Cetinje, Lovćen and the cable car: a day trip by car from Tivat

On the Kotor hairpin bends, the Bay of Kotor opens out below the road, while the villages of Njeguši begin beyond Krstac. From Tivat, this climb takes you to the house where Njegoš was born, then to Cetinje's palace and the mausoleum on Jezerski vrh. After Lovćen, a return cable car ride from Kuk brings views of the bay from the gondola.

Why set aside a day for this trip

Njegoš's Mausoleum is one of Montenegro's recognisable destinations, making it worth setting aside a day for the mountains behind the Bay of Kotor. A visit means more when you first get to know his birthplace and Cetinje: objects in the family home and rooms in the palace bring you closer to the lives of the people who shaped the country, giving the history substance beyond the names on monuments. From Tivat, this cultural trip also offers striking panoramas: the climb from the bay on hairpin bends, the mountain viewpoint and views of the Bay of Kotor from Kuk and the gondola.

Route, visits and breaks

Times are approximate and include visits inside, the walks to and from the car parks, steps, lunch, the return cable car ride and a 45-minute buffer for the day. The full plan is intended for a longer day when all the places are open.

01

The morning climb from Tivat to Njegoš's Birth House

1 h 15 min driving · 10 min for parking and the walk · 40 min at the Birth House

The Njeguši plain and mountain slopes around the villages
The Njeguši plain with its surrounding villages

Leave Tivat in the morning through the Vrmac Tunnel towards Troica, then take the old R1 road up the Kotor hairpin bends and through Krstac to Njeguši. The prepared driving route keeps you on this approach via Troica. Tight bends and passing oncoming vehicles are reasons to allow more time than the navigation app's basic estimate.

The first leg ends at the car park beside Njegoš's Birth House in Erakovići. Continue on foot to the museum entrance. Plan to visit after it opens at 09:00. Inside, spend time looking at the hearth, family belongings and the exhibition about Njegoš. The €8 adult ticket also covers his mausoleum, which you visit later, so keep it for that second visit.

Questions before a trip to Cetinje and Lovćen

Does the cable car take you to Njegoš's Mausoleum?

The cable car's upper station is at Kuk, separate from Jezerski vrh, where the mausoleum stands. On this trip, you drive to the car park below the mausoleum, then climb 461 steps. The cable car ride comes later, from Kuk to Dub and back.

Can you start the cable car ride at Kuk?

Yes: drive to Kuk on the Lovćen road and leave the car in the upper car park. Buy a return ticket, descend to Dub, get out of the gondola and board again for the ascent. To collect your car, you need to catch the last ascent from Dub, currently at 19:30. The last descent at 20:00 does not replace that departure.

Is the full itinerary possible in winter?

The mausoleum is closed from 16 November to 14 April, and the cable car operates on a seasonal schedule and may stop running because of the weather. Plan the full trip described here when all the places are open and the day is long enough. A winter visit to Cetinje would be a separate, shorter itinerary, without a promised mausoleum visit or cable car ride.

From Njeguši, continue through Bukovica towards Cetinje. Leave the car in the marked car park near Ćipur, close to the palace and Biljarda. The plan allows 15 minutes for parking and the walks to and from the car.

At King Nikola's Palace, explore the reception rooms, studies and family rooms. Look at the portraits, library and the contrast between the formal furnishings and private rooms. During the season, it is open until 17:00, and adult admission costs €8.

Walk alongside Biljarda to see its stone walls and corner towers. Then head back towards Dvorski trg for lunch.

The lunch stop is Gradska Cetinje, at Dvorski trg 5, near the palace. The restaurant has outdoor seating beside the square, so there is no need to move the car from the central car park. After the museum and walk, allow 75 minutes for a meal and a rest before driving to Lovćen and climbing the mausoleum steps.

Lovćen, the climb to the mausoleum and the view from Jezerski vrh

Njegoš's Mausoleum and the stone path on Jezerski vrh above the mountain landscape
The path behind Njegoš's Mausoleum on Jezerski vrh

From Cetinje, follow the Lovćen road uphill to the car park below Njegoš's Mausoleum. The approach ends at the steps: you cannot drive right up to the monument. Daily admission to Lovćen National Park costs €3 per person and is separate from the museum ticket. At the mausoleum, use the combined ticket bought at the Birth House, without paying again for the same admission.

Allow two hours for the steps, mausoleum, crypt, viewpoint and walk back down. There are 461 steps on the approach. After the caryatids at the entrance and the sculpture of Njegoš, descend into the crypt, then step outside onto the stone path to the circular viewpoint. From here, the surrounding mountain ridges open out before you.

During its official season, from 15 April to 15 November, the mausoleum is open from 09:00 to 18:00. Snow can make access difficult, and fog can obscure the summit views, so check conditions on Lovćen before your trip. After walking back down, return to the car and continue towards Kuk.

Kuk, views of the Bay of Kotor and a return cable car ride

25 min driving · 30 min for parking and both walks · 1 h 30 min for Kuk and the return cable car

Kotor Cable Car gondolas above the mountainside with views of the Bay of Kotor
The cable car ride between Kuk and Dub

From the mausoleum, follow the Lovćen road to the visitor car park for Kuk. Do not follow directions to the lower station at Dub: on this trip, the car stays on the mountain. The operator lists free parking with 60 spaces. The walk from the car park to the upper station is about 700 metres. Half an hour is allowed for parking and the walks there and back.

First buy a return ticket and take the gondola down from Kuk to Dub. Each ride takes about 11 minutes. At Dub, get out of the cabin and board again for the ascent. You cannot stay in the same gondola for the return journey. According to the currently published schedule, the last ascent from Dub to Kuk is at 19:30, so joining the return queue and catching that departure take priority over spending longer at the lower station.

