Day trips by car from Cetinje

Rijeka Crnojevića, Pavlova strana and Lipa Cave by car from Cetinje

Rijeka Crnojevića was once an important Montenegrin port, and today you can explore its stone houses and Danilov most on a walk along the water. Above the town, Pavlova strana reveals the distinctive horseshoe bend of the river around a green hill. From Cetinje, you can combine this area with a guided visit to the underground chambers of Lipa Cave on a single day trip by car.

Why set aside a day for this trip

Obod was Ivan Crnojević’s capital before Cetinje became the capital, while Rijeka Crnojevića later developed into an important trading port. Visiting the hill and the old town therefore offers an insight into two different periods in the area’s history. Lipa Cave and the view of the river bend also reveal the area’s underground and river landscapes. About two hours of driving leave most of the day for visits, walking and lunch.

Map and navigation

A driving trip from Cetinje via Lipa Cave and Meterizi to Rijeka Crnojevića, ending with Pavlova strana and with a separate walk around Obod

Route, visits and breaks

The times include the entire cave tour, the walks to and from each site, the climb to Obod, lunch and a 35-minute buffer for the day. Plan the full itinerary during the longer days, from April until the autumn clock change, with a morning cave visit and the final viewpoint in daylight.

01

A morning visit to Lipa Cave

20 min driving · arrive 30 min early · 1 h for the entire cave tour

Leave Cetinje in the morning and choose the first morning departure for the cave tour. Enter Lipa cave parking in your navigation app and keep the approach via Belveder. The operator warns that a general search for Lipa cave may send you along an alternative road in poorer condition. Allow about 20 minutes to drive from Cetinje to the visitor car park.

Arrive at the car park at least 30 minutes before departure to buy tickets and board the train. The first tour is at 10:00, and boarding for the tourist train closes ten minutes before the tour time. Check the current departure timetable for your visit date.

The complete visit lasts one hour: the train to the entrance, the guided walk and the train back to the car park. Parking and the return train ride are included in the admission ticket.

Rijeka Crnojevića: a waterfront walk and Danilov most

45 min driving · 10 min for parking · 1 h 15 min for the waterfront and bridge

After the cave, return via Belveder to the main road and continue via Meterizi towards Rijeka Crnojevića. Allow about 45 minutes for this section. On the descent, you pass Pavlova strana, but the full visit to that viewpoint comes after lunch. The local approach from Meterizi is narrow, with sections where vehicles need to make room to pass one another.

Roadworks on the Ulići-Rijeka Crnojevića road cause closures lasting several hours until 14 November 2026. Before setting off, check the latest AMSCG road report and the access restrictions at the entrance to the town, even if you are arriving via Meterizi.

The navigation pin marks the approach road, not a confirmed car park. About ten minutes have been allowed to find a permitted place to park and start the walk. Leave the car in town while you explore Rijeka, walk up to Obod and have lunch.

Allow about an hour and 15 minutes for the waterfront, Danilov most and Mostina. Approach the bridge from the riverbank, cross it on foot and look at the exterior of Mostina, the house immediately beside it. The next walking section, up to Obod, starts at the northern end of Danilov most.

03

Walk up to Obod and back to the bridge

1 h 15 min for the climb, exterior visit and descent

From Danilov most, follow the walking route to the Church of Saint Nicholas on Obod. The walk to the church approach is about 650 metres one way. The whole stage, including the climb, the exterior visit and the descent back to the bridge, takes about an hour and 15 minutes.

On the hill, look around the exterior of the church and the site of the former Riječki grad. After your visit, return to the bridge by the same approach. The longer trail towards Obodska Cave is not part of this climb.

04

Lunch at Casarogna, then back to the car

10 min walk to the restaurant · 1 h 15 min for lunch · 5 min back to the car

From the bridge, it is about a ten-minute walk through town to Casarogna Culinary Escape. The restaurant is in a restored family house, and its kitchen uses fish from the lake and seasonal ingredients.

