Day trip by car from Tivat

Luštica by car from Tivat: Rose, Žanjice and Luštica Bay

Boats in front of stone houses, an old port at the entrance to the Bay of Kotor and coves beyond olive groves give Luštica a different character from Tivat's urban waterfront. In Rose, stroll along the waterfront of the former port, and leave time for the beach at Žanjice. Between them, village roads run past dry-stone walls through a part of the peninsula you cannot see from Tivat's promenade.

Why set aside a day for this trip

Set aside a day for this trip to explore parts of Luštica's coast that a short drive to a single beach would miss. In the old settlements, you pass houses facing the piers, see boats at the jetties and look towards the entrance to the bay from its other shore. There is then time to stay by the sea on the more open Adriatic coast and have lunch above a cove. A car connects these different parts of the peninsula, while the visits themselves are on foot.

Route, visits and breaks

Times are approximate and include the visits, walking access in both directions, swimming, lunch and a half-hour buffer. The full schedule is intended for a longer day during the swimming season.

01

A morning departure from Tivat and a walk through Solila

20 min driving · 10 min for parking and access · 40 min at Solila

Channels and an observation tower in the Tivatska solila reserve
Shallow water and the observation tower at Tivatska solila

Head towards Krtoli in the morning. The first destination on the prepared navigation route is the southern visitor entrance to Tivatska solila, beside the road towards Đuraševići. Here you will find an information point, the reserve entrance and a small designated car park. The northern approach beside the airport is not a stop on this drive.

From the entrance, follow the path along the channels to the observation tower. Spend some time on the platform watching the shallow water, muddy banks and bird activity. Solila attracts more birds during migration and winter than in midsummer, so the visit does not depend on seeing a particular species. Admission is free. After the walk, continue towards Bjelila.

Questions before a day trip to Luštica

Is Luštica Bay reserved for hotel guests?

Day visitors can visit the marina, promenade and restaurants. Visitor parking is separate from reserved residents' spaces. Hotel pools, loungers and some beach facilities have their own conditions of use. A walk along the promenade does not include access to them.

Can you walk to the Blue Cave from Žanjice?

The entrance to the Blue Cave is reached by sea. The walking route from Žanjice to Mirište does not lead to the cave entrance. The Blue Cave requires a separate boat excursion and is not part of this day on land.

Is this trip worthwhile outside the swimming season?

Bjelila's and Rose's waterfronts, the rural landscape and Solila can be visited without swimming. Migration and wintering seasons offer more opportunities to watch birds in the reserve. Outside summer, check Mirišta Restaurant's opening hours and shorten the beach break to suit the daylight. The full schedule shown here is intended for a longer day during the swimming season.

Bjelila's stone waterfront before the drive through the villages

10 min driving · 10 min for parking and access · 30 min in Bjelila

Stone houses and boats on Bjelila's waterfront
The fishing village of Bjelila in Tivat Bay

From Solila, drive through Đuraševići to Bjelila. This navigation leg ends at the car park beside the village, and the visit continues on foot along the stone waterfront. Look at the row of houses with their jetties and boats, then pause where the view opens towards the islands in Tivat Bay.

From Bjelila, continue towards Krašići, then through the villages of Zabrđe and Klinci to Rose. The waypoint in the navigation route keeps you on the chosen road through the villages, rather than connecting the destinations by a shorter alternative approach.

03

Through olive groves to the old port of Rose

45 min driving · 10 min for parking and access · 45 min in Rose

Boats beside the stone pier and waterfront houses in Rose
Boats and the pier at the old port of Rose

The drive from Bjelila via Krašići takes you through villages and olive groves before descending into Rose. Some sections of the village roads require slower driving to pass oncoming cars. The time allowed is therefore longer than the basic navigation estimate. Views near the village of Klinci bring the entrance to the Bay of Kotor into sight before you descend to the port.

Leave the car in the car park at the entrance to Rose. Explore the pier and row of stone houses on foot, looking across the water towards Herceg Novi. Charges and availability can vary between car parks, so this plan does not assume free parking. After the waterfront walk, climb back into the interior of the peninsula towards Žanjice.

Žanjice and a break by the sea

30 min driving · 15 min for parking and access · 1 h 15 min by the sea

The pebble beach in Žanjice cove
Žanjice on the Luštica side of the entrance to the Bay of Kotor

From Rose, take the village road back through the interior of Luštica to Žanjice. Leave the car in the car park above the shore, which also serves the next visit to Mirište. Do not move it to the beach approach or a parking area reserved for the guests of a particular business.

Walk down to the pebble beach and allow time for a waterfront stroll, a rest and swimming in season. The olive groves behind the beach and the Church of Saint John beside the shore give the visit interest beyond swimming. This plan includes an outside view of the church. After the break, set off on foot towards the neighbouring cove of Mirište.

05

A walk to Mirište and lunch above the cove

1 h for the walk, views and return · 1 h 15 min for lunch

The stone waterfront and beach entrance in Mirište cove
The shore of Mirište cove

Walk towards Mirište along the road from the car park, then take the approach to the cove. The prepared walking route is separate from the driving route. It does not assume unrestricted passage across every private waterfront terrace. Allow an hour for the walk there, time by the cove and the return to the car, separately from lunch.

From the shore, look towards the islet of Mala Gospa with its Church of the Presentation and the fort on Cape Arza. The visit stays on land, with a view towards the fortress. Entry to Arza and a boat trip to the island are not part of the plan.

