for visits, the gondola and lunch.

Route, visits and breaks
The times include full visits, walking access in both directions, the return cable car ride, lunch and a 45-minute buffer for the whole day. Plan the full loop for a day with longer daylight hours when the museums and cable car are open, so you can visit the final viewpoint in daylight.
01From Cetinje to Njegoš's birthplace in Njeguši
45 min driving · 15 min for parking and access · 1 h for the museum and village

Set off in the morning towards Njeguši and the hamlet of Erakovići. Open the prepared navigation route. The route starts at the car park by Ćipur and continues to the birthplace, the car park for Kuk and the car park below the mausoleum, in that order. Travelling out via Njeguši and returning along the Lovćen road makes a complete loop without descending onto the Kotor hairpin bends.
Allow around 45 minutes for the first drive. In Erakovići, allow another 15 minutes or so to find a legal place to leave the car and walk to the house. The navigation point marks the museum, rather than a confirmed public car park. Allow 45 minutes for the museum itself and another 15 for a short walk among the surrounding village houses. The birthplace is open seasonally from 15 April to 15 November, from 9:00 to 17:00.
02Kuk and a return cable car ride above Boka Bay
25 min driving · 30 min for parking and walking both ways · 1 h 30 min for the cable car and the view

Allow around 25 minutes to drive from Njeguši to the car park on the approach to Kuk. Leave the car up on the Lovćen side. From the marked access point, the terminal is approximately 700 metres away on foot. A total of 30 minutes is allowed for parking and walking both ways. The operator lists free parking with 60 spaces by the upper station.
Buy a return ticket and ride from Kuk to Dub, then back to Kuk. Each ride takes around 11 minutes. At Dub, you leave the gondola and board again for the ascent. An hour and a half is allowed for the two rides, boarding and the view from the upper station. Before setting off, check whether the cable car is running. Strong winds can suspend the service.
03Lunch at Forza Kuk, with no extra driving
1 h 15 min for lunch

Lunch is planned at Forza Kuk, by the upper cable car station. After the ride, you can stay on the terrace and look out over the bay before continuing to the mausoleum. Allow around an hour and 15 minutes for a meal and a rest. The walk back to the car is already included in the time for access to Kuk.
The restaurant accepts lunch reservations. Prices are at the higher end, and guest experiences with the service are mixed. When reserving, check how long service is expected to take, as the climb to the mausoleum follows lunch.
04Climbing to the mausoleum and visiting the viewpoint
25 min driving · 15 min for parking and access · 2 h for the mausoleum, steps and viewpoint

From Kuk, allow around 25 minutes of mountain driving to the car park below Njegoš Mausoleum, plus another 15 minutes for parking and access. Continue from the car park to the monument on foot.
Allow a full two hours for the 461 steps, the mausoleum, the view from the top and the descent. After the tunnel, visit the monumental entrance and the interior of the monument, then step onto the stone path towards the viewpoint behind it.
According to the National Museum's current opening schedule, the mausoleum is open from 15 April to 15 November. The published closing time is 18:00, so begin the climb and visit at least two hours earlier.
05Returning to Cetinje along the Lovćen road
45 min driving
From the car park below the mausoleum, return to Cetinje along the Lovćen road through the Ivanova korita area. Around 45 minutes is allowed for the return drive.
Trip highlights
01Njeguši and Njegoš's birthplace
In Erakovići, you enter the stone house where Petar II Petrović Njegoš was born in 1813. The house's appearance and ethnographic objects give a sense of life in a well-off Montenegrin household in the early 19th century. Visiting the house reveals the family setting of the future ruler and poet, before the day's final visit to his monument on Lovćen.
His uncle Petar I built the house in 1779, and the memorial museum opened in 1973. Examples of weapons are displayed alongside objects from everyday life. The birthplace is part of the National Museum of Montenegro.
02The view from Kuk and the cable car to Dub
The upper station at Kuk looks towards Boka Bay from the mountainside above the Kotor hinterland. You see the bay from above, then the settlements, roads and coastline draw closer as you descend.
The cable car route to Dub is approximately 3.9 kilometres long. Kuk is a viewpoint above Boka Bay, while the mausoleum stands on Jezerski vrh, deeper in the mountains. At Kuk, the view takes in the bay's shoreline, while Jezerski vrh overlooks the Lovćen ridges and more distant mountains.
03Njegoš Mausoleum and the viewpoint on Jezerski vrh
Jezerski vrh is the burial place of Petar II Petrović Njegoš, the ruler, bishop and poet whose work is inseparable from Montenegro's cultural history. The present mausoleum opened in 1974, following a design by the sculptor Ivan Meštrović. The decision to build it was made in 1951, on the centenary of Njegoš's death.
At the top of the steps, you emerge in front of an entrance marked by monumental stone figures of Montenegrin women. The main hall contains a seated figure of Njegoš, with an eagle spreading its wings above his head and a vault covered in a gilded mosaic. The crypt holds a marble sarcophagus containing his remains.
Behind the building, a stone path leads to a circular viewpoint. On a clear day, the Lovćen ridges and distant mountain horizons are visible from a height of approximately 1,660 metres. Follow the path to the end and return the same way towards the steps.
Questions before a day trip to Lovćen
Does the cable car go to Njegoš Mausoleum?
No. The upper station is at Kuk, while the mausoleum is on Jezerski vrh. In this plan, you drive between the two as far as the car park, then continue up 461 steps.
Can you start a return ride at Kuk?
Yes. Leave your car by the upper station and use a return ticket to descend to Dub and ride back up. At Dub, leave the gondola and board again. Check the last uphill service in the schedule for your visit date to make sure you can get back to your car.
Does one ticket cover the birthplace, the park and the cable car?
The National Museum lists a combined adult ticket for the mausoleum and Njegoš's birthplace at €8. Entry to Lovćen National Park costs a separate €3. The return cable car ticket is also separate and costs €20 according to the published autumn rates. That makes a total of €31 per adult. Check special categories and any changes to the rates with the operators.