Allow an hour and 15 minutes for the meal itself. Casarogna currently opens Wednesday to Sunday, from 12:00 to 21:00. It is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. After lunch, allow another five minutes to walk back towards the car.

05

A final view from Pavlova strana

15 min driving · 35 min for the approach, view and return to the car

From Rijeka, drive back up the approach road towards Meterizi. Allow about 15 minutes to reach Pavlova strana. The navigation pin leads to the road near the viewpoint. There is a small lay-by beside the viewpoint with room for a few cars, but a space is not guaranteed.

About 35 minutes have been allowed for arriving at the lay-by, the short walk to the view, looking around and returning to the car.

06

Return to Cetinje via Meterizi

35 min driving

From Pavlova strana, continue towards Meterizi, then take the main road towards Cetinje. Allow about 35 minutes of driving for the return.

Trip highlights

01

Lipa Cave and its underground chambers

Lipa Cave is a karst system of passages and chambers in the hinterland of Cetinje. Inside the chambers, you can see hanging stalactites, stalagmites and stone columns. The lighting picks out their outlines against the dark rock and lets you observe the natural forms at close range.

The guided tour follows the main passage, passes through Njegoš Hall and reaches the underground viewpoint called Grad. The entire system of passages and chambers is about 2.5 kilometres long, while the tourist visit is limited to the prepared visitor path.

The cave was already known to explorers in the 19th century, and it opened for organised tourist visits in 2015.

02

Rijeka Crnojevića: the former port and Danilov most

Rijeka Crnojevića developed as a settlement connected with the water, trade and navigation towards Lake Skadar. In the 19th and 20th centuries, it played an important role as a Montenegrin port.

Prince Danilo built the stone Danilov most in 1853 in memory of his father, Stanko. It linked the town with Obod on the other side of the river. The bridge is about 43 metres long and is now crossed on foot. Alongside its two large arches are two smaller openings that reduce the load on the structure. The central pier rests on a rock in the riverbed.

Mostina, the stone house immediately beside the bridge, was also built by Prince Danilo, and its lower part could be reached by boat.

03

Obod and the Church of Saint Nicholas above Rijeka

Obod, also known as Riječki grad, stands on a hill above the upper reaches of the Rijeka Crnojevića. Ivan Crnojević began building the fortified town around 1475, retreating from the threatened Žabljak Crnojevića under Ottoman pressure. The position allowed him to control the approach to Lovćen from Lake Skadar.

The fort contained the ruler’s residence and the Church of Saint Nicholas, and Obod was also the seat of the Metropolitanate of Zeta. According to the Leksikon crnogorskih dinastija, it served as the capital for about seven years.

The fort and its church were destroyed at the end of the 17th century. On a visit today, the stone Church of Saint Nicholas with its bell gable stands out beside the site of the former town.

04

The Rijeka Crnojevića river bend seen from Pavlova strana

From Pavlova strana, the loop of the river wraps around a wooded hill on almost every side. The elevated position lets you see the shape of the bend as a whole, rather than just the stretch of river visible from the waterfront in town.

Lake Skadar National Park includes Pavlova strana among its recommended viewpoints.

Before this trip

Do I need to book the standard tour of Lipa Cave?

For the standard Cave experience tour, the operator says that a reservation is not needed. Tickets can be bought at the ticket office in the visitor car park.

Do I need special footwear or caving equipment for the cave?

Caving equipment is not needed for the standard tour. The operator recommends ordinary trainers or walking shoes and a light jacket, as the cave temperature is around 10-12 °C.

Can I do this full trip in winter?

The regular timetable for Lipa Cave is published for April-November. No regular departures are published for December-March. The cave being open in November does not mean there is enough daylight for this entire itinerary: after the autumn clock change, the final view would come too late in the day. The first cave departure is at 10:00, so leaving earlier by car does not make the whole programme start earlier.