The chosen lunch stop is Mirišta Restaurant, right beside the cove. Its terrace keeps the break by the water, and the meal comes before the final drive to the marina. Before setting out, check whether the restaurant is open that day, especially outside summer. After lunch, return to the Žanjice car park.

06

An afternoon walk along the Luštica Bay marina

40 min driving · 15 min for parking and access · 45 min at the marina

Berths, the breakwater and buildings beside the Luštica Bay marina
The promenade and marina at Luštica Bay

Drive from Žanjice to Luštica Bay through the interior of the peninsula. The prepared route leads to the visitor car park at Marina Village. Reserved residents' spaces and hotel parking are not substitutes for this approach. From the visitor car park, continue to the waterfront on foot.

Walk along the promenade beside the berths, looking at the breakwater and the row of waterfront buildings. Here, the old rural Luštica meets a modern marina, so the end of the day shows another use of the same coast. Hotel pools, loungers and some beach facilities have separate access rules and are not included in this visit.

07

Returning to Tivat by road via Radovići

30 min driving · 30 min buffer for the whole day

From the marina, return to Tivat by road through Radovići and Đuraševići. The final leg does not require a ferry.

Allow approximately 10 to 11 hours for the whole day, including all visits, swimming, lunch and the walks to and from the car parks. The estimate includes a half-hour buffer for slower driving or waiting. The longer beach break shown here is intended for the swimming season. On shorter days, adjust the visit to the available daylight and the opening hours of waterfront restaurants.

Trip highlights

01

Tivatska solila, a wetland habitat away from the urban waterfront

Tivatska solila occupies a shallow part of Krtoli Bay where salt was once produced. Channels, shallow pools and banks covered in wetland vegetation now form a protected habitat. The area has been a special nature reserve since 2008 and has been on the Ramsar List of Wetlands of International Importance since 2013.

Solila's value for birds comes from its shallow feeding waters and its role as a resting place during migration. Autumn and spring migration, along with wintering birds, offer different opportunities for observation from a summer walk.

From the maintained path and observation tower, you can see the differences between the channels, open water and vegetated areas without entering the habitat. Within Tivat Bay, the reserve preserves a landscape quite different from urban marinas and the stone piers of coastal villages.

02

Bjelila, houses and boats along Tivat Bay

In Bjelila, stone houses, jetties and boats cluster along the Krtoli shore. The piers are part of the village: they stand in front of the houses and connect them to the sea.

Tivat's tourism organisation links the village's name to washing and bleaching laundry at the Frutak spring. Fresh water on this shore served household needs, while the jetties allowed boats to set out to sea.

From the waterfront, you can see the Island of Flowers, Sveti Marko and Gospa od Milosti. These islands lie in the inner part of Tivat Bay, so you can compare their position with the more open view later in the day on the other side of Luštica.

03

Rose and its former maritime services at the entrance to the bay

Rose is a port settlement at the north-western end of Luštica, opposite Herceg Novi. A row of stone houses follows the pier and the sheltered stretch of waterfront. The village stands at the entrance to the Bay of Kotor: from the port, the relationship between this headland, the opposite shore and the bay beyond is clear.

Rose once had a customs house, a harbour master's office and a quarantine service. These institutions handled arriving ships and controlled navigation before vessels continued into the bay.

The surviving houses are generally associated with the 17th and 18th centuries. Look along the row of waterfront houses, at the stonework around their openings and at the piers in front of them.

04

Žanjice, a pebble cove beyond the olive groves

Žanjice is a pebble cove on the Luštica side of the entrance to the Bay of Kotor, with olive groves behind it. The road descends through the interior of the peninsula, so after the drive through the villages you arrive on a shore facing the Adriatic. The beach and landing pier now serve swimmers and arriving boats, while the olive groves retain a trace of agricultural life in this part of Luštica.

The Church of Saint John, built in 1881, stands beside the shore. A view of it adds to the visit to the cove, but the plan does not promise that the church will be open.

Žanjice is also a departure point for boat excursions, including trips to the Blue Cave.

05

Mirište and Arza, a view of the fortified entrance to the bay

The islet of Mala Gospa lies off Mirište cove, with its Church of the Presentation and walls visible from the shore. Arza stands on the nearby headland. Together, they create a recognisable coastal view of an island shrine and the fortified approach to the bay.

Arza forms part of the Austrian defence system from the mid-19th century. Its role was connected to Mamula on the island and Oštro on the opposite side of the entrance to the Bay of Kotor. The arrangement of the forts shows how important this sea passage was to controlling the bay. The view from Mirište lets you see their position from land.

The cove has stone sections of waterfront, a small beach area and a restaurant above the water.

06

Luštica Bay and the coast's modern use

Luštica Bay is a modern settlement built around a marina on the peninsula's Adriatic coast. Marina Village brings together berths, a promenade, restaurants and rows of buildings above the waterfront. A walk here shows Luštica's present-day development after visits to its old fishing villages and ports.

Beside the marina, look at the arrangement of the berths and the breakwater protecting their entrance. This visit uses parking intended for day visitors, separate from reserved residents' spaces.

The buildings beside the marina follow the shoreline, with further rows rising behind them. Compared with Bjelila's jetties, the docking area here is laid out around berths and a promenade, with a breakwater facing the open sea.