Back at Kuk, there is time for views of the Bay of Kotor and a break. The plan allows 90 minutes for both rides, buying tickets, boarding, enjoying the view and resting, separate from the walks to and from the car park. An adult return ticket currently costs €20. The cable car also depends on weather conditions, so check the schedule and price with the operator before setting out.

Return to Tivat through Krstac and Troica

1 h driving · 45 min buffer for the whole day

From Kuk, follow the road back towards Krstac, then descend the historic hairpin bends to Troica and pass through the Vrmac Tunnel to Tivat. The prepared final leg keeps you on this route, avoiding a shortcut through Mirač.

The full loop is about 105 km and takes approximately 13 to 14 hours. That total includes the museum visits, lunch, steps, the walks to and from each car park, the return cable car ride and a 45-minute buffer for the day. The full plan suits a longer spring or summer day when all the places are open. On shorter days, the return journey may run into dusk or darkness.

Trip highlights

01

Njegoš's Birth House, the hearth and Petrović family life

Njegoš's Birth House is in Erakovići, one of the villages of Njeguši. Petar II Petrović Njegoš, the Montenegrin bishop, ruler and poet, was born here in 1813. The family's stone house became a memorial museum in 1973. The exhibition traces his path from the household where he grew up to his literary and political roles.

The first room contains a bust and portrait of Njegoš, the Petrović family tree and his works. The next room, which belonged to his father Tomo, centres on a hearth with chains and a cooking pot. Low chairs, a small children's table, a cradle and a shelf of dishes show how much family life took place around the cooking area. Traditional costumes, gusle, weapons and a chest belonging to Njegoš's mother have also been preserved.

In the room of his uncle Stijepo, a model of Biljarda, documents and translations of The Mountain Wreath trace his move beyond family life towards Cetinje and literature. The basement brings attention back to household work: a hand mill, milk containers and agricultural tools belong to the same home as the portraits and books upstairs. This closeness between everyday objects and the country's history gives the Birth House its particular value.

02

King Nikola's Palace, state reception rooms and private quarters

King Nikola's Palace, beside Dvorski trg, was completed around 1867. Members of the ruling family moved here from Biljarda, and the museum was founded in 1926. The displays preserve both the official rooms and private quarters, showing how affairs of state and family life shared one roof.

The formal rooms include the king's and queen's reception rooms, the diplomatic salon and the ceremonial dining room. Gilded Venetian mirrors and furniture in various European styles convey the setting in which guests were received. The Indonesian salon stands out, with furnishings inherited from Prince Danilo's old palace.

The king's study and palace library offer another view of the residence through its spaces for work and books. The family dining room, the king's and queen's bedrooms, and the rooms of Princesses Ksenija and Vjera then bring you into the private part of the home. Preserved dishes, textiles and portraits reveal the ruling family through the everyday use of these rooms.

03

Ćipur, Cetinje Monastery and Biljarda on a short town walk

The Church at Ćipur was built in 1890 on King Nikola's orders, on the site of Ivan Crnojević's 15th-century monastery. The remains of the old complex beside the church show that this site was part of Cetinje before the palace buildings that now surround the square. The church contains the tombs of King Nikola, Queen Milena and Ivan Crnojević. A walk outside lets you see the church's setting and surviving remains. Visiting the tombs depends on access to the interior.

Bishop Danilo built Cetinje Monastery in 1701, reusing architectural elements from the demolished Crnojević monastery. It has been restored several times, with the last major restoration taking place from 1925 to 1927. The stone gallery, arcades and bell tower are clearly visible from the courtyard. The old site at Ćipur and this active monastery are therefore two distinct places.

Biljarda dates from 1838, when Njegoš moved state institutions out of the monastery's cramped quarters into a new residence. Its stone walls and corner towers give it the appearance of a fortified home. It takes its name from the billiard table associated with Njegoš's favourite game. Its position beside the monastery shows how the seat of government and religious centre developed side by side.

04

Njegoš's Mausoleum, the sculpture, crypt and stone viewpoint

Njegoš's Mausoleum on Lovćen's Jezerski vrh, at about 1,660 metres above sea level, opened in 1974 to a design by Ivan Meštrović. Its mountain summit setting creates a striking backdrop, but the interior is an important part of the visit: the monument commemorates Njegoš as both poet and ruler.

Two stone caryatids in Montenegrin traditional dress stand at the entrance, conceived as a mother and daughter. In the central hall, a sculpture of Njegoš with an eagle above his head stands beneath a vault covered in gold mosaic. The stone figures and the gleaming vault make this room quite different from the interiors of the family home and palace. In the crypt lies the marble sarcophagus where Njegoš rests.

Behind the mausoleum, a stone path follows the ridge to a circular viewpoint. Stepping from the enclosed halls onto the open summit changes the experience of the monument: the view extends across Lovćen's ridges and distant mountains. Fog can hide this landscape, making the interiors and the panorama two separate reasons to visit.

05

Kuk and the cable car: views of the Bay of Kotor from the mountainside

Kuk is the upper station of the Kotor Cable Car on the slopes of Lovćen, while the lower station is at Dub, above the coastal transport corridor. From Kuk, the view takes in the Bay of Kotor, stretches of water between settlements and the mountains across the bay. Where Jezerski vrh offers a mountain horizon, the coast is the focus of the panorama here.

The gondola crosses the slope between Kuk and Dub in about 11 minutes each way. The view changes as you descend: the water and settlements draw closer, while the steep slopes of Lovćen remain above the cabin.
